Abstract

Methods and apparatus for positioning antennas of a first wireless cell to form MIMO physical sectors and MIMO virtual sectors. Selecting a MIMO virtual sector for communication responsive to throughput, data throughput, signal-to-noise ratio, signal error rate, data error rate, retransmission requests, interference, rejection of multipath signals, transmission rate, and signal strength.

Claims

1. A first wireless cell for communicating with a provided wireless device, the first wireless cell comprising:

a plurality of directional antennas;

at least two radios;

wherein;

at least two antennas couple to each radio respectively;

the plurality of antennas are collocated such that a physical sector of each antenna of the plurality extends outwardly from the first wireless cell;

the antennas that couple to any one radio are positioned such that a center of an angle of coverage of the physical sector of each antenna is oriented in a unique direction with respect to the first wireless cell;

the at least two radios communicate with the wireless device using one antenna of each radio respectively whereby the one antenna of the at least two radios respectively operate as a MIMO antenna; and

the physical sector of the one antenna used by any one radio to communicate with the wireless device at least partially overlaps the physical sector of the one antenna used by the other radios respectively to communicate with the wireless device.

2. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein the physical sectors of the antennas that couple to any one radio do not substantially overlap.

3. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein the physical sectors of the antennas that couple to any one radio at least partially overlap.

4. The first wireless cell of claim 3 wherein an angular overlap of the physical sector of any one antenna with the physical sector of any other antenna that couples to the same radio is at least 30 degrees.

5. The first wireless cell of claim 3 wherein an angular overlap of the physical sector of any one antenna with the physical sector of any other antenna that couples to the same radio is at least 16 percent of the physical sector of any one antenna.

6. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein the physical sectors of the antennas that couple to any one radio form a combined angle of coverage of about 360 degrees.

7. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein the physical sector of the one antenna used by any one radio to communicate with the wireless device substantially overlaps the physical sector of the one antenna used by the other radios respectively to communicate with the wireless device.

8. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein the antennas of all radios are positioned such that the center of an angle of coverage of the physical sector of each antenna is oriented in a unique direction with respect to the first wireless cell.

9. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein during communication with the wireless client, less than all, but at least two radios of the at least two radios transmit using the one antenna of each radio respectively.

10. The first wireless cell of claim 1 wherein during communication with the wireless client, less than all, but at least two radios of the at least two radios receive using the one antenna of each radio respectively.

11. A method performed by a first wireless cell for communicating with a wireless device, the method comprising:

selecting a combination of one antenna from each radio, each radio comprising at least two antennas, the first wireless cell comprising at least two radios;

detecting a signal quality while operating the selected combination of one antenna from each radio as a MIMO antenna;

repeating selecting and detecting for each combination of one antenna from each radio; and

in accordance with detecting, operating the antennas of the combination that provides a signal quality greater than a threshold as the MIMO antenna to communicate with the wireless device;

wherein;

the antennas of all radios are collocated such that a physical sector of each antenna extends outwardly from the first wireless cell;

the antennas of any one radio are positioned such that a center of an angle of coverage of the physical sector of each antenna is oriented in a unique direction with respect to the first wireless cell; and

the physical sector of the one antenna of any one radio used to communicate with the wireless device at least partially overlaps the physical sector of the one antenna used by the other radios respectively to communicate with the wireless device.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting comprises detecting the signal quality for each one channel of a plurality of channels.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting comprises assigning each one antenna of the combination a same channel.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting comprises detecting a signal strength.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting comprises detecting a throughput.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein detecting comprises detecting a signal-to-noise ratio.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein selecting comprises using an RF switch to select the combination of one antenna from each radio.

18. The method of claim 11 wherein operating comprises transmitting a same radio signal through at least two antennas of the combination.

19. The method of claim 11 wherein operating comprises receiving a same radio signal through at least two antennas of the combination.
