Abstract

An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programmable attenuation and a programmable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator. The VCOs in the PLLs are centered using a control circuit to center the tuning capacitance range. A differential crystal oscillator is advantageously used as a frequency reference. Differential signal transmission is advantageously used throughout the receiver.

Claims

1. A cable set top box, comprising:

an integrated receiver configured to provide received data based upon a received signal, the integrated receiver comprising;

a first mixer, disposed upon a substrate, configured to convert a frequency of the received signal to a first intermediate frequency (IF),

a first filter bank, disposed upon the substrate, configured to filter an output of the first mixer, the first filter bank including a plurality of cascaded filters, each of the plurality of cascaded filters having a substantially identical frequency response, and

a second mixer, disposed upon the substrate, configured to convert a frequency of an output of the first filter bank from the first IF to a second IF to provide the received data; and

a set top box decoder configured to provide an audio output and a video output based upon the received data.

2. The cable set top box of claim 1, wherein the integrated receiver further comprises:

a third mixer configured to convert a frequency of an output of the second mixer from the second IF to a third IF to provide the received data.

3. The cable set top box of claim 2, further comprising:

a second filter bank configured to filter an output of the second mixer, wherein the third mixer is configured to convert a frequency of an output of the second filter bank from the second IF to the third IF.

4. The cable set top box of claim 3, wherein the second filter bank is characterized as having a center frequency substantially equal to the second IF.

5. The cable set top box of claim 1, wherein the first filter bank is characterized as having a center frequency substantially equal to the first IF.

6. The cable set top box of claim 1, further comprising:

a decryption box configured to descramble the received data to provide descrambled received data,

wherein the set top box decoder is configured to provide the audio output and the video output based upon the descrambled received data.

7. The cable set top box of claim 1, wherein the integrated receiver is implemented as part of a set top transceiver, the set top transceiver including a transmitter configured to modulate data to be transmitted on a radio frequency carrier for transmission.

8. The cable set top box of claim 7, further comprising:

an input/output capability module configured to receive the data to be transmitted from a user.

9. The cable set top box of claim 1, wherein the received signal is in Internet Protocol (IP) format.

10. The cable set top box of claim 1, wherein the substrate is configured to provide a physical medium upon which the integrated receiver is disposed, and wherein the first mixer, the first filter bank, and the second mixer are disposed upon the substrate.

11. A method for processing a received signal, comprising:

(a) processing the received signal to provide received data, the processing comprising;

(i) converting a frequency of the received signal to a first intermediate frequency (IF);

(ii) filtering, by a first filter from among a plurality of cascaded filters, the converted signal from step (i);

(iii) filtering, by a second filter from among the plurality of cascaded filters, the filtered signal from step (ii), the first filter and the second filter having a substantially identical frequency response; and

(iv) converting a frequency of the filtered signal from step (iii) from the first IF to a second IF to provide the received data; and

(b) generating an audio output and a video output based upon the received data.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the processing further comprises:

(v) converting a frequency the converted signal from step (iv) from the second IF to a third IF to provide the received data.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the processing further comprises:

(v) filtering, by a first filter from among a second plurality of cascaded filters, the converted signal from step (iv); and

(vi) filtering, by a second filter from among the second plurality of cascaded filters, the filtered signal from step (v), the first filter from among the second plurality of cascaded filters and the second filter from among the second plurality of cascaded filters having a substantially identical frequency response.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

(c) descrambling the received data to provide descrambled received data, and wherein step (b) comprises;

(b)(i) generating the audio output and the video output based upon the descrambled received data.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

(c) modulating data to be transmitted on a radio frequency carrier for transmission.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

(d) receiving the data to be transmitted from a user.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein step (c) comprises:

(c)(i) modulating a request for service on a radio frequency carrier for transmission.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the received signal is in Internet Protocol (IP) format.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein steps (a) and (b) are performed on a common substrate.
