Abstract

Peripherals and data processing systems are disclosed which can be configured to interact based upon sensor data. In one embodiment, a peripheral, which is configured to be used with a data processing system, includes an interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system, and at least one sensor, such as a proximity sensor, to sense a user of the peripheral, and a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor, wherein the processor configures the peripheral in response to data from the at least one sensor. The peripheral may communicate sensor data from its sensors to the data processing system, which may be a wireless PDA, and the data processing system analyzes the sensor data from its sensors and from the peripheral'"'"'s sensors to decide how to configure the peripheral and/or the data processing system based on the sensor.

Claims

1. A peripheral configured to be used with a data processing system, the peripheral comprising:

an interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system with the peripheral being external and separate from the data processing system;

at least one sensor to sense a user of the peripheral;

a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor, the processor configuring the peripheral based on determining whether to use the peripheral for a phone call communicated through the data processing system in response to data from the at least one sensor and wherein the peripheral comprises at least one of an input device, to provide an input to the data processing system, and an output device, to provide an output from the data processing system.

The peripheral as in claim 1 wherein the interface is a wireless transceiver which wirelessly couples the data processing system to the peripheral and wherein the peripheral further comprises a speaker coupled to the interface and a microphone coupled to the interface and wherein the at least one sensor comprises a proximity sensor which senses a proximity of the user.

3. The peripheral as in claim 2 wherein the at least one sensor comprises an ambient light sensor.

4. The peripheral as in claim 2 wherein data from the at least one sensor is transmitted through the interface to the data processing system and wherein the interface receives an instruction from the data processing system to either disable or enable the speaker and the microphone.

5. The peripheral as in claim 1 wherein the peripheral is configured automatically, without explicit user input, in response to data from the at least one sensor and in response to data from at least one sensor on the data processing system, and wherein the data processing system comprises a wireless mobile telephone and a music player.

The peripheral as in claim 2 wherein the speaker and the microphone are enabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is next to the user'"'"'s ear and wherein the speaker and the microphone are disabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is not next to the user'"'"'s ear.

7. A system comprising:

a peripheral;

a data processing system for use with the peripheral, which is external and separate from the data processing system;

wherein the peripheral comprises;

a peripheral interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system;

at least one peripheral sensor to sense a user of the peripheral;

a peripheral processor coupled to the peripheral interface and to the at least one peripheral sensor;

wherein the data processing system comprises;

an interface to couple the data processing system to the peripheral;

at least one sensor to sense the user;

a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor and wherein the peripheral comprises at least one of an input device, to provide an input to the data processing system, and an output device, to provide an output from the data processing system.

The system as in claim 7 wherein the peripheral interface comprises a wireless transceiver which wirelessly couples the data processing system to the peripheral and wherein the peripheral further comprises a speaker coupled to the peripheral interface and a microphone coupled to the peripheral interface and wherein the wireless transceiver transmits first audio data from the microphone to the data processing system and wherein the wireless transceiver receives second audio data from the data processing system and passes the second audio data to the speaker and wherein the data processing system comprises a wireless mobile telephone transceiver.

The system as in claim 8 wherein at least one of the peripheral processor and the processor receive data from at least one of the at least one peripheral sensor and the at least one sensor and determine, based on the data, whether to use the speaker and the microphone for a phone call communicated through the wireless mobile telephone transceiver.

10. The system as in claim 9 wherein the at least one peripheral sensor comprises at least one of (a) a proximity sensor;

(b) an ambient light sensor;

(c) a temperature sensor;

(d) an accelerometer;

(e) a position sensor;

(f) an orientation sensor; and

(g) a sound sensor; and

wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one of (a) a proximity sensor;

(b) an ambient light sensor;

(c) a temperature sensor;

(d) an accelerometer;

(e) a position sensor;

(f) an orientation sensor; and

(g) a sound sensor.

11. The system as in claim 10 wherein the peripheral processor configures the speaker and the microprocessor automatically in response to outputs from the at least one peripheral sensor and the at least one sensor.

The system as in claim 11 wherein the speaker and the microphone are enabled to provide output/input capabilities for a phone call when the at least one peripheral sensor senses that the peripheral is next to the user'"'"'s ear and wherein the speaker and the microphone are not enabled to provide the output/input capabilities when the at least one sensor senses that the data processing system is next to the user'"'"'s ear.

The system as in claim 12 wherein the peripheral interface transmits the output from the at least one peripheral sensor to the data processing system which processes the output from the at least one peripheral sensor and the output from the at least one sensor and determines whether to enable the speaker and the microphone and transmits an instruction to the peripheral indicating whether to enable the speaker and the microphone.

The system as in claim 12 wherein the peripheral processor, through the peripheral interface, receives the output from the at least one sensor and processes the output from the at least one sensor and the output from the at least one peripheral sensor to determine whether to enable the speaker and the microphone.

