Abstract

The invention provides a system and battery including a state-of-charge indicator (SOCI) to monitor and display the amount of charge within the battery. The SOCI is capable of operating in a hibernate mode, an active mode, and/or a sleep mode. The battery may be manufactured, shipped and/or stored with the SOCI operating in a power-saving hibernate mode. The SOCI may exit the hibernate mode and begin operating in active mode if a physical key connected to the battery is removed. In addition, the SOCI may operate in a sleep mode while the battery is not being used to conserve power. Furthermore, the invention provides a method of making a battery including a SOCI to monitor and display the state of charge of the battery.

Claims

1. A battery comprising:

a connector;

a battery cell stack coupled to the connector, the battery cell stack comprising at least one battery cell;

a state-of-charge indicator coupled to the battery cell stack within the battery and to the connector for selectively operating in an active mode or a hibernation mode as a function of whether a detachable physical key is coupled to the connector, wherein the state-of-charge indicator operates in the hibernation mode when the detachable physical key is coupled to the connector and operates in the active mode when the detachable physical key is not coupled to the connector.

2. The battery of claim 1 wherein:

the connector comprises a ground receptacle and a clock signal receptacle;

the battery cell stack comprises a ground line connected to the ground receptacle of the connector;

the state-of-charge indicator comprises a clock signal connected to the clock signal receptacle of the connector;

the detachable physical key couples the clock signal receptacle to the ground receptacle of the connector when the detachable physical key is coupled to the connector; and

the state-of-charge indicator operates in the hibernation mode when the clock signal receptacle is coupled to the ground receptacle and operates in the active mode when the clock signal receptacle is not coupled to the ground receptacle.

3. The battery of claim 1 wherein the state-of-charge indicator continuously monitors at least one of a current, a voltage and a temperature of the battery cell stack when operating in the active mode.

The battery of claim 3 wherein the state-of-charge indicator ceases continuously monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack and operating in the active mode when the state-of-charge indicator does not detect a significant charge draw from the battery cell stack for a predetermined period of time while the state-of-charge indicator is operating in the active mode and begins operating in a sleep mode wherein the state-of-charge indicator periodically monitors the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack when operating in the sleep mode.

The battery of claim 4 wherein the state of charge indicator ceases operating in the sleep mode and periodically monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack and begins operating in the active mode and continuously monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack when the state of charge indicator detects a the significant charge draw from the battery cell stack while operating in the sleep mode.

6. The battery of claim 1 further comprising a complete discharge device coupled to the battery stack for completely discharging the battery stack when a minimum threshold voltage of the battery stack is reached.

7. A battery comprising:

a connector;

a battery cell stack coupled to the connector, the battery cell stack comprising at least one battery cell;

a state-of-charge indicator coupled to the battery cell stack within the battery and to the connector for selectively operating in an active mode or a hibernation mode as a function of whether a detachable physical key is coupled to the connector, wherein the state-of-charge indicator operates in the hibernation mode when the detachable physical key is not coupled to the connector and operates in the active mode when the detachable physical key is coupled to the connector.

8. The battery of claim 7 wherein:

the connector comprises a ground receptacle and a clock signal receptacle,

the battery cell stack comprises a ground line connected to the ground receptacle of the connector,

the state-of-charge indicator comprises a clock signal connected to the clock signal receptacle of the connector,

the detachable physical key couples the clock signal receptacle to the ground receptacle of the connector when the detachable physical key is coupled to the connector, and

the state-of-charge indicator operates in the active mode when the clock signal receptacle is coupled to the ground receptacle and operates in the hibernation mode when the clock signal receptacle is not coupled to the ground receptacle.

9. The battery of claim 7 wherein the state-of-charge indicator continuously monitors at least one of a current, a voltage and a temperature of the battery cell stack when operating in the active mode.

The battery of claim 9 wherein the state-of-charge indicator ceases continuously monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack and operating in the active mode when the state-of-charge indicator does not detect a significant charge draw from the battery cell stack for a predetermined period of time while the state-of-charge indicator is operating in the active mode and begins operating in a sleep mode wherein the state-of-charge indicator periodically monitors the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack when operating in the sleep mode.

The battery of claim 10 wherein the state of charge indicator ceases operating in the sleep mode and periodically monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack and begins operating in the active mode and continuously monitoring the at least one of the current, the voltage, and the temperature of the battery cell stack when the state of charge indicator detects the significant charge draw from the battery cell stack while operating in the sleep mode.

12. The battery of claim 7 further comprising a complete discharge device coupled to the battery stack for completely discharging the battery stack when a minimum threshold voltage of the battery stack is reached.

13. A method of making a device to indicate an amount of available charge in at least one battery cell, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a battery with at least one battery cell, a ground signal, and a clock signal,

coupling a state-of-charge indicator to the at least one battery cell within the battery, and

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in a hibernation mode by decoupling a detachable physical key from the ground signal and the clock signal.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of:

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in an active mode when the detachable physical key is coupled to the ground signal and the clock signal.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in the active mode further comprises the step of:

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to begin continuously monitoring at least one of current, voltage and temperature of the at least one battery when the detachable physical key is coupled to the ground signal and the clock signal.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in a sleep mode if the state-of-charge indicator does not detect a significant charge draw from the at least one battery for a predetermined period of time while the state-of-charge indicator is operating in the active mode.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the step of configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in the sleep mode comprises the step of:

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to cease continuously monitoring the at least one battery if the state-of-charge indicator does not detect the significant charge draw from the at least one battery for the predetermined period of time while the state-of-charge indicator is operating in the active mode.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the step of configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in the sleep mode comprises the step of:

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to periodically monitor at least one of current, voltage and temperature of the at least one battery if the state-of-charge indicator does not detect a significant charge draw from the at least one battery for the predetermined period of time while the state-of-charge indicator is operating in the active mode.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of

configuring the state-of-charge indicator to operate in the active mode when the state-of-charge indicator detects the significant charge draw in the at least one battery while operating in the sleep mode.

20. The method of claim 14, further comprising the steps of:

coupling a complete discharge device to the at least one battery cell; and

completely discharging the at least one battery cell,

wherein the at least one battery cell is completely discharged when a minimum threshold voltage is reached.
