Abstract

A light energy delivery head is provided which, in one aspect, mounts laser diode bars or other light energy emitters in a heat sink block which is adapted to cool both the emitters and a surface of a medium with which the head is in contact and to which it is applying light energy. In another aspect, various retroreflection configurations are provided which optimize retroreflection of back-scattered light energy from the medium. The size of the aperture through which light energy is applied to the medium is also controlled so as to provide a desired amplification coefficient as a result of retroreflection.

Claims

1. A light energy treatment head comprising:

at least one optical energy emitting element mounted within the head and oriented to direct optical energy to a target region of skin;

a thermally conductive transparent element disposed between the energy emitter and the target region of skin during use; and

at least one cooling mechanism for extracting heat from both the emitter and the transparent element,

wherein the at least one cooling mechanism comprises at least one coolant flow channel.

2. The light energy treatment head of claim 1, wherein said thermally conductive transparent element is a waveguide.

3. The light energy treatment head of claim 2, wherein said waveguide further comprises an angle dependent reflecting layer on at least one wall of said waveguide capable of attenuating angled optical energy entering said waveguide.

9. The light energy treatment head of claim 1, wherein the at least one coolant flow channel is adapted for flow of a fluid therethrough.

10. The light energy treatment head of claim 9, wherein the fluid comprises a gas.

11. The light energy treatment head of claim 9, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.

12. The light energy treatment head of claim 1, wherein said energy emitting element is a laser.

13. The light energy treatment head of claim 1, wherein said energy emitting element is a lamp.

4. A method for applying optical energy to skin, comprising:

providing a thermally conductive mount,

mounting at least one optical energy emitting element to said mount such that said emitting element is in thermal contact with said mount and is oriented to direct optical energy to a target region of skin,

coupling a thermally conductive element to said mount such that said thermally conductive element is in thermal contact with the mount and is adapted for contact with a surface portion of the skin, and

activating the energy emitting element so as to apply energy to the target region of skin while cooling the mount to remove heat from both the energy emitting element and the thermally conductive element.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising selecting said energy emitting element from the group consisting of a laser and a lamp.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising forming at least one channel in said mount, said channel being adapted for flow of a fluid therethrough so as to remove heat from the mount.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising selecting said fluid to be a gas.

8. The method of claim 6, further comprising selecting said fluid to be a liquid.

14. A light energy treatment head comprising:

at least one optical energy emitting element mounted within the head and oriented to direct optical energy to a target region of skin;

a thermally conductive element adapted for contact with a skin surface;

at least one cooling mechanism for extracting heat from both the emitter and the thermally conductive element,

wherein the at least one cooling mechanism comprises at least one coolant flow channel.

15. The light energy treatment head of claim 14, wherein said thermally conductive element is a waveguide.

16. The light energy treatment head of claim 15, wherein said waveguide further comprises an angle dependent reflecting layer on at least one wall of said waveguide capable of attenuating angled optical energy entering said waveguide.

17. The light energy treatment head of claim 14, wherein the at least one coolant flow channel is adapted for flow of a fluid therethrough.

18. The light energy treatment head of claim 17, wherein the fluid comprises a gas.

19. The light energy treatment head of claim 17, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.

20. The light energy treatment head of claim 14, wherein said energy emitting element is a laser.

21. The light energy treatment head of claim 14, wherein said energy emitting element is a lamp.
