1. A method of quantifying unread content items, comprising:
- at a server system distinct from a client system;
for a user-defined stream subscribed to by a user, wherein the user-defined stream comprises a time-ordered list of content items from two or more content feeds, wherein each content feed comprises a set of content items published by a respective publication source;
determining a count of content items in the user-defined stream having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the user-defined stream, wherein determining the count comprises excluding from the count, regardless of actual read status, items in the time-ordered list in accordance with a first predefined depth limit and a first predefined age limit; and
transmitting the count of content items in the user-defined stream having the unread status to the client system for display.
