1. A system for communicating high definition video, comprising:
- a transmitter, including;
a video receiver to receive original video from a video source and to output information identifying the original video in a predetermined video format;
a transmitter-side bus;
a transmitter-side channel communicating with the transmitter-side bus;
a video encoder receiving the information identifying the original video in the predetermined video format from the video receiver and outputting new information identifying the original video in a compressed format;
a transmitter-side programmed logic device receiving the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format, time-stamping the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format by placing a time-stamp in an associated packet header, and placing the time-stamped new information identifying the original video in the compressed format onto the transmitter-side bus and to the transmitter-side channel; and
a transmitter-side clock producing clock information communicated to the transmitter-side bus, the clock information being periodically packeted as control information and provided to the transmitter-side channel;
multiple receivers to simultaneously communicate with the transmitter, each including;
a receiver-side bus;
a receiver-side channel communicating with the receiver-side bus and with the transmitter-side channel asynchronously as to the others of the multiple receivers, the receiver-side channel to receive the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format from the transmitter-side channel and to place the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format onto the receiver-side bus;
a receiver-side clock periodically calibrated to the transmitter-side clock using the clock information packeted as control information and provided to the receiver-side channel via the transmitter-side channel;
a receiver-side programmed logic device to read the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format from the receiver-side bus, reading the time-stamping of the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format, and (1) if the time-stamping information of the new information is larger than the receiver-side clock, buffering the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format and (2) if the time-stamping information of the new information is smaller than the receiver-side clock, discarding the new information identifying the original video in the compressed format;
a video decoder receiving the buffered new information identifying the original video in the compressed format from the receiver-side programmed logic device and decompressing the new information into a decoded format of information identifying the original video;
a high definition display port for communication with a high definition display; and
a video transmitter to receive the decoded format of information identifying the original video, to convert the decoded format of information identifying the original video to a high definition format of information identifying the original video, and outputting the high definition format of information identifying the original video to the high definition display port.
