Abstract

An apparatus comprising a housing, a controller, a fluid source, a negative pressure source, and a canister. The controller, the fluid source, the negative pressure source, and the canister are carried by the housing. The fluid source is couplable to the bandage. The negative pressure source is couplable to the bandage through the canister. The controller is operable to provide a first signal resulting in automated fluid delivery to the bandage from the fluid source. The controller is operable to provide a second signal resulting in the negative pressure source applying negative pressure to the bandage through the canister.

Claims

1. An apparatus for use with a bandage which covers a wound, the apparatus comprising:

a housing;

a controller, a fluid source, a negative pressure source, a pressure sensor, and a canister, all of which are carried by the housing;

the fluid source being configured to be coupled to the bandage;

the negative pressure source being configured to be coupled to the bandage through the canister; and

the controller being programmed to to provide a first signal resulting in automated fluid delivery to the bandage from the fluid source, and the controller being programmed to to provide a second signal resulting in the negative pressure source applying negative pressure to the bandage through the canister,

where the canister includes a chamber, an inlet port configured to permit waste material to enter the chamber from the bandage, an outlet port configured to permit communication between the chamber and the vacuum source, and a pressure port configured to permit communication between the chamber and the pressure sensor such that the pressure sensor can sense pressure within the chamber, and

where the apparatus is configured such that the pressure port is not in fluid communication with the outlet port outside the chamber; and

where the controller is configured to detect if waste material in the chamber at least partially occludes the outlet port by detecting a change in pressure within the chamber.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a user interface carried by the housing and coupled to the controller.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the user interface comprises a touch screen panel.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the user interface allows a user to program the controller to irrigate a wound with fluid and to remove exudate and fluid from the wound at user-defined intervals.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the user interface provides feedback to the user regarding the status and operation of the apparatus.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing has a shaped cavity and the canister is received in the shaped cavity.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the fluid source is positioned at an elevated position relative to the housing.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a power supply carried by the housing and coupled to the controller.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the power supply comprises a battery pack.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a liquid solidifier material located in the canister.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller has first and second portions operable to provide the first and second signals.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a sensor coupled to the controller and operable to suspend the operation of the first portion when the fluid source is removed from the housing.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the housing has a shaped cavity for receiving the canister, further comprising a sensor coupled to the controller and operable to suspend the operation of the second portion when the canister is removed from the shaped cavity.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the fluid source comprises a syringe having a plunger, further comprising a drive coupled to the controller and operable to drive the plunger to expel fluid from the syringe.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the negative pressure source comprises a vacuum pump.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the canister has an inlet port configured to be in communication with the bandage and an outlet port configured to be in communication with the negative pressure source.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the inlet port includes a valve to prevent fluid in the canister from exiting the canister through the inlet port.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the outlet port includes a hydrophobic filter to block fluid in the canister from exiting the canister through the outlet port.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the inlet port is located above the outlet port.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the negative pressure ceases to be applied to the canister when the fluid level in the canister occludes the outlet port.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the canister is disposable.
