Abstract

A flexible conduit for insertion into a body lumen comprises a plurality of elements coupled end to end to define a conduit lumen. A first one of the elements includes a male portion and a female portion. A second element includes a female portion having an inner surface configured to engage a male portion of an outer surface of the first element to form a first ball joint. A third element includes a male portion, an outer surface of the male portion of the third element configured to engage an inner surface of the female portion of the first element to form a second ball joint. The male and female portions of the first element are adapted to frictionally engage the female portion of the second element and the male portion of the third element to establish a rigid connection therebetween.

Claims

1. A flexible conduit for insertion into a body lumen, comprising:

a plurality of elements coupled end to end with lumens of the elements aligned to define a conduit lumen, the plurality of elements including;

a first element including a male portion and a female portion;

a second element including a female portion having an inner surface extending along a curve corresponding to a curve of the male portion of an outer surface of the first element so that, when the male portion of the first element is received within the female portion of the second element, the first and second elements form a first ball joint;

a third element including a male portion, an outer surface of the male portion of the third element being curved along a shape corresponding to a curve of an inner surface of the female portion of the first element so that, when the male portion of the third element is received within the female portion of the first element, the first and third elements form a second ball and socket joint, the male and female portions of the first element being adapted to frictionally engage respectively, the female portion of the second element and the male portion of the third element to establish a rigidity of the conduit sufficient to retain its shape and absorb forces applied thereto as a flexible instrument is inserted through the conduit lumen; and

a force applying mechanism received within the conduit lumen and being movable between a first retracted configuration and a second expanded configuration applying a force radially outward against the male portion of the first element to increase a frictional engagement between the male portion of the first element and the female portion of the second element and increase a stiffness of the flexible conduit.

2. The flexible conduit according to claim 1, further comprising:

a first projection extending from one of the first and second elements to mate with a first receptacle formed on the other one of the first and second elements to prevent relative rotation therebetween about a longitudinal axis of the conduit; and

a second projection separated radially from the first projection around the one of the first and second elements and further comprising a second receptacle separated radially from the first receptacle around the other of the first and second elements by an angle corresponding to the separation of the first and second projections so that, when the first projection is received within the first receptacle, the second projection is aligned with the second receptacle.

3. The flexible conduit according to claim 2, wherein the first receptacle is a slot, a length of which is selected to permit a desired degree of movement of the first projection therein while a width of the slot is selected to snugly receive the first projection therein.

4. The flexible conduit according to claim 2, wherein the first and second projections are substantially cylindrical and are separated from the first and second receptacles by approximately 180°

.

The flexible conduit according claim 1, wherein the outer surface of the male portion of the first element is formed as a portion of a first sphere and wherein the inner surface of the female portion of the second element is formed as a portion of a second sphere having a diameter greater than that of the first sphere by a predetermined tolerance.

6. The flexible conduit according to claim 1, wherein the force applying mechanism is one of an inflatable element and a mechanical element.

The flexible conduit according to claim 1, wherein the male portion of the first element includes a plurality of slots extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the conduit, the slots separating a plurality of tabs from one another, wherein the force applying mechanism applies the force to the tabs to flex the tabs radially outward.

10. The flexible conduit according to claim 1, further comprising a flexible sheath surrounding the first, second and third elements to present a smooth exterior surface of the conduit.

11. The flexible conduit according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the outer surface of the male portion and the inner surface of the female portion of the first element is surface treated to enhance a frictional coupling with a surface mated thereto.

8. A flexible conduit for insertion into a body lumen, comprising:

a plurality of elements coupled end to end with lumens of the elements aligned to define a conduit lumen, the plurality of elements including;

a first element including a male portion and a female portion;

a second element including a female portion having an inner surface extending along a curve corresponding to a curve of the male portion of an outer surface of the first element so that, when the male portion of the first element is received within the female portion of the second element, the first and second elements form a first ball joint;

a third element including a male portion, an outer surface of the male portion of the third element being curved along a shape corresponding to a curve of an inner surface of the female portion of the first element so that, when the male portion of the third element is received within the female portion of the first element, the first and third elements form a second ball and socket joint, the male and female portions of the first element being adapted to frictionally engage respectively, the female portion of the second element and the male portion of the third element to establish a rigidity of the conduit sufficient to retain its shape and absorb forces applied thereto as a flexible instrument is inserted through the conduit lumen; and

a force applying mechanism received around the first and third elements, the force applying mechanism being movable between a first retracted configuration and a second expanded configuration applying a force directed radially inward against the female portion of the first element increasing a frictional engagement between the female portion of the first element and the male portion of the third element and increasing a stiffness of the flexible conduit.

