1. A method for preserving data on a hard disk drive, said method comprising:

  • storing a copy of previously stored data read from at least one sector of a hard disk in a non-volatile memory location of said hard disk drive, wherein said non-volatile memory location of said hard disk drive is separate from said hard disk;

    receiving a modified copy of data;

    storing said modified copy of data at said at least one sector of said hard disk thereby overwriting said previously stored data; and

    marking said copy of said previously stored data in said non-volatile memory location as invalid after verify that said modified copy of data has been successfully written to said at least one sector.
