1. A hospital bed, comprising:
- a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section;
a platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section, wherein the rotating plate has a perimeter that is slidably supported by the platform tilting mechanism, and wherein the rotating plate has a vertically extending axis of rotation; and
a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform tilting mechanism to be able to lift and lower the rotating plate to respectively lift and lower the patient sleep surface support;
wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal bed orientation to a side egress orientation, and wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section, the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section, and the foot section resides below the seat section.

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section; and a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform tilting mechanism to be able to lift the patient sleep surface support; wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal bed orientation to a side egress orientation, and wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section and the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section, and wherein the platform tilting mechanism includes a tilt bar mount that resides on a flat upper surface of the rotating plate, the tilt bar mount having an upwardly extending triangular shape when viewed from the side with an upper peak portion of the triangular shape residing above the plate and being attached to a laterally extending main support rod, and wherein the laterally extending main support rod attaches to and resides directly under an underside of a seat section frame of the sleep surface support and directly above a portion of the rotating plate.

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section; and a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform tilting mechanism to be able to lift the patient sleep surface support, wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal bed orientation to a side egress orientation, and wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section and the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section, and wherein the rotating plate supports a tilt bar mount that resides directly above the rotating plate, wherein the tilt bar mount is attached to a laterally extending main support bar that resides directly above the rotating plate and is attached to a seat section frame, and wherein the lifting mechanism resides under the tilt bar mount and beneath the rotating plate and is configured to lift the back, seat and foot sections concurrently.

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section; a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform tilting mechanism to be able to lift the patient sleep surface support; wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal bed orientation to a side egress orientation, and wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section and the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section; and wherein the rotating plate supports a tilt bar mount that resides directly above the plate and is attached to a single laterally extending main support rod that resides above the plate, wherein the main support rod is attached to an underside of a seat section frame directly above a portion of the plate, and wherein the laterally extending main support rod is rotatably attached to the tilt bar mount and is configured to cooperate with the lifting mechanism and the platform titling mechanism to be able to concurrently lift the back, seat and foot sections of the bed. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12)

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section; a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform tilting mechanism to be able to lift the patient sleep surface support; wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal bed orientation to a side egress orientation, and wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section and the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section; and a pair of side rails attached to opposing sides of the foot section, wherein the side rails are configured to reside above and one along each long side of the patient sleep surface when the bed is in the longitudinal orientation, wherein the side rails translate with the foot section of the patient sleep surface and tilt to reside upwardly in the side chair and side egress stand positions with an upper portion of the side rails residing above the foot section and with a lower portion of the side rails residing below the upper portion of the side rails facing a floor. - View Dependent Claims (14)

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a four way equal platform tilting mechanism attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the four way equal platform tilting mechanism comprising a rotating plate having a perimeter that is slidably supported by the four way equal platform; and a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the four way equal platform tilting mechanism to be able to concurrently lift the back, seat, and foot sections of the patient sleep surface support; wherein the rotating plate is circular and resides under the seat section and supports a single laterally extending main support bar that resides a distance above the rotating plate, the main support bar being attached to an underside of the seat section primary, and wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal normal orientation to a side egress orientation, whereby the lifting mechanism and the four way equal platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position where the seat section is tilted down so that the second end portion resides below the first end portion and the back and foot sections are substantially upright.

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a four way equal platform tilting mechanism comprising a platform holding a rotating plate, the rotating plate residing under the seat section and holding an upwardly extending tilt mount that holds a single laterally extending main support bar that resides over the plate and is attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section; and a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform of the four way equal platform tilting mechanism, aligned with the rotating plate, to be able to concurrently lift the back, seat and foot sections of the patient sleep surface support; wherein the rotating plate is configured to rotate the patient sleep surface support from a longitudinal normal orientation to a side egress orientation, whereby the lifting mechanism and the four way equal platform tilting mechanism cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position where the seat section is tilted down so that the second end portion resides below the first end portion and the back and foot sections are substantially upright. - View Dependent Claims (17)

18. A hospital chair bed, comprising:

a patient sleep surface support having back, seat and foot sections, wherein the seat section comprises first and second opposing longitudinally spaced apart end portions, the first end portion residing proximate the back section and the second end portion residing proximate the foot section; a platform attached to an underside of the patient sleep surface support proximate the seat section, the platform comprising a rotating plate that resides below the seat section, wherein the rotating plate has a circular shape with a perimeter that is slidably supported by the platform, and wherein the rotating plate has a vertically extending axis of rotation that allows for the patient sleep surface to be able to rotate 90 degrees to either a right hand or left hand side of a longitudinal hospital bed orientation to provide for right and left side egress orientations; a lock configured to releasably engage the rotating plate to lock the patient sleep surface support in a right or left side egress orientation; and a lifting mechanism attached to and residing under the platform to be able to lift and lower the platform with the rotating plate to respectively lift and lower the patient sleep surface support; wherein the lifting mechanism and the platform with the rotating plate cooperate to move the patient sleep surface support to a side standing egress position with the seat section tilted down so that the second end portion of the seat section resides below the first end portion of the seat section, the back section extends substantially upward above the seat section, and the foot section resides below the seat section. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20)
