Abstract

A patient support including a traction device for powered movement of the patient support.

Claims

1. A patient support, comprising:

a frame configured to support a person in at least a horizontal position,

a motor,

a propulsion device coupled to the motor and coupled to the frame to move the patient support from one location to another location in response to output from the motor,

a load cell operable to receive an input from a user and provide a signal based on the input, and

a controller coupled to the load cell to receive the signal therefrom, the controller being operable to provide a control signal based on the signal and the second signal and command the motor to operate at a specific output based on the control signal.

2. The patient support of claim 1, wherein the propulsion device includes a wheel.

3. The patient support of claim 2, comprising a lifter configured to move the wheel between a first position spaced apart from a floor and a second position in contact with the floor.

4. The patient support of claim 1, comprising a user input device operably coupled to the load cell.

5. The patient support of claim 1, comprising an external power detector operable to determine if external power is supplied to the controller and provide a power indication signal in response thereto.

6. The patient support of claim 5, wherein the controller receives the power indication signal from the external power detector and provides a control signal to the rolling support lifter in response to the power indication signal.

7. The patient support of claim 1, comprising a plurality of casters supporting the frame and a caster mode detector operable to detect a mode of operation of the casters and provide a caster indication signal in response thereto.

8. The patient support of claim 7, wherein the controller receives the caster indication signal from the caster mode detector and provides a control signal to the rolling support lifter in response to the caster indication signal.

9. A patient support, comprising:

a frame configured to support a person in at least a horizontal position,

a motor,

a wheel coupled to the motor and coupled to the frame to move the patient support from one location to another in response to output from the motor,

at least one load cell operable to receive a first input from a user and receive a second input from a user and provide at least one signal based on the first and second inputs,

a controller coupled to the at least one load cell to receive the at least one signal therefrom, the controller being operable to provide a control signal based on the at least one signal and command the motor to operate at a specific output based on the control signal,

a first handle coupled to the at least one load cell, and

a second handle coupled to the at least one load cell.

10. The patient support of claim 9, wherein the first and second handles are pivotable relative to the frame.

11. The patient support of claim 9, wherein the first and second handles are movable by a user in a first direction and the first and second handles are movable by a user in a second direction opposite the first direction.

12. The patient support of claim 9, comprising a strain gauge supported on at least one of the first and second handles.

13. The patient support of claim 9, comprising a power reservoir for storing energy for use by the motor, and a charge detector in communication with the power reservoir for detecting the amount of energy stored in the power reservoir and providing an energy signal indicative thereof.

14. The patient support of claim 13, comprising a shut down relay coupled intermediate the power reservoir and the motor and configured to receive the energy signal, wherein the relay disconnects the power reservoir from the motor when the energy signal indicates that the energy stored within the power reservoir is less than a predetermined amount.

15. The patient support of claim 9, comprising at least one battery for storing energy for use by the motor, a detector in communication with the at least one battery for detecting the amount of energy stored in the at least one battery and providing a battery signal indicative thereof, and a relay coupled intermediate the at least one battery and the motor to receive the battery signal, wherein the relay disconnects the at least one battery from the motor when the battery signal indicates that the energy stored within the at least one battery is less than a predetermined amount.

16. A patient support comprising:

a frame configured to support a person in at least a horizontal position,

a plurality of casters supporting the frame,

a wheel configured to propel the frame,

at least one load cell coupled to the frame, the at least one load cell being operable to receive a force and provide a signal based on the force, and

a motor operably coupled to the at least one load cell, the motor being operable to drive the wheel in response to the signal,

wherein the at least one load cell provides a signal in response to a first state in which a first force is received, the at least one load cell provides a signal in response to a second state in which a second force is received, and in the first state, the signal causes the frame to move in a first direction, and in the second state, the signal causes the frame to move in a second direction different than the first direction.

17. The patient support of claim 16, comprising a user enable device configured to generate an enable signal to initiate operation of the motor.

18. The patient support of claim 16, comprising a power supply coupled to the motor and a braking system coupled to the power supply, wherein the braking system is configured to detect the power available to drive the motor and to provide braking based upon the power detected.

19. The patient support of claim 16, wherein in the first state, the signal causes the motor to rotate the shaft at a first speed and in the second state, the signal causes the motor to rotate the shaft at a second speed different than the first speed.

20. The patient support of claim 16, comprising a user input device operable to receive a user force corresponding to a desired speed of the motor, receive a feedback force corresponding to an actual speed of the motor, and generate a signal based on a difference between the first user force and the first feedback force.
