1. An encapsulated endoscope apparatus comprising:
- an encapsulated endoscope capable of moving by itself in a lumen of a body cavity and externally transmitting picked-up image data of the interior of the body cavity;
a magnetically inducing device for magnetically inducing the encapsulated endoscope to drive the encapsulated endoscope in a desired direction;
an extracorporeal unit comprising;
an image data receiving section for receiving the image data from the encapsulated endoscope, anda lumen direction detecting section for detecting a direction of the lumen of the body cavity from the received image data, andan advancement status determining section for constantly detecting a change of the received image data with respect to time, and if there is no change of the received image data with respect to time, determining that the encapsulated endoscope has failed to advance further in the lumen,wherein the magnetically inducing devicedetermines an insertion direction of the encapsulated endoscope based on a detection result of the lumen direction detecting section, and magneticallymagnetically induces the encapsulated endoscope based on the determined insertion direction of the encapsulated endoscope and the determination result of the advancement status determining section.

Abstract
An encapsulated endoscope system in accordance with the present invention comprises: an encapsulated endoscope that rotates to develop a thrust; a controller that moves the encapsulated endoscope in an intended direction of advancement; an imaging unit incorporated in the encapsulated endoscope; and an image processing unit that receives image data sent from the imaging unit, and produces an image, which results from rotation of the received image data, according to the rotational phase of the encapsulated endoscope.

7. A method for controlling an encapsulated endoscope adapted to move by itself in a lumen of a body cavity, the method comprising:

an encapsulated endoscope magnetic inducing step of magnetically inducing the encapsulated endoscope to drive the encapsulated endoscope in a desired direction; a picked-up image data transmitting step of externally transmitting picked-up image data of the interior of the body cavity from the encapsulated endoscope; a picked-up image data receiving step of receiving the image data transmitted from the encapsulated endoscope; a lumen direction detecting step of detecting a direction of the lumen of the body cavity from the received image data; and an advancement status determining step of constantly detecting a change of the received image data with respect to time, and if there is no change of the received image data with respect to time, determining that the encapsulated endoscope has failed to advance further in the lumen an insertion direction determining step of determining an insertion direction of the encapsulated endoscope based on a detection result of the lumen direction detecting step, wherein in the encapsulated endoscope magnetic inducing step, the encapsulated endoscope is magnetically induced based on the determined insertion direction of the encapsulated endoscope and the determination result of the advancement status determining step.

an encapsulated endoscope magnetic inducing step of magnetically inducing the encapsulated endoscope to drive the encapsulated endoscope in a desired direction; a picked-up image data transmitting step of externally transmitting picked-up image data of the interior of the body cavity from the encapsulated endoscope; a picked-up image data receiving step of receiving the image data transmitted from the encapsulated endoscope; a lumen direction detecting step of detecting a direction of change from light to dark portions in the received image data, and detecting a direction of the lumen of the body cavity based on a detection result of the direction of change; an insertion direction determining step of determining an insertion direction of the encapsulated endoscope based on a detected direction of the lumen; and an advancement status determining step of constantly detecting a change of the received image data with respect to time, and if there is no change of the received image data with respect to time, determining that the encapsulated endoscope has failed to advance further in the lumen, wherein in the encapsulated endoscope magnetic inducing step, the encapsulated endoscope is magnetically induced based on a determination result of the advancement status determining step.
