Abstract

The invention provides a system and method for achieving the cosmetically beneficial effects of shrinking collagen tissue in the dermis or other areas of tissue in an effective, non-invasive manner using an array of electrodes. Systems described herein allow for improved treatment of tissue. Additional variations of the system include array of electrodes configured to minimize the energy required to produce the desired effect.

Claims

1. A method for applying energy to a region of tissue to improve a cosmetic appearance of the tissue, the method comprising:

maintaining a cooling surface at or below body temperature;

placing the cooling surface against a tissue surface;

advancing a plurality of electrodes at an oblique angle relative to the tissue surface into the tissue, each electrode including an active region at a distal portion thereof, such that the active region is directly below the cooling surface where the electrodes enter the tissue surface at an entry location that is spaced from the cooling surface to allow for direct cooling of an entire tissue region above the active region, where the electrodes do not pass through the cooling surface when entering the tissue surface; and

applying energy to the active region of the electrodes to a region of tissue beneath the tissue surface to cause a change in the region of tissue.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring the cooling surface for an increase in temperature.

3. The method of claim 1, where advancing the plurality of electrodes comprises first applying an impact force to the electrodes such that the electrodes penetrate the tissue and subsequently, advancing the electrodes further into the tissue.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

placing a portion of the surface of the tissue that is adjacent to each electrode in a state of traction as the electrodes are inserted into the tissue; and

advancing at least one of the electrodes through the tissue surface.

5. The method of claim 1, where each electrode extends through an opening in an introducer member, where pressing the introducer member against the tissue surface places the tissue surface in traction.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising a power supply configured to energize adjacent electrodes at different times.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising placing a thermoelectric cooling device in contact with to the cooling surface.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising delivering a fluid through the cooling surface.

9. The method of claim 1, where the region of tissue comprises tissue selected from the group consisting of the dermis, a tumor, and a blood vessel.

10. The method of claim 1, where the cooling surface is visually transparent.

11. The method of claim 1, where the cooling surface is visually translucent.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising marking the tissue surface using the cooling surface or one of the plurality of electrodes.

13. The method of claim 12, where marking the tissue surface comprises marking the tissue surface with an ink or dye.

14. The method of claim 13, where the ink or dye is not visible unless illuminated by a light source.

15. The method of claim 1, where the electrodes enter the tissue surface at the location that is spaced from the cooling surface to allow for direct cooling of the entire tissue region above the active region without having to cool the entry location.

16. The method of claim 1, where applying energy to the active region of the electrodes to a region of tissue beneath the tissue surface causes a temperature increase in a dermis region to about 65 degrees Celsius.

17. A method for applying energy to a region of tissue to improve a cosmetic appearance of the tissue, the method comprising:

advancing a plurality of electrodes at an oblique angle relative to a tissue surface into the tissue, each electrode including an active region at a distal portion thereof;

placing the cooling surface against the tissue surface, where the cooling surface is maintained at or below body temperature and where the active region of the electrode is directly below the cooling surface and where the entry of the electrodes at the tissue surface is at an entry location that is spaced from the cooling surface to allow for direct cooling of an entire tissue region above the active region, where the electrodes do not pass through the cooling surface when inserted into the tissue surface; and

applying energy to the active region of the electrodes to a region of tissue beneath the tissue surface to cause a change in the region of tissue.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising monitoring the cooling surface for an increase in temperature.

19. The method of claim 17, where advancing the plurality of electrodes comprises first applying an impact force to the electrodes such that the electrodes penetrate the tissue and subsequently, advancing the electrodes further into the tissue.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

placing a portion of the surface of the tissue that is adjacent to each electrode in a state of traction as the electrodes are inserted into the tissue; and

advancing at least one of the electrodes through the tissue surface.

21. The method of claim 17, where each electrode extends through an opening in an introducer member, where pressing the introducer member against the tissue surface places the tissue surface in traction.

22. The method of claim 17, further comprising activating a power supply to energize adjacent electrodes at different times.

23. The method of claim 17, further comprising placing a thermoelectric cooling device in contact with to the cooling surface.

24. The method of claim 17, further comprising delivering a fluid through the cooling surface.

25. The method of claim 17, where the region of tissue comprises tissue is selected from the group consisting of the dermis, a tumor, and a blood vessel.

26. The method of claim 17, where the cooling surface is visually transparent.

27. The method of claim 17, where the cooling surface is visually translucent.

28. The method of claim 17, further comprising marking the tissue surface using the cooling surface or one of the plurality of electrodes.

29. The method of claim 28, where marking the tissue surface comprises marking the tissue surface with an ink or dye.

30. The method of claim 29, where the ink or dye is not visible unless illuminated by a light source.

31. The method of claim 17, where the electrodes enter the tissue surface at the location that is spaced from the cooling surface to allow for direct cooling of the entire tissue region above the active region without having to cool the entry location.

32. The method of claim 17, where applying energy to the active region of the electrodes to a region of tissue beneath the tissue surface causes a temperature increase in a dermis region to about 65 degrees Celsius.
