Devices and methods for treatment of obesity
First Claim
1. A system for treatment of obesity, said system comprising:
- an expandable main body member configured to be positioned adjacent a portion of a stomach of a patient, outside of the stomach, within the abdominal cavity of the patient;
an anchor directly attached to the expandable main body member configured to fix a portion of said main body member to and in contact with a portion of at least one internal body structure, without piercing through a wall of the stomach;
a removable, elongate delivery instrument having a handle to guide the expandable main body member through an opening in the skin of the patient to a target location within the abdominal cavity, outside of the stomach of the patient, then be removed, said handle being provided at a distal end portion of said elongate delivery instrument, said elongated delivery instrument further including an elongate member extending proximally from said handle, and wherein at least a portion of said handle extends transversely to a longitudinal axis of said elongate member, such that a cross-sectional dimension of said handle in a plane normal to said longitudinal axis is greater than a cross-sectional dimension of said elongate member in said plane normal to said longitudinal axis;
an adjustment member having a port that is accessible by an instrument to effect expansion or contraction of said main body, said adjustment member configured to be anchored to an abdominal wall or subcutaneously external to the abdominal wall; and
a conduit connecting said main body with said adjustment member, wherein said expandable main body member is configured to be implanted without piercing through the stomach wall.

Abstract
Implantable devices, instruments, kits and methods for treatment of obesity. One or more devices can be implanted adjacent to or in contact with the stomach to occupy a space to prevent the stomach from expanding into that space as food is taken into the stomach. Alternatively, one or more devices may be implanted and expanded to displace at least a portion of the wall of the stomach to decrease the internal volume of the stomach that is available to receive food. Devices may be anchored to one or more internal structures at one or more locations without piercing through the wall of the stomach. Devices can be implanted using minimally invasive methods, such as percutaneous or laparoscopic methods. Delivery instruments are also provided. An intra-gastric sizing device is provided to facilitate implantation of an extra-gastric device in some method embodiments.

28. A system for treatment of obesity, said system comprising:
-
an expandable main body member configured to be positioned adjacent a portion of a stomach of a patient, within the abdominal cavity of the patient; an adjustment member having a port that is accessible by an instrument to effect expansion or contraction of said main body, said adjustment member located in the expandable main body member; and a removable conduit having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, said distal end portion having an expandable tip insertable within said expandable main body member, wherein, when in an expanded configuration, said expandable tip is prevented from removal from said expandable main body member, and wherein, when in a collapsed configuration, said expandable tip is removable from said expandable main body member, and wherein said proximal end portion is configured to be connected in fluid communication with said adjustment member. - View Dependent Claims (29)
