Abstract

The present invention relates generally to fluid control valves and, more particularly, to a mixing valve for use within a faucet.

Claims

1. A valve assembly for controlling water flow in a faucet, the valve assembly including:

a hot water inlet;

a cold water inlet spaced from the hot water inlet;

an outlet spaced from the hot water inlet and the cold water inlet;

a valve mechanism configured to selectively control flow of the water from the hot water inlet and the cold water inlet to the outlet;

a stem assembly including a ball supported for pivoting movement about a first axis and a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, a knuckle extending downwardly from the ball and operably coupled to the valve mechanism, a stem supported within the ball, the stem being substantially L-shaped and including an upwardly extending leg and a laterally extending leg, the laterally extending leg extending substantially parallel to the first axis;

an upper housing including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly; and

a coupling member including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly and an opening receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly, the coupling member configured to couple to the upper housing such that the ball of the stem assembly is secured intermediate the arcuate surfaces of the upper housing and the coupling member.

2. The valve assembly of claim 1, wherein the coupling member includes a plurality of tabs extending toward the upper housing, the tabs positioned adjacent to the extensions of the ball and defining a continuous glide surface along a range of motion of the ball.

3. The valve assembly of claim 1, wherein the ball is formed of a thermoplastic material extending over the intersection of the upwardly extending leg and the laterally extending leg of the stem.

4. The valve assembly of claim 3, wherein the thermoplastic extends over the end of the laterally extending leg of the stem.

5. The valve assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve mechanism includes:

a lower disc including a first port in fluid communication with the hot water inlet, a second port in fluid communication with the cold water inlet, and a third port in fluid communication with the outlet;

an upper disc including upper and lower surfaces, the lower surface positioned in engagement with the lower disc, the upper surface including a recess to receive the knuckle of the stem assembly, the upper disc supported for translational movement relative to the lower disc in a first direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the first axis to control flow rate of water delivered to the outlet, and the upper disc supported for translational movement relative to the lower disc in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the second axis to control the temperature of water delivered to the outlet.

6. The valve assembly of claim 5, further comprising a carrier positioned intermediate the coupling member and the upper disc, the carrier including an interior wall received within the recess of the upper disc and receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly.

The valve assembly of claim 5, wherein the lower surface of the upper disc includes an inner channel edge and an outer channel edge defining a closed peripheral channel for selective communication with the first, second, and third ports, the closed peripheral channel extending around a center portion of the lower surface and configured to mix hot water from the first port and cold water from the second port before reaching the third port, the center portion of the lower surface configured to selectively seal the first port and the second port from the third port.

The valve assembly of claim 7, wherein translational movement of the upper disc in the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the water flow rate through the third port, translational movement of the upper disc in the second direction perpendicular to the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the proportion of water flow through the first and second ports, and translational movement in the first direction from the third port toward the first and second ports moves the center portion to close the first and second ports.

9. The valve assembly of claim 1, further comprising a temperature limiting member including an adjustable engagement surface configured to set a hot water limit for limiting movement of the stem assembly and the flow of hot water through the third port.

The valve assembly of claim 9, wherein the temperature limiting member includes a wall having a downwardly facing inclined surface defining the adjustable engagement surface configured to selectively engage a lateral extension of the stem assembly to limit pivoting movement of the ball about the second axis.

11. A valve assembly for controlling water flow in a faucet, the valve assembly including:

a hot water inlet;

a cold water inlet spaced from the hot water inlet;

an outlet spaced from the hot water inlet and the cold water inlet;

a stem assembly including a ball supported for pivoting movement about a first axis and a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, a lateral extension extending parallel to the first axis, a knuckle extending downwardly from the ball, and a stem supported by the ball, the stem including an upwardly extending leg;

a first sealing member including a first port in fluid communication with the hot water inlet, a second port in fluid communication with the cold water inlet, and a third port in fluid communication with the outlet;

a second sealing member including upper and lower surfaces, the lower surface positioned in engagement with the first sealing member, the upper surface including a recess to receive the knuckle of the stem assembly, the second sealing member supported for translational movement relative to the first sealing member in a first direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the first axis to control flow rate of water delivered to the outlet, and the second sealing member supported for translational movement relative to the first sealing member in a second direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the second axis to control the temperature of water delivered to the outlet; and

a temperature limiting member configured to set a hot water limit for limiting movement of the stem assembly and the flow of hot water through the third port, the temperature limiting member including a wall having a downwardly facing inclined surface configured to selectively engage the lateral extension of the stem assembly to limit pivoting movement of the ball about the second axis, the inclined surface being supported for movement relative to the lateral extension to adjust the hot water limit.

12. The valve assembly of claim 11, further comprising:

an upper housing including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly; and

a coupling member including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly and an opening receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly, the coupling member configured to couple to the upper housing such that the ball of the stem assembly is secured intermediate the arcuate surfaces of the upper housing and the coupling member.

