Abstract

The invention relates to novel intraocular lenses. The lenses are capable of post-operative adjustment of their optical properties, including conversion from single focal lenses to multifocal lenses.

Claims

1. A multifocal lens comprising:

a first portion of the lens that has a first focal length that provides distance vision; and

a second portion of the lens that includes a material that is optically reactive to an external stimulus and has a focal length that is adjusted to a second focal length by application of the stimulus and provides near vision; and

wherein the second portion has a substantially circular shape and is centered along a patient'"'"'s visual axis located at a center of the lens, and the first portion has a substantially annulus shape and is located around the second portion.

2. A lens comprising:

a first portion of the lens that has a first focal length that provides distance vision; and

a second portion of the lens that includes a material that is optically reactive to an external stimulus and has a focal length that is adjusted to a second focal length by application of the stimulus and provides near vision; and

wherein the first portion has a substantially circular shape and is centered along a patient'"'"'s visual axis, and the second portion has a substantially annulus shape and is located around the first portion.

3. A method for using a lens, implanted in an animal, the lens having a modifying composition (MC) dispersed therein, the modifying composition being capable of stimulus-induced polymerization, the method comprising:

exposing a first portion of the lens to an external stimulus that causes changes in at least one optical property that changes a focal length of the first portion of the lens to a first focal length to reduce an error caused by a healing response of the animal; and

exposing a second portion of the lens to an external stimulus that causes changes in said at least one optical property that change a focal length of the second portion of the lens to a second focal length that is different from the first focal length.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

selecting at least one of the first focal length and the second focal length based on a habit of the animal.

5. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

selecting a size of at least one of the first portion and the second portion based on a habit of the animal.

6. The method of claim 5 in which the habit of the animal includes at least one of reading books, reading a computer screen, and holding reading material at a given distance from the animal'"'"'s eyes.

7. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

selecting a size of at least one of the first portion and the second portion based on a pupil dilation response of the animal.

8. The method of claim 7 in which selecting the size includes allowing for at least one of near and distance vision at a given pupil dilation.

9. The method of claim 3 further comprising:

exposing at least one additional portion of the lens changing a focal length of the additional portion of the lens to a third focal length that is different from the first focal length.

10. The method of claim 3 in which the first focal length corresponds to distance vision of the animal, and in which the second focal length corresponds to near vision of the animal.

11. The method of claim 3 in which exposing the first portion of the lens is performed before exposing the second portion of the lens.

12. The method of claim 3 in which the error caused by the healing process includes at least one of an aspherical nature of the lens, an astigmatic error, and a higher order aberration.

13. The method of claim 3 in which exposing the first portion of the lens corrects at least one of an aspherical nature of the lens, an astigmatic error, and a higher order aberration, and in which exposing the second portion of the lens affects a near vision of the animal.

14. The method of claim 13 in which exposing the first portion of the lens is performed before exposing the second portion of the lens.

15. The method of claim 3 in which the second portion of the lens is centered along the animal'"'"'s visual axis and provides near vision.

16. The method of claim 3 in which the first portion of the lens is centered along the animal'"'"'s visual axis, and the second portion of the lens is annular and surrounds the first portion of the lens, the second portion of the lens providing near vision.
