Abstract

Avatars, methods, apparatuses, computer program products, devices and systems are described that carry out presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content; measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content; associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state; and identifying at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content;

circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content;

circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state, including circuitry for identifying at least one preferred instance of media content based on the at least one mental state; and

circuitry for identifying at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population a plurality of avatars, each avatar associated with at least one of an instance of movie content, an instance of television content, an instance of music content, an instance of literature content, an instance of internet content, an instance of news content, or an instance of advertising content.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population a plurality of substantially similar avatars, each avatar associated with a substantially different instance of media content.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population a plurality of substantially distinct avatars, each avatar associated with a substantially similar instance of media content.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a family group the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population cohort the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to at least one member of at least one of an age cohort, a gender cohort, an ethnicity cohort, or a purchasing cohort the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population the plurality of avatars, each avatar associated with at least one of an image instance of media content, an audio instance of media content, a video instance of media content, or an animation instance of media content.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population a plurality of avatars in sequence, each avatar associated with at least one instance of media content.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for presenting to the at least one member of the population the plurality of avatars, each avatar associated with at least one of an image instance of media content, an audio instance of media content, a video instance of media content, or an animation instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for presenting to at least one of a virtual world participant, a computer game participant, an online shopping participant, or a social networking website participant a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population using functional near-infrared imaging, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population using at least one of electroencephalography, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging, functional near-infrared imaging, or magnetoencephalography, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one brain activity surrogate marker of the at least one member of the population, the at least one brain activity surrogate marker proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

The system of claim 13 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one brain activity surrogate marker of the at least one member of the population, the at least one brain activity surrogate marker proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one brain activity surrogate marker of the at least one member of the population using at least one of iris dilation or constriction, gaze tracking, skin response, or voice response, the at least one brain activity surrogate marker proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population in near real time, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring at least one brain activity and at least one eye movement activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one brain activity and the at least one eye movement proximate to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring the at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity responsive to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content relevant to the population.

The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring the at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity responsive to at least one avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content relevant to a population cohort.

The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content comprises:

circuitry for measuring with permission the at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity responsive to the at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one electrical brain activity with the at least one mental state.

21. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one brain blood oxygen level with the at least one mental state.

22. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one of glucose metabolism or blood flow with the at least one mental state.

23. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex with a mental state indicating approval.

24. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in at least one of the frontopolar cortex, the prefrontal cortex, the ventral striatum, the orbitofrontal prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, or the nucleus accumbens with a mental state indicating approval.

25. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the prefrontal cortex with a mental state indicating brand preference.

26. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the posterior parietal cortex, the occipital cortex, and the left premotor area with a mental state indicating brand preference.

27. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in at least one of the inferior precuneus, posterior cingulate, right parietal cortex, right superior frontal gyrus, right supramarginal gyrus, or the ventromedial prefrontal cortex with a mental state indicating brand preference.

28. The system of claim 1 wherein the associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in at least one of the insula, the lateral orbital frontal cortex, or the amygdala with a mental state indicating emotional disapproval.

29. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex with a mental state indicating objective approval.

30. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the caudate nucleus with a mental state indicating trust.

31. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the hippocampus with a mental state indicating novelty in a perceived object.

32. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating activity in the hippocampus with a mental state indicating lack of inhibition toward a perceived object.

33. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one brain activity surrogate marker with at least one mental state.

34. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one physiologic activity that is at or above a defined threshold with at least one mental state.

35. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for associating at least one pattern of physiologic activity with at least one mental state that is known to be associated with the pattern of physiologic activity.

36. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for identifying at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for identifying at least one of an instance of movie content, an instance of television content, an instance of music content, an instance of literature content, an instance of internet content, or an instance of advertising content based on the at least one mental state.

37. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for identifying at least one instance of advertising content based on at least one approving mental state relative to that of a competitor'"'"'s advertising content.

38. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state comprises:

circuitry for identifying the at least one instance of a product design based on at least one approving mental state relative to that of at least one alternative product design.

39. A computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory signal-bearing medium bearing

(a) one or more instructions for presenting to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content;

(b) one or more instructions for measuring at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one presented avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content;

(c) one or more instructions for associating the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state, including one or more instructions for identifying at least one preferred instance of media content based on the at least one mental state; and

(d) one or more instructions for identifying at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state.

40. The computer program product of claim 39, wherein the signal-bearing medium includes a computer-readable medium.

41. The computer program product of claim 39, wherein the signal-bearing medium includes a recordable medium.

42. The computer program product of claim 39, wherein the signal-bearing medium includes a communications medium.

43. A system comprising:

a computing device; and

instructions that when executed on the computing device cause the computing device to

(a) present to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars, each avatar associated with at least one instance of media content;

(b) measure at least one physiologic activity of the at least one member of the population, the at least one physiologic activity proximate to at least one avatar among the plurality of avatars associated with at least one instance of media content;

(c) associate the at least one physiologic activity with at least one mental state, including identifying at least one preferred instance of media content based on the at least one mental state; and

(c) identify at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state.

44. The system of claim 43 wherein the computing device comprises:

one or more of a personal digital assistant (PDA), a personal entertainment device, a mobile phone, a laptop computer, a tablet personal computer, a networked computer, a computing system comprised of a cluster of processors, a computing system comprised of a cluster of servers, a workstation computer, and/or a desktop computer.

45. The system of claim 43 wherein the computing device is operable to present to at least one member of a population a plurality of avatars, each avatar associated with at least one instance of media content from at least one memory.

46. The system of claim 43 wherein the computing device is operable to identify from at least one memory the at least one instance of media content based on the at least one mental state.