13. The valve assembly of claim 11, wherein the stem is substantially L-shaped and includes a laterally extending leg extending substantially perpendicular to the upwardly extending leg.

14. The valve assembly of claim 13, wherein the ball is formed of a thermoplastic material extending over the intersection of the upwardly extending leg and the laterally extending leg of the stem.

15. The valve assembly of claim 14, wherein the thermoplastic extends over the end of the laterally extending leg of the stem.

16. The valve assembly of claim 11, further comprising a carrier positioned intermediate the coupling member and the second sealing member, the carrier including an interior wall received within the recess of the second sealing member and receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly.

The valve assembly of claim 11, wherein the lower surface of the second sealing member includes an inner channel edge and an outer channel edge defining a closed peripheral channel for selective communication with the first, second, and third ports, the closed peripheral channel extending around a center portion of the lower surface and configured to mix hot water from the first port and cold water from the second port before reaching the third port, the center portion of the lower surface configured to selectively seal the first port and the second port from the third port.

The valve assembly of claim 17, wherein translational movement of the second sealing member in the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the water flow rate through the third port, translational movement of the second sealing member in the second direction perpendicular to the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the proportion of water flow through the first and second ports, and translational movement in the first direction from the third port toward the first and second ports moves the center portion to close the first and second ports.

19. The valve assembly of claim 11, wherein the wall of the temperature limiting member is rotatable about a vertical axis for repositioning the inclined surface relative to the lateral extension.

20. The valve assembly of claim 19, further comprising:

a flexible arm extending downwardly from the wall of the temperature limiting member; and

a glide surface, the flexible arm configured to slide along the glide surface as the wall of the temperature limiting member is rotated about the vertical axis.

21. A valve assembly for controlling water flow in a faucet, the valve assembly including:

a hot water inlet;

a cold water inlet spaced from the hot water inlet;

an outlet spaced from the hot water inlet and the cold water inlet;

a stem assembly including a ball supported for pivoting movement about a first axis and a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, a lateral extension extending parallel to the first axis, a knuckle extending downwardly from the ball, and a stem extending upwardly from the ball;

a first sealing member formed of a ceramic material and including a first port in fluid communication with the hot water inlet, a second port in fluid communication with the cold water inlet, and a third port in fluid communication with the outlet;

a second sealing member formed of a ceramic material and including upper and lower surfaces, the lower surface positioned in engagement with the first sealing member, the upper surface including a recess to receive the knuckle of the stem assembly, the second sealing member supported for translational movement relative to the first sealing member in a first direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the first axis to control flow rate of water delivered to the outlet, and the second sealing member supported for translational movement relative to the first sealing member in a second direction in response to pivoting movement of the ball of the stem assembly about the second axis to control the temperature of water delivered to the outlet;

a carrier positioned intermediate the coupling member and the second sealing member, the carrier including an interior wall received within the recess of the second sealing member and receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly; and

an adjustable temperature limiting member configured to cooperate with the lateral extension of the stem assembly to limit pivoting movement of the ball about the second axis.

22. The valve assembly of claim 21, wherein the interior wall of the carrier includes a flat and conforms to the recess of the second sealing member.

23. The valve assembly of claim 21, further comprising:

an upper housing including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly; and

a coupling member including an arcuate surface cooperating with the ball of the stem assembly and an opening receiving the knuckle of the stem assembly, the coupling member configured to couple to the upper housing such that the ball of the stem assembly is secured intermediate the arcuate surfaces of the upper housing and the coupling member.

24. The valve assembly of claim 21, wherein the stem is substantially L-shaped and includes an upwardly extending leg and a laterally extending leg, the laterally extending leg being coaxial with the lateral extension.

25. The valve assembly of claim 24, wherein the ball is formed of a thermoplastic material extending over the intersection of the upwardly extending leg and the laterally extending leg of the stem.

26. The valve assembly of claim 25, wherein the thermoplastic extends over the end of the laterally extending leg of the stem.

27. The valve assembly of claim 21, wherein the lower surface of the second sealing member includes an inner channel edge and an outer channel edge defining a closed peripheral channel for selective communication with the first, second, and third ports, the closed peripheral channel extending around a center portion of the lower surface and configured to mix hot water from the first port and cold water from the second port before reaching the third port, the center portion of the lower surface configured to selectively seal the first port and the second port from the third port.

28. The valve assembly of claim 27, wherein translational movement of the second sealing member in the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the water flow rate through the third port, translational movement of the second sealing member in the second direction perpendicular to the first direction moves the inner channel edge to change the proportion of water flow through the first and second ports, and translational movement in the first direction from the third port toward the first and second ports moves the center portion to close the first and second ports.
