Abstract

The present invention is directed to a power control wiring device that includes an electronic switch circuit that energizes the electrical load in accordance with a timing regulation signal. A timing regulation circuit includes a primary timing regulation circuit and an auxiliary timing regulation circuit. The circuit is adjustable between a minimum power setting and a maximum power setting to thereby generate an adjustable primary timing regulation signal. The timing regulation circuit also generates an auxiliary timing regulation signal to thereby reduce power consumption. A primary manual power control mechanism is configured to adjust the primary timing regulation circuit between the minimum power setting and the maximum power setting. An auxiliary manual power control mechanism is configured to trim the maximum power setting in accordance with the selectable trim adjustment, the at least one auxiliary manual power control mechanism being user accessible.

Claims

1. A power control wiring device comprising:

at least one terminal configured to be connected to a source of AC power;

an electronic switch circuit coupled to at least one electrical load, the electronic switch circuit providing a switch actuation signal selectively energizing the electrical load during a portion of an AC cycle in accordance with a timing regulation signal;

a timing regulation circuit coupled to the at least one terminal and the electronic switch circuit, the timing regulation circuit being configured to generate the timing regulation signal, the timing regulation circuit including a primary timing regulation circuit adjustable between a minimum power setting and a maximum power setting to thereby generate an adjustable primary timing regulation signal, the timing regulation circuit including an auxiliary timing regulation circuit configured to generate an auxiliary timing regulation signal that trims the maximum power setting in accordance with a selectable trim adjustment to thereby reduce power consumption relative to the maximum power setting, the timing regulation signal being a combination of the primary timing regulation signal and the auxiliary timing regulation signal;

a primary manual power control mechanism configured to adjust the primary timing regulation circuit between the minimum power setting and the maximum power setting; and

at least one auxiliary manual power control mechanism configured to trim the maximum power setting in accordance with the selectable trim adjustment, the at least one auxiliary manual power control mechanism being user accessible.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the electrical load includes at least one light emitting device.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one light emitting device includes a lighting emitting device disposed within a device body portion of the device or a light emitting device disposed external to the device body portion of the device.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the electrical load includes an electrical motor.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic switch circuit further comprises:

an enabling circuit coupled to the timing regulation circuit, the enabling circuit being configured to emit an enabling signal during a selected portion of the AC cycle in response to the timing regulation signal; and

an electronic switch device coupled to the enabling circuit, the electronic switch device being configured to energize the electrical load in response to the enabling signal.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the enabling circuit includes a zener diode.

The device of claim 6, wherein the timing regulation circuit includes a voltage divider circuit configured to output the timing regulation signal, the timing regulation signal being an instantaneous voltage signal that is configured to exceed the zener breakover voltage during a selected portion of the AC cycle such that the zener diode conducts and emits the enabling signal.

8. The device of claim 6, wherein the electronic switch device includes a bipolar junction transistor having a gate coupled to the zener diode, the bipolar junction transistor being configured to conduct in response to the enabling signal being directed to the gate.

9. The device of claim 5 wherein the electronic switch device includes a switchable semiconductor device.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the primary manual power control mechanism includes a slide lever or a rotatable dial.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one auxiliary manual power control mechanism includes a slide lever or a rotatable dial.

12. The device of claim 1, further comprising an auxiliary amplitude control circuit configured to selectively adjust the amplitude of the switch actuation signal.

The device of claim 12, wherein the at least one auxiliary manual power control mechanism includes a first control mechanism coupled to the auxiliary timing regulation circuit and a second control mechanism coupled to the auxiliary amplitude control circuit, the second control mechanism being configured to manually adjust the amplitude of the switch actuation signal.

14. The device of claim 12, wherein the electrical load includes at least one light emitting element and the auxiliary amplitude control circuit is configured to selectively adjust a luminosity of the at least one light emitting element.

15. The device of claim 1, wherein the switch actuation signal selectively energizes the electrical load during a portion of an AC half-cycle.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the AC half-cycle is a positive half-cycle.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the timing regulation circuit includes an ambient light sensor, the timing regulation circuit being configured to adjust the timing regulation signal in accordance with ambient light levels.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein the auxiliary timing regulation circuit includes an ambient light sensor configured to adjust the auxiliary timing regulation signal in accordance with ambient light levels.

The device of claim 18, further comprising a proximity detector circuit coupled to the electronic switch circuit and the ambient light sensor, the proximity detector circuit being configured to override the ambient light sensor such that the electronic switch element provides the switch actuation signal energizing the electrical load when an object is detected in a location proximal to the device irregardless of ambient light levels.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the power control wiring device is disposed in a device assembly product including a secondary device selected from a group of devices including an outlet receptacle, a switch device, a TVSS, an SPD, a GFCI, an AFCI, or a proximity sensor.

21. The device of claim 1, further comprising an energy storage device configured to provide power to the device in the event that the source of AC power is disabled.

The device of claim 1, further comprising a proximity detector circuit coupled to the electronic switch circuit and the timing regulation circuit, the proximity detector circuit being configured to override the timing regulation signal such that the electronic switch element provides the switch actuation signal energizing the electrical load when an object is detected in a location proximal to the device.
