System and method for managing patient-related data
First Claim
1. A system for managing patient-related data, the system comprising:
- a gate having a base, a first side wall extending up from the base, and a second side wall extending up from the base, the first and second side walls defining a walkway there between;
a primary coil located in the first side wall of the gate;
a pressure sensor attached to the base of the gate, the pressure sensor configured to detect a presence of a patient within the walkway of the gate;
a processor coupled to the primary coil; and
a memory device electrically coupled to the processor, the memory device having stored therein a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to;
energize the primary coil to transcutaneously transmit a sufficient amount of energy to an electronic circuit of an orthopaedic implant to power the electronic circuit in response to the pressure sensor detecting the presence of the patient within the walkway of the gate;
receive implant identification data from the orthopaedic implant in response to the energize step,receive first security code data entered by the patient on a first computing device,receive second security code data entered by a person other than the patient on a second computing device,determine validity of the first and second security code data, and retrieve patient-related data from a database based on the implant identification data if the first and second security code data is valid.

Abstract
A system and method for managing patient-related data includes transmitting a power signal to an orthopaedic implant, receiving implant identification data from the orthopaedic implant, and retrieving patient-related data from a database based on the implant identification data. The method may also include receiving security code data and determining the validity of such security code data prior to the retrieving the patient-related data from the database. The method may further include updating an electronically-stored patient queue based on the patient-related data, assigning a patient room to a patient identified by the patient-related data, and transmitting the patient related data to a client machine located in the patient room and/or a portable media device.
