1. A pumping apparatus and pump set for use to deliver a supply of liquid to a patient, the pump set comprising a conduit for the liquid and a safety interlock device associated with the conduit, the pumping apparatus comprising:

  • a pumping device operable to act on the pump set to drive flow of the liquid in the pump set;

    a control system for controlling operation of the pumping device;

    at least two electromagnetic radiation detecting sensors operatively connected to the control system of the pumping apparatus, a first of said sensors being positioned on the pumping apparatus for identifying the safety interlock device in a loaded position of the device and configured to send a signal to the control system indicating the safety interlock device is properly loaded on the pumping apparatus, and a second of said sensors being positioned on the pumping apparatus for detecting a fault condition associated with the positioning of the safety interlock device and configured to send a signal to the control system indicating the safety interlock device is not properly loaded on the pumping apparatus, the first sensor being configured to indicate that the safety interlock is properly loaded on the pumping apparatus only when electromagnetic radiation is detected by the first sensor and the second sensor being configured to indicate that the safety interlock is not properly loaded on the pumping device only when electromagnetic radiation is detected by the second sensor;

    wherein said safety interlock device transmits infrared radiation through the safety interlock device and blocks visible light.
