Abstract

A computerized system for displaying, geolocating, and taking measurements from captured oblique images includes a data file accessible by the computer system. The data file includes a plurality of image files corresponding to a plurality of captured oblique images, and positional data corresponding to the images. Image display and analysis software is executed by the system for reading the data file and displaying at least a portion of the captured oblique images. The software retrieves the positional data for one or more user-selected points on the displayed image, and calculates a separation distance between any two or more selected points. The separation distance calculation is user-selectable to determine various parameters including linear distance between, area encompassed within, relative elevation of, and height difference between selected points.

Claims

1. A computerized system for displaying and making measurements based upon captured oblique images, comprising:

a computer system executing image display and analysis software reading;

a plurality of captured oblique images having corresponding geo-location data; and

a data table storing ground plane data that closely approximates at least a portion of terrain depicted within said captured oblique images;

at least one display device adapted to display one or more of the plurality of captured oblique images; and

at least one input device adapted to permit selection of one or more points within the plurality of captured oblique images,

wherein the image display and analysis software when executed by the computer system causes the computer system to display at least one of the captured and geo-located oblique images;

wherein the image display and analysis software is adapted to, in response to selection of two or more points via the input device, select one or more intermediate points positioned between the two or more selected points to thereby form a plurality of line segments connecting the two or more selected points, each line segment, using the ground plane data, following the terrain depicted within the portion of the captured oblique image corresponding to that line segment, and

wherein the image display and analysis software is adapted to calculate a distance along said line segments between the two or more selected points.

The computerized system of claim 1, wherein the ground plane data includes a tessellated ground plane data, said ground plane data representing a tessellated ground plane that closely approximates at least a portion of the terrain depicted within the displayed oblique image, the tessellated ground plane comprising a plurality of interconnected facets, each facet having a respective pitch and slope.

3. The computerized system of claim 2, wherein each intermediate point corresponds at least one of the plurality of interconnected facets of the tessellated ground plane.

The computerized system of claim 2, wherein the image display and analysis software identifies which of the facets corresponds to the two or more selected points and the one or more intermediate points and calculates an elevation of each point, the image display and analysis software using the calculated elevation to calculate the distance along said line segments between the two or more selected points.

5. The computerized system of claim 2, wherein the tessellated ground plane is one of superimposed upon and fit to said displayed image.

6. The computerized system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of facets each correspond to equal areas of the displayed oblique image.

7. The computerized system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of facets each includes an equal number of pixels of the displayed oblique image.

8. The computerized system of claim 1, wherein the image display and analysis software includes user-selectable measuring modes accessible through at least one of pull-down menus, toolbars, and keyboard commands.

9. The computerized system of claim 1, wherein each of the oblique images were captured by an image-capturing device, the geo-location data further comprising at least one of:

time data representing the time when an oblique image is captured;

location data representing the location of the image-capturing device when an oblique image is captured;

orientation data representing the orientation of the image-capturing device when an oblique image is captured;

correction data representing correction factors for the image-capturing device when the oblique image is captured; and

elevation data representing an average elevation of a surface captured by the image-capturing device.

10. The computerized system of claim 9, wherein the location data includes latitude, longitude, and altitude of the image-capturing device when an oblique image is captured.

11. The computerized system of claim 9, wherein the orientation data includes roll, pitch, yaw, and heading of the image-capturing device when an oblique image is captured.

12. The computerized system of claim 9 wherein the image-capturing device is a camera and said correction data includes at least one of a focal length, sensor size, aspect ratio, principle point offset, distortion, and pixel pitch.

13. The computerized system of claim 1, further comprising:

an image-capturing device, the device capturing oblique images and issuing image-data signals corresponding to the captured images; and

at least one geo-locating device, each geo-locating device issuing a corresponding at least one geo-locating signal indicative at least in part of a geo-location of the image-capturing device;

wherein the computerized system receives and stored the image-data signals and the at least one geo-locating signal; and

wherein the image display and analysis software reads the image-data signals and the at least one geo-locating signal, the software associating each image-data signal with a corresponding at least one geo-locating signal.

14. A computerized method for taking measurements within a displayed oblique image, comprising:

receiving, from an input device, a selection of a starting point and an end point on the displayed image;

retrieving from a data file positional data corresponding to the starting and end points;

referencing a ground plane data file storing ground plane data that closely approximates at least of portion of terrain depicted within said displayed image;

connecting the starting point and the end point with a plurality of line segments, the line segments conforming to the ground plane data to thereby follow the terrain; and

calculating the distance along the line segments between the starting point and the end point thereby taking into account said ground plane data of said line segments.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said ground plane data is superimposed upon said displayed oblique image.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising the steps of:

receiving, from the input device, a selection of one or more intermediate points on the displayed image;

retrieving from the data file positional data corresponding to the one or more intermediate points;

connecting adjacent intermediate points to each other, and connecting the starting point and the end point to adjacent intermediate points, with line segments, the line segments conforming to the ground plane data to thereby follow the terrain; and

calculating the distance along the line segments between the starting point and the end point.
