Abstract

Material transport catheters and methods for their use rely on rotation of an impeller within a catheter body and a clearing element for preventing buildup of materials at the opening of the catheter body. The impeller preferably comprises an inner tube or shaft having a helical rotor formed over an outer surface thereof. The clearing element may comprise a free end of a structure near the distal end of the catheter body for disrupting clot, wherein the free end of the structure extends into the distal opening of the catheter body to break up materials as the impeller is rotated. Alternatively, the clearing element may comprise a cutting member disposed at the distal opening of the catheter body.

Claims

1. A catheter comprising:

an elongate catheter body having an internal lumen extending within the catheter body;

an elongate tubular shaft extending within the catheter body lumen, the tubular shaft having an internal lumen extending within the tubular shaft, the shaft having an interior surface surrounding the shaft lumen;

an impeller comprising a helical rotor element located on the interior surface of the shaft, such that rotation of the tubular shaft within the catheter body tends to transport material via the helical rotor element along and within the shaft lumen; and

a macerator disposed at a distal end of the catheter body.

2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the macerator is coupled to the elongate tubular shaft such that rotation of the elongate tubular shaft causes rotation of the macerator relative to the catheter body.

3. The catheter of claim 2, further comprising an expansible cage surrounding the macerator.

4. The catheter of claim 3, wherein the macerator is configured to engage at least a portion of an inner surface of the expansible cage.

The catheter of claim 1, further comprising an additional helical rotor element located on an exterior surface of the tubular shaft such that rotation of the tubular shaft within the catheter body tends to transport material via the additional helical rotor element along and within the internal flow lumen of the catheter body.

6. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the helical rotor element and the additional helical rotor element are oriented to flow material in different directions.
