Abstract

An apparatus for interfering with locomotion of a target by conducting a current through a load that includes an ionizable path. The apparatus includes, according to various aspects of the present invention, an energy source, an ionization detector, a charge detector, a controller, and a pulse generator. The controller determines, in response to the detector and by trial and error, a respective quantity of energy for each pulse of a plurality of pulses to be generated. For each pulse of the plurality, the pulse generator receives the respective quantity of energy from the energy source, provides in response to the quantity of energy a respective voltage to ionize the ionization path, and provides the current through the load. The charge detector detects a charge provided through the load. The processor sets the voltage for charging for a next pulse in response to the charge detected by the charge detector.

Claims

1. A method performed by an apparatus, the apparatus for interfering with voluntary locomotion by a target by conducting a current through the target, the method comprising:

monitoring the current delivered through the target, the current delivered in accordance with a goal, wherein the current causes pain or skeletal muscle contractions that interfere with voluntary locomotion by the target; and

adjusting the goal in response to a result of monitoring.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein monitoring comprises detecting whether ionization occurred and detecting a charge of the current.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising recording indicia of a charge of the current in association with a time of day and a date.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising recording indicia of energy stored in association with a time of day and a date.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising recording indicia of energy released in association with a time of day and a date.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein monitoring comprises integrating the current over a period to detect whether ionization occurred and to detect a charge of the current.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

adjusting is performed in accordance with at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

adjusting comprises adjusting;

a stored energy for ionization in accordance with an ionization goal; and

a stored energy for delivery of the current in accordance with a stimulus goal.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

adjusting comprises adjusting;

a released energy for ionization in accordance with an ionization goal; and

a released energy for delivery of the current in accordance with a stimulus goal.

10. The method of claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein adjusting further comprises increasing at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

11. The method of claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein adjusting further comprises decreasing at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

12. The method of claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal comprises indicia of a quantity of pulses for storing the respective energy.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

adjusting comprises;

charging a first capacitance in accordance with the ionization goal; and

charging a second capacitance in accordance with the stimulus goal.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

adjusting comprises diminishing delivery of the current in accordance with at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the result comprises indicia of a quantity of charge delivered by the current.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the current comprises a series of pulses; and

adjusting comprises adjusting the goal for a next pulse of the series.

17. An apparatus for interfering with voluntary locomotion of a target by conducting a current through the target, the apparatus comprising:

a current delivery circuit that delivers the current in accordance with a goal for causing pain or skeletal muscle contractions that interfere with voluntary locomotion by the target;

a detector that detects the current delivered through the target to provide a result; and

a processor that adjusts the goal in response to the result.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the detector detects whether ionization occurred and detects a charge of the current.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the detector integrates the current over a period to detect at least one of whether ionization occurred and a charge of the current.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the current delivery circuit comprises a capacitance having a voltage; and

the detector detects a change of the voltage to detect at least one of whether ionization occurred and a charge of the current.

21. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

the processor adjusts the current in accordance with the goal.

22. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

the processor stores energy for ionization in accordance with the ionization goal and stores energy for delivery of the current in accordance with the stimulus goal.

23. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal; and

the processor releases energy in accordance with at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, 22, or 23 wherein the processor increases at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, 22, or 23 wherein the processor decreases at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal.

26. The apparatus of claim 21, 22, or 23 wherein at least one of the ionization goal and the stimulus goal comprises indicia of a quantity of pulses for storing the respective energy.

27. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the goal comprises at least one of an ionization goal and a stimulus goal;

the currently delivery circuit comprises a first capacitance and a second capacitance; and

to deliver the current in accordance with the goal, the processor directs charging of the first capacitance in accordance with the ionization goal and directs charging of the second capacitance in accordance with the stimulus goal.

28. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein to deliver the current in accordance with the goal, the processor diminishes delivery of the current in accordance the goal.

29. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein:

the current comprises a series of pulses; and

the processor adjusts the goal for a next pulse in the series.

30. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the result comprises indicia of a quantity of charge delivered by the current.

31. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the result comprises indicia of whether ionization occurred.

32. An electronic control device comprising:

an energy delivery circuit that attempts delivery, in accordance with a goal, of an energy for ionization and that after ionization delivers a current for interfering with control by a human or animal target of skeletal muscles of the target;

an ionization detector that detects whether ionization occurred; and

a processor that responsive to the ionization detector adjusts the goal to conserve energy expended for ionization.

33. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the goal comprises a value representing a quantity of stored energy.

34. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the goal comprises a value representing a quantity of capacitance for storing energy.

35. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the goal comprises a value representing a voltage corresponding to stored energy.

36. The electronic control device of claim 32 further comprising an energy storage circuit that stores, in accordance with the goal, the energy for ionization.

37. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the energy delivery circuit converts the energy for ionization in accordance with the goal.

38. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein:

the goal comprises a configuration setting for an energy storage circuit that stores, in accordance with the goal, the energy for ionization; and

the processor reconfigures the energy storage circuit in accordance with the configuration setting.

39. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the goal comprises a current value of the goal and a plurality of historical values of the goal, each historical value used in a prior attempted delivery.

40. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein:

attempted delivery of the energy for ionization comprises discharging a capacitance having a voltage across the capacitance; and

detecting whether ionization occurred comprises detecting that the voltage has changed.

41. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein detecting whether ionization occurred comprises detecting delivery of the current.

42. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein:

the current comprises a plurality of pulses; and

delivering the current comprises delivering each pulse after a respective ionization.

43. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the processor adjusts the goal in response to detecting that ionization did not occur.

44. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the processor adjusts the goal in response to detecting that ionization did occur.

45. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the processor adjusts the goal to accomplish a linear change in a value of the goal.

46. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein:

adjusting comprises changing a value of the goal in accordance with an adjustment amount; and

adjusting further comprises changing the adjustment amount.

47. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein:

the goal comprises a current value of the goal and a plurality of historical values of the goal, each historical value used in a prior attempted delivery;

adjusting the goal comprises changing the current value of the goal in accordance with an adjustment amount; and

adjusting the goal further comprises changing the adjustment amount in accordance with an historical value of the plurality of historical values.

48. The electronic control device of claim 47 wherein changing the current value of the goal and changing the adjustment amount conform to binary searching.

49. The electronic control device of claim 32 wherein the energy delivery circuit stops delivery of the energy for the particular ionization after the ionization has occurred and before a total energy is expended that was available for delivery for the particular ionization.
