Abstract

A method can be used to analyze the “real-estate” performance of content items within a network site. The method can comprise determining the click distance to reach each content item and determining the performance of each content item. The method can also comprise calculating a predicted value for performance based on statistical relationship between location and performance observed in a population of content items. The method can comprise comparing the predicted and actual performance. If a content item has an actual performance greater than its predicted performance, then it may be promoted to a better location in the site and the converse for poorer performing content. Such an analysis may be performed using a graph or tabular data.

Claims

1. A method for analyzing performance of content items within a network site, comprising:

at a server computer having access to network activity information on the network site, determining, for each of the content items (c_i) residing at a network address within the network site, a measure of how many clicks it takes, on average, for a user to reach c_i during a session at the network site;

determining a real-estate performance value for c_i utilizing the measure associated with C_i; and

generating a graph displaying the content items, wherein the graph is generated utilizing the real-estate performance value for c_i.

2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

recommending moving a first content item from a first network address to a different network address, wherein the content items comprise the first content item.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

moving a first content item from a first network address to a second network address within the network site, wherein the content items comprise the first content item.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the second network address is a different number of clicks away from a main network address of the network site than that of the first network address.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein generating the graph further comprises placing the real-estate performance value near c_i on the graph.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

determining an actual performance number for c_i and a predicted performance number for c_i; and

comparing the actual performance number for c_i and the predicted performance number for c_i to obtain a relative value corresponding to c_i.

7. The method according to claim 6, wherein generating the graph further comprises placing the relative value near c_i on the graph.

8. A data processing system readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable program code adapted to be executed by a computer to implement a method for analyzing performance of content items within a network site, the computer readable program code comprising:

an instruction for determining, for each of the content items (c_i) residing at a network address within the network site, a measure of how many clicks it takes, on average, for a user to reach c_i during a session at the network site;

an instruction for determining a real-estate performance value for c_i utilizing the measure associated with c_i; and

an instruction for generating a graph displaying the content items, wherein the graph is generated utilizing the real-estate performance value for c_i.

The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the computer readable program code further comprises an instruction for recommending moving a first content item from a first network address to a different network address, wherein the content items comprise the first content item.

The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the computer readable program code further comprises an instruction for moving a first content item from a first network address to a second network address within the network site, wherein the content items comprise the first content item.

11. The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the second network address is a different number of clicks away from a main network address of the network site than that of the first network address.

12. The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the instruction for generating the graph further comprises an instruction for placing the real-estate performance value near c_i on the graph.

13. The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the computer readable program code further comprises:

an instruction for determining an actual performance number for c_i and a predicted performance number for c₁; and

an instruction for comparing the actual performance number for c_i and the predicted performance number for c_i to obtain a relative value corresponding to c_i.

14. The data processing system readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the computer readable program code further comprises an instruction for placing the relative value near c_i on the graph.

15. A data processing system for analyzing performance of content items within a network site, comprising:

a storage location storing network activity information on the network site; and

a server computer coupled to the storage location comprising a processor and a computer readable storage medium storing instructions translatable by the processor to cause the server computer to perform;

determining, for each of the content items (c_i) residing at a network address within the network site, a measure of how many clicks it takes, on average, for a user to reach c_i during a session at the network site;

determining a real-estate performance value for c_i utilizing the measure associated with c_l; and

generating a graph displaying the content items, wherein the graph is generated utilizing the real-estate performance value for c_i.

16. The data processing system of claim 15, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor to cause the server computer to perform:

recommending moving a first content item from a first network address to a second network address, wherein the content items comprise the first content item.

17. The data processing system of claim 16, wherein the second network address is a different number of clicks away from a main network address of the network site than that of the first network address.

18. The data processing system of claim 15, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor to cause the server computer to perform:

placing the real-estate performance value near c_i on the graph.

19. The data processing system of claim 15, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor to cause the server computer to perform:

determining an actual performance number for c_i and a predicted performance number for c₁; and

comparing the actual performance number for c_i and the predicted performance number for c_i to obtain a relative value corresponding to c_i.

20. The data processing system of claim 19, wherein the instructions are further translatable by the processor to cause the server computer to perform:

placing the relative value near c_i on the graph.