15. The system as in claim 14 wherein the peripheral processor transmits, through the peripheral interface, an instruction to the processor to set a state of a microphone on the data processing system and a speaker on the data processing system.

16. The system as in claim 11 further comprising:

a motor vehicle interface configured to be coupled to at least one of the peripheral interface and the interface, the motor vehicle interface being coupled to an audio system of a motor vehicle, and wherein the audio system is configured to be used or not used in response to data from at least one of the at least one peripheral sensor and the at least one sensor.

17. A machine readable storage medium containing executable program instructions to cause a peripheral to be used with a data processing system, the machine readable storage medium comprising:

an instruction to exchange data between the peripheral and the data processing system with the peripheral being external and separate from the data processing system;

an instruction to obtain sensor data from at least one sensor of the peripheral, the sensor configured to sense a user;

an instruction configuring the peripheral based on determining whether to use the peripheral for a phone call communicated through the data processing system in response to the sensor data and wherein the peripheral comprises at least one of an input device, to provide an input to the data processing system, and an output device, to provide an output from the data processing system.

The medium as in claim 17 wherein the instruction to exchange data causes a wireless transceiver to communicate with the data processing system and wherein the peripheral comprises a speaker coupled to the wireless transceiver and a microphone coupled to the wireless transceiver and wherein the instruction to configure includes an instruction to configure the peripheral in response to additional sensor data from at least one sensor of the data processing system.

19. The medium as in claim 18 wherein the speaker and the microphone are configured automatically, without explicit user input, in response to the sensor data and the additional sensor data, and wherein the data processing system comprises a wireless mobile telephone.

20. The medium as in claim 19 wherein the instruction to configure causes the speaker and the microphone to be enabled when the sensor data indicates that the peripheral is next to the user'"'"'s ear.

21. A peripheral configured to be used with a data processing system, the peripheral comprising:

an interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system with the peripheral being external and separate from the data processing system;

at least one sensor to sense a user of the peripheral;

a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor, the processor configuring the data processing system in response to data from the at least one sensor and wherein the peripheral comprises at least one of an input device, to provide an input to the data processing system, and an output device, to provide an output from the data processing system, wherein the peripheral is designed for a phone call communicated through the data processing system.

The peripheral as in claim 21 wherein the interface is a wireless transceiver which wirelessly couples the data processing system to the peripheral and wherein the peripheral further comprises a speaker coupled to the interface and a microphone coupled to the interface and wherein the at least one sensor comprises a proximity sensor which senses a proximity of the user.

23. The peripheral as in claim 22 wherein the at least one sensor comprises an ambient light sensor.

24. The peripheral as in claim 22 wherein data from the at least one sensor is transmitted through the interface to the data processing system and wherein the interface transmits an instruction to the data processing system to either disable or enable a speaker and a microphone on the data processing system.

25. The peripheral as in claim 21 wherein the peripheral is configured automatically, without explicit user input, in response to data from the at least one sensor and in response to data from at least one sensor on the data processing system, and wherein the data processing system comprises a wireless mobile telephone and a music player.

The peripheral as in claim 22 wherein the speaker and the microphone are enabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is next to the user'"'"'s ear and wherein the speaker and the microphone are disabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is not next to the user'"'"'s ear.

27. A peripheral configured to be used with a data processing system, the peripheral comprising:

an interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system with the peripheral being external and separate from the data processing system;

at least one sensor to sense a context of the peripheral;

a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor, the processor configuring the peripheral in response to data from the at least one sensor and wherein the sensor is at least one of (a) a proximity sensor, (b) an ambient light sensor, (c) a sound sensor, (d) a temperature sensor, (e) an accelerometer, (f) an orientation sensor and (g) a touch input panel, wherein the interface is a wireless transceiver which wirelessly couples the data processing system to the peripheral and wherein the peripheral further comprises a speaker coupled to the interface and a microphone coupled to the interface and wherein the at least one sensor comprises a proximity sensor which senses a proximity of the user and wherein the peripheral is designed for a phone call communicated through the data processing system.

28. The peripheral as in claim 27 wherein the at least one sensor comprises an ambient light sensor.

29. The peripheral as in claim 27 wherein data from the at least one sensor is transmitted through the interface to the data processing system and wherein the interface receives an instruction from the data processing system to either disable or enable the speaker and the microphone.

30. The peripheral as in claim 27 wherein the peripheral is configured automatically, without explicit user input, in response to data from the at least one sensor and in response to data from at least one sensor on the data processing system, and wherein the data processing system comprises a wireless mobile telephone and a music player.

31. The peripheral as in claim 27 wherein the speaker and the microphone are enabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is next to the user'"'"'s ear and wherein the speaker and the microphone are disabled when the at least one sensor senses that the peripheral is not next to the user'"'"'s ear.
