Abstract

A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. The screen is illuminated with light from a light source comprising an array of controllable light-emitters. The controllable-emitters and elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

Claims

1. A method for operating a display comprising a spatially-modulatable backlight having a plurality of individually-controllable light sources illuminating a spatial light modulator having a plurality of individually-controllable light modulating elements, the method comprising:

controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight to display an approximation of an image;

refreshing the spatial light modulator by sequentially refreshing a plurality of sections of the spatial light modulator, each section comprising at least one of the plurality of the individually-controllable light modulating elements;

while refreshing one of the sections of the spatial light modulator, reducing an instantaneous brightness of the light emitted by a group of one or more of the individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight, the group corresponding to the one section, to less than a brightness of the approximation of the image at an image area corresponding to the section; and

,

overdriving the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight at a time when the one section of the spatial light modulator is not being refreshed to increase the instantaneous brightness of the light emitted by the group of individually-controllable light sources to more than the brightness of the approximation of the image at the image area corresponding to the section.

A method according to claim 1 comprising overdriving the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight in alternation with reducing the instantaneous brightness of the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight.

A method according to claim 1 comprising overdriving the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight by an amount selected to compensate for the reduction in instantaneous brightness of the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight while the one section of the spatial light modulator is being refreshed, such that a viewer perceives a desired brightness.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein reducing the instantaneous brightness of the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises dimming the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein reducing the instantaneous brightness of the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises turning off the group of individually-controllable light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one section comprises a row of elements of the spatial light modulator and the group of individually-controllable light sources that corresponds to the one section comprises a row in an array of the individually-controllable light sources.

7. A method according to claim 1 comprising time multiplexing the operation of the individually-controllable light sources and synchronizing the time multiplexing to the refreshing of the spatial light modulator.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a liquid crystal display panel and the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises an array of light-emitting diodes.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein refreshing the section of the spatial light modulator comprises controlling colored sub-pixels of the spatial light modulator.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight is performed at a first resolution and controlling the spatial light modulator is performed at a second resolution higher than the first resolution.

11. A method according to claim 10 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises determining a value for pixels of the spatially-modulatable backlight based on image data.

12. A method according to claim 11 wherein controlling the spatial light modulator comprises reducing artefacts resulting from each pixel of the spatially-modulatable backlight being common to a plurality of pixels of the spatial light modulator.

13. A method according to claim 11 wherein controlling the spatial light modulator comprises setting pixels of the spatial light modulator to cause the displayed image to approach a desired image.

14. A method according to claim 10 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight to emit light that is diffuse and provides a light intensity that varies smoothly across the spatial light modulator.

15. A method according to claim 9 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises causing the spatially-modulatable backlight to emit white light having an intensity that varies with location on the spatially-modulatable backlight.

16. A method according to claim 1 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight comprises controlling each of the light sources based in part on calibration information for the light source.

17. A method according to claim 1 wherein refreshing the section of the spatial light modulator comprises setting the at least one individually-controllable light modulating element of the section based on an intensity of light incident from the spatially-modulatable backlight on the section.

The method of claim 17 wherein setting the at least one individually-controllable light modulating element of the section based on the intensity of light incident from the spatially-modulatable backlight on the section comprises computing the intensity of light incident from the spatially-modulatable backlight on the section from a known way that light from the light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight is distributed on the spatial light modulator.

The method of claim 17 wherein setting the at least one individually-controllable light modulating element of the section based on the intensity of light incident from the spatially-modulatable backlight on the section comprises summing contributions from light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight to determine the intensity of light incident from the spatially-modulatable backlight on the section.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein controlling the spatially-modulatable backlight to display an approximation of the image comprises determining an average of the luminance values of the areas of the image corresponding to each light source of the spatially-modulatable backlight.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein setting values for the light sources of the spatially-modulatable backlight to provide an approximation of the image comprises determining a weighted average of the luminance values of the areas of the image corresponding to each light source of the spatially-modulatable backlight.

22. The method of claim 1 wherein the group corresponding to the one section comprises at least one light source configured to illuminate the one section and at least one other section of the spatial light modulator.
