Abstract

A new credit card system which enables improved reading and other operations. Reading can be done in the short edge of the credit card thereby shortening the aspect ratio and size of the card reader. The reader can be electrical, reading information via contacts, or can be optical readers.

Claims

1. An assembly comprising:

a housing, having electronic circuits therein;

a first electronic circuit mounted within the housing, said first electronic circuit storing electronic information indicative of a credit card number, and storing information indicative of at least one encryption key and also storing authorization information for operations of the credit card;

a user interface, that allows changing said authorization information stored in said first electronic circuit; and

a communication device, that carries out electronic communication using said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, said electronic communication using said information indicative of at least one encryption key and using said authorization information, said communication device including sending said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, and sending said authorization information using said information indicative of at least one encryption key as part of a request for authorization of a credit card transaction, wherein said authorization information comprises authorization for a limited time, and defines operations defined by said authorization information only during said limited time.

2. An assembly as in claim 1, wherein said communication device in said housing communicates wirelessly.

3. An assembly as in claim 2, wherein said communication device in said housing begins communicating automatically upon receiving information indicative of a wireless connection.

4. An assembly as in claim 1, wherein said user interface requires that a user of the assembly enter specified information in order to change said authorization, and changes said authorization only if said user enters said specified information.

5. An assembly as in claim 4, wherein said specified information is a specified personal identification number in order to change said authorization.

6. An assembly comprising:

a housing, having electronic circuits therein;

a first electronic circuit mounted within the housing, said first electronic circuit storing electronic information indicative of a credit card number, and storing information indicative of at least one encryption key and also storing authorization information for operations of the credit card;

a user interface, that allows changing said authorization information stored in said first electronic circuit; and

a communication device, that carries out electronic communication using said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, said electronic communication using said information indicative of at least one encryption key and using said authorization information, said communication device including sending said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, and sending said authorization information using said information indicative of at least one encryption key as part of a request for authorization of a credit card transaction, wherein said changing said authorization information comprises changing an amount of spending which is allowed to be used on the assembly within a predetermined time.

7. An assembly comprising:

a housing, having electronic circuits therein;

a first electronic circuit mounted within the housing, said first electronic circuit storing electronic information indicative of a credit card number, and storing information indicative of at least one encryption key and also storing authorization information for operations of the credit card;

a user interface, that allows changing said authorization information stored in said first electronic circuit; and

a communication device, that carries out electronic communication using said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, said electronic communication using said information indicative of at least one encryption key and using said authorization information, said communication device including sending said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, and sending said authorization information using said information indicative of at least one encryption key as part of a request for authorization of a credit card transaction, further comprising at least one speed code, associated with the user interface, where said speed code is selected to automatically set a specified amount as said authorization information and a specified time during which said authorization information is valid.

8. An assembly An assembly comprising:

a housing, having electronic circuits therein;

a first electronic circuit mounted within the housing, said first electronic circuit storing electronic information indicative of a credit card number, and storing information indicative of at least one encryption key and also storing authorization information for operations of the credit card;

a user interface, that allows changing said authorization information stored in said first electronic circuit; and

a communication device, that carries out electronic communication using said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, said electronic communication using said information indicative of at least one encryption key and using said authorization information, said communication device including sending said electronic information indicative of the credit card number, and sending said authorization information using said information indicative of at least one encryption key as part of a request for authorization of a credit card transaction, wherein said assembly includes a first power source used for transactions, and a second power source used for setting said authorization information.

9. An assembly as in claim 8, wherein said first power source comprises power received over a connection between said assembly and a device which is communicating with said assembly.

10. An assembly as in claim 8 wherein said second power source comprises a connection to an external source of power.

11. A credit card assembly comprising:

a housing, having electronic circuits therein;

a first electronic circuit, mounted within the housing, that stores electronic information indicative of a credit card number, and also stores authorization information for operations of the credit card assembly and allows changing said authorization information to set different amounts of authorization that are allowed; and

a communication device, that carries out a request for validation of an electronic credit card transaction by sending said electronic information indicative of the credit card number and said authorization information as changed by a user, wherein said authorization information comprises authorization for a limited time, and only allows operations defined by said authorization information to be carried out only during said limited time.

12. A credit card assembly as in claim 11, wherein said communication device in said housing communicates wirelessly.

13. A credit card assembly as in claim 12, wherein said communication device in said housing begins communicating automatically upon detecting a wireless connection.

A credit card assembly as in claim 11, further comprising a user interface associated with said housing, and wherein said authorization information requires that a user of the credit card assembly enter specified information on said user interface in order to change said authorization information.

15. A credit card assembly as in claim 14, wherein said authorization information requires that the user of the credit card assembly enter a specified personal identification number on said user interface in order to change said authorization.