9. The flexible conduit according to claim 8, wherein the force applying mechanism is one of an inflatable element and a mechanical element.

12. A flexible conduit, comprising:

a plurality of elements coupled end to end with lumens of the elements aligned to define a conduit lumen, the plurality of elements including;

a first element including a male portion bonded to a female portion;

a second element including a female portion sized to receive therewithin the male portion of the first element, an outer surface of the male portion of the first element being curved along a shape corresponding to a curve of an inner surface of the female portion of the second element to form a first ball and socket joint; and

a third element including a male portion sized for reception within the female portion of the first element, an outer surface of the male portion of the third element being curved along a shape corresponding to a curve of an inner surface of the female portion of the first element to form a second ball and socket joint;

a force applying mechanism applying varying force to the flexible elements to dynamically adjust a frictional force between the male portion of the first element and the female portion of the second element and the male portion of the third element and the female portion of the second element to adjust a longitudinal stiffness of the conduit;

a first projection extending from one of the first and second elements to mate with a first receptacle formed on the other of the first and second elements to prevent relative rotation therebetween about a longitudinal axis of the conduit;

a second projection extending from one of the first and second elements mating with a second receptacle formed on the other of the first and second elements, the second receptacle including a second slot a length of which in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the conduit is selected to permit a desired degree of movement of the first and second elements relative to one another axially while a width of the second slot is selected to snugly receive the second projection; and

a third projection extending from one of the first and third elements mating with a third receptacle formed on the other of the first and third elements.

The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the first receptacle is a slot, a length of which is selected to permit a desired degree of movement of the first and second elements relative to one another axially while a width of the first slot is selected to snugly receive the first projection.

The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the first and second projections are separated from one another about a circumference of the one of the first and second elements by a first angle and wherein the first and second slots are separated from one another around the circumference of the other of the first and second elements by an angle substantially equal to the first angle so that, when the first projection is received within the first slot, the second projection is aligned with the second slot.

15. The flexible conduit according to claim 14, wherein the first angle is approximately 180°

.

16. The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the one of the third projection and the third receptacle formed on the first element may be circumferentially offset relative to the one of the first projection and the first receptacle formed on the first element.

The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the first, second and third elements are substantially cylindrical and wherein outer surfaces of the male portions of the first, second and third elements are formed as partially spherical surfaces having a first diameter and wherein inner surfaces of the female portions of the first, second and third elements are formed as partially spherical surfaces having diameters greater than the first diameter by a tolerance amount selected to achieve a desired frictional coupling between the inner surfaces of the female portions and outer surfaces of male portions mounted therewithin.

18. The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the male portion of the first element comprises a plurality of flexible tabs separated from one another by slits extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the conduit.

The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein the force applying mechanism comprises an inflatable element coupled to a source of inflation fluid so that, when inflated, the inflatable element applies a radially outwardly directed force to the male portion of the first element urging the male portion of the first element radially outward into engagement with the female portion of the second element.

20. The flexible conduit according to claim 19, wherein the inflatable element is one of a balloon and an inflatable sleeve.

21. The flexible conduit according to claim 12, wherein a force applied by the force applying mechanism is selected to obtain a desired stiffness of the flexible conduit.

22. The flexible conduit according to claim 12, further comprising an external cover formed as one of a braid and PVC extending over the first, second and third elements to form a substantially smooth outer surface of the conduit.

23. The flexible conduit according to claim 12, further comprising a coil spring stabilizer disposed in the conduit lumen.
