Abstract

The present invention is a Miniature Vein Enhancer that includes a Miniature Projection Head. The Miniature Projection Head may be operated in one of three modes, AFM, DBM, and RTM. The Miniature Projection Head of the present invention projects an image of the veins of a patient, which aids the practitioner in pinpointing a vein for an intravenous drip, blood test, and the like. The Miniature projection head may have a cavity for a power source or it may have a power source located in a body portion of the Miniature Vein Enhancer. The Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to one of several improved needle protectors, or the Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to a body similar to a flashlight for hand held use. The Miniature Vein Enhancer of the present invention may also be attached to a magnifying glass, a flat panel display, and the like.

Claims

1. A miniature vein enhancer, for use with a tool as part of a handheld venipuncture procedure said miniature vein enhancer enhancing a target area on a patient, said miniature vein enhancer comprising:

a mast member, said mast member having a first end and a second end;

a miniature projection head at said first end of said mast member, said miniature projection head comprising a first laser to image said target area and a second laser to selectively project an image along an optical path onto said target area; and

a base member, said base member being secured to said second end of said mast;

said base member comprising an opening for use in releasable mounting of said miniature vein enhancer to said tool for use in a handheld venipuncture procedure;

wherein said opening in said base member comprises first and second sides, said first and second sides being normally biased toward each other to accomplish said releasable mounting.

2. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said first and second sides connect to form an annular ring.

3. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said base member of said miniature vein enhancer being secured to said mast is by said base member being rigidly fixed to said mast.

4. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said base member of said miniature vein enhancer being secured to said mast is by said base member being adjustably secured to said mast.

5. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 4 wherein said base member being adjustably secured to said mast is by a hinge;

and wherein said mast is flexible.

6. A miniature vein enhancer according claim 1 wherein said first and second sides being normally biased toward each other serve to create a tight friction fit.

7. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said imaging by said first laser comprises:

said first laser transmitting light at a first wavelength;

a [MEMS] scanner for causing said laser light from said first laser to be transmitted in a raster pattern onto said target area; and

a photodectector responsive to said first wavelength of said laser light of said first laser, said photodectector receiving laser light reflected off said target area being in the form of a contrasted image, said contrasted image being formed by at least a selective portion of said laser light of said first laser being reflected, and a remaining portion of said laser light from said first laser being absorbed by veins;

said photodetector outputting an analog signal representing said contrasted image.

8. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 7 wherein said laser light transmitted by said first laser at said first wavelength is within the infrared spectrum of light;

and wherein said second laser transmits light at a second wavelength being within the visible spectrum of light.

9. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 8 further comprising a combiner, said combiner combining said first wavelength of light from said first laser and said second wavelength of laser light from said second laser;

and wherein said combiner transmits said combined laser light along a single optical path onto said target area.

10. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 9 wherein said transmission of said first wavelength of laser light producing said analog signal representing said contrasted image occurs continuously;

and wherein said analog signal from said photodetector is transmitted to a laser driver that causes said second laser to project said contrasted image at said second wavelength of light, said projection occurring continuously.

11. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 10 wherein said continuous projection occurs nearly simultaneous with said contrasted image being received;

and wherein a delay causing said nearly simultaneous receipt and projection is only a limit of speed of said photodetector and speed of said laser driver.

12. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 9 further comprising:

a memory;

an analog-to-digital converter for converting said analog signal from said photodetector into a digital signal, and wherein said digital signal comprises a grid of pixels representing a complete raster field of view of said target area to form a current frame;

said grid of pixels for each frame being stored in said memory;

a positioning sensor;

said positioning sensor determining the exact instantaneous location of said [MEMS] scanner relative to said target area and communicating said instantaneous location to said memory, said instantaneous location being stored within a pixel memory location for each pixel of said grid of each frame.

13. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 12 further comprising an alternating frame projection mode for said image projection, said alternating frame projection mode comprising:

a digital-to-analog converter for converting said stored digital frame into an analog frame; and

alternating occurrences between transmission of said first wavelength of laser light resulting in said stored digital frame in said memory, and transmission of said second wavelength to project each converted digital-to-analog frame onto said target area.

14. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 13 wherein said grid of pixels comprises a grid of 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels.

15. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 14 wherein said miniature projection head further comprises a display screen;

and wherein each of said converted analog frames being projected onto said target area is also projected onto said display screen.

16. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 15 wherein said full 1000 pixel by 1000 pixel grid is projected onto said display screen to provide a non-magnified image.

17. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 16 wherein said stored digital image comprises a predetermined number of pixels centered on a tip of a needle;

and wherein said tip of said needle is centered in said display screen image.

18. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 17 wherein said predetermined number of pixels around said tip comprises a 300 by 300 pixel grid.

19. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 18 further comprising image processing capabilities;

and wherein said image processing capabilities permit magnification of said display screen image, said magnification of said display screen image being algorithmically adjustable by a processor responsive to inputs made by a practitioner.

20. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 19 wherein only said 300 by 300 pixel grid centered on said needle tip is projected onto said display screen to result in said display screen image of said veins and said needle tip being magnified more than three times.

The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 20 wherein when a vein is selected for puncture by said practitioner with said needle, said practitioner brings said needle towards said selected vein while viewing said projected image on said target area until said needle tip is proximate to said selected vein, wherein said practitioner thereafter looks at said magnified display screen image to more accurately puncture a center of said selected vein.

22. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 21 wherein said display screen is from the group of display screens consisting of:

a flat panel display screen; and

a translucent rear projection screen.

23. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 22 wherein said flat panel display screen comprises a touch screen.

24. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 23 wherein said image processing capabilities further comprise adjustability to one or more of:

screen brightness, contrast, and projection angle.

25. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 12 comprising a dual buffer projection mode;

said dual buffer projection mode comprising;

a second memory;

a digital-to-analog converter for converting a stored digital frame into an analog frame; and

transmission of said second wavelength of laser light to project said converted analog frame onto said target area being delayed with respect to transmission of said first wavelength of laser light resulting in said stored digital frame in said memory, but with said light transmission by said first laser and said light transmission by said second laser occurring simultaneously; and

wherein a first frame stored in said first memory is moved into said second memory while another transmission from said first laser results in a second frame being stored in said first memory, and wherein said dual buffer projection mode thereafter repetitively comprises;

simultaneous projection of said converted analog frame from said second memory at said second wavelength, along with movement of said frame stored in said first memory into said second memory, and with a successive transmission from said first laser resulting in a subsequent stored frame in said first memory.

26. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 25 wherein a rate of said projection of said converted analog frames occurs at approximately 30 frames per second to minimize effects of said delay.

27. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 26 wherein said [MEMS] scanner comprises a MEMS scanner selected from the group scanners consisting of:

a two-dimensional mirror capable of oscillations in two axes; and

one high speed scanning mirror capable of moving along a first axis and being angled to reflect said transmitted laser light to a second lower speed mirror capable of moving along a second axis.

28. The miniature vein enhancer according to claim 27 wherein said first laser transmits light at a wavelength of 740 nm, and said second laser transmits light at a wavelength of 630 nm.

29. A miniature vein enhancer, for use with a vial as part of a handheld venipuncture procedure to enhance a target area on a patient, said miniature vein enhancer comprising:

a mast member;

a miniature projection head fixed to a first end of said mast member, said miniature projection head comprising a first laser to image said target area and a second laser to selectively project an image along an optical path onto said target area; and

a base member, said base member being secured to a second end of said mast;

said base member comprising an orifice for use in releasable mounting of said miniature vein enhancer to a vial.

30. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 29 wherein at least first and second sides of said orifice of said base member are normally biased toward each other to accomplish said releasable mounting.

31. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 30 wherein said base member of said miniature vein enhancer being secured to said mast is by said base member being rigidly fixed to said mast;

and wherein said mast is flexible.

32. A miniature vein enhancer according to claim 31 wherein said base member of said miniature vein enhancer being secured to said mast is by said base member being adjustably secured to said mast using a hinge.
