Abstract

A cleaning machine for cleaning a surface is provided. The cleaning machine includes a base assembly that moves along the surface and a liquid distribution system associated with the base assembly for distributing the cleaning solution to the cleaning surface. A suction nozzle assembly is mounted to the base assembly and includes a front nozzle portion and a rear nozzle portion. The front nozzle portion defines a fluid flow path having an inlet opening and an outlet opening and the rear nozzle portion defines a fluid flow path having an inlet opening and an outlet opening. A suction source is in fluid communication with the suction nozzle for applying suction to draw the cleaning solution and dirt from the surface and through the suction nozzle assembly. The fluid flow path of the front nozzle portion is closed in response to the base assembly moving in one of the forward direction and rear direction. The fluid flow path of the rear nozzle portion is closed in response to the base assembly moving in other one of the forward and rear direction.

Claims

1. A cleaning machine configured to clean dirt, the cleaning machine comprising:

a base assembly;

a liquid distribution system configured to distribute cleaning solution;

a suction nozzle assembly mounted to said base assembly, said suction nozzle assembly including a front nozzle portion and a rear nozzle portion, said front nozzle portion defining a fluid flow path having an inlet opening and an outlet opening, said rear nozzle portion defining a fluid flow path having an inlet opening and an outlet opening;

a suction source in fluid communication with said suction nozzle and configured to apply suction to draw the cleaning solution and dirt through the suction nozzle assembly;

a recovery tank in fluid communication with said suction nozzle assembly, said recovery tank configured to collect the cleaning solution and dirt drawn through the suction nozzle assembly; and

a valve assembly in fluid communication with said suction nozzle assembly, wherein in response to a direction of movement of the base assembly, said valve assembly partially covers the front nozzle portion and partially covers the rear nozzle portion such that the cleaning solution and dirt is drawn through both said front nozzle portion and said rear nozzle portion.

2. The cleaning machine of claim 1, further comprising a rotatable brush assembly positioned intermediate said front nozzle portion and said rear nozzle portion.

3. The cleaning machine of claim 1, wherein the valve assembly comprises a movable member in fluid communication with the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion and in fluid communication with the outlet of the rear nozzle portion.

The cleaning machine of claim 3, wherein the movable member moves between a first position, wherein the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion is substantially open and the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion is substantially covered, a second position, wherein the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion is substantially open and the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion is substantially covered, and a third position between the first position and the second position, wherein both the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion and the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion are partially covered.

5. The cleaning machine of claim 4, further comprising a direction sensor, and wherein a position of the movable member is controlled by a micro controller configured to receive signals indicative of a direction of travel from the direction sensor.

6. The cleaning machine of claim 5, further comprising a stepper-motor controlled by the micro controller, and wherein the movable member is configured to be actuated by the stepper-motor.

7. The cleaning machine of claim 5, further comprising a manual actuator, and wherein the position of the movable member may be selected by a manual actuator configured to override the micro controller.

8. The cleaning machine of claim 3, wherein the valve assembly further comprises a cylindrical body housing the movable member, and wherein the movable member has an arcuate cross-section, the movable member being configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis within the cylindrical body.

9. The cleaning machine of claim 1, wherein the recovery tank is removably mounted to one of a handle that is connected to the base assembly and said base assembly.

The cleaning machine of claim 1, wherein said liquid distribution system further includes a front distributor and a rear distributor, one of said front distributor and said rear distributor dispensing said cleaning solution in response to said base assembly moving in a forward direction and the other of said front distributor and said rear distributor dispensing said cleaning solution in response to said base assembly moving in a rearward direction.

The cleaning machine of claim 4, further comprising a support wheel mounted to said base assembly, said support wheel configured to rotate in a first direction when said base assembly is moved in a forward direction, and said support wheel configured to rotate in a second direction when said base assembly is moved in a rearward direction.

The cleaning machine of claim 1, wherein said liquid distribution system includes a first source configured to provide a supply of a first cleaning solution and a second source configured to provide a supply of a second cleaning solution, said liquid distribution system further including at least one front distributor and one rear distributor, one of said front distributor and said rear distributor configured to dispense said first cleaning solution and the other one of said front distributor and said rear distributor configured to dispense said second cleaning solution.

13. The cleaning machine of claim 12, further comprising a rotatable brush assembly positioned intermediate said front and rear distributors.

The cleaning machine of claim 12, wherein said front distributor is configured to dispense the first cleaning solution in response to said base assembly moving in a forward direction, and said rear distributor is configured to dispense said second cleaning solution in response to said base assembly moving in a rearward direction.

The cleaning machine of claim 14, wherein said rear distributor is configured to not dispense the cleaning solution in response to said base assembly moving in the forward direction and said front distributor is configured to not dispense the cleaning solution in response to the base assembly moving in the rear direction.

16. The cleaning machine of claim 12, wherein said first cleaning solution includes detergent and water and said second cleaning solution includes clean water.

17. The cleaning machine of claim 12, wherein the valve assembly comprises a movable member in fluid communication with the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion and the outlet of the rear nozzle portion.

The cleaning machine of claim 17, wherein the movable member is configured to move between a first position wherein the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion is substantially open and the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion is substantially covered, a second position wherein the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion is substantially open and the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion is substantially covered, and a third position between the first position and the second position wherein both the outlet opening of the front nozzle portion and the outlet opening of the rear nozzle portion are partially covered.

19. The cleaning machine of claim 18, further comprising a direction sensor, and wherein the position of the movable member is controlled by a micro controller configured to receive signals indicative of a direction of travel from the direction sensor.

20. The cleaning machine of claim 19, further comprising a manual actuator, and wherein the position of the movable member may be selected by a manual actuator configured to override the micro controller.

21. The cleaning machine of claim 20, further comprising a stepper-motor controlled by the micro controller, and wherein the movable member is configured to be actuated by the stepper-motor.

22. The cleaning machine of claim 17, wherein the valve assembly further comprises a cylindrical body housing the movable member and wherein the movable member has an arcuate cross-section, the movable member being configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis within the cylindrical body.
