Abstract

An implantable tissue growth stimulator is disclosed. The implantable tissue growth stimulator includes electronic circuitry to alter the voltage output by the stimulator. The implantable tissue growth stimulator may be controlled from an external device via wireless communication. The implantable tissue growth stimulator may be configured for use with an implant. In particular, the implantable tissue growth stimulator may be incorporated into an orthopaedic device such as a hip prosthesis. The implantable tissue growth stimulator may be used to stimulate bone growth.

Claims

1. A method of providing bone growth stimulation within a body, comprising:

providing an orthopaedic device comprised of at least two components such that the at least two components form a joint;

providing a bone growth stimulator separate from the orthopaedic device, the bone growth stimulator including a plurality of electrical conductors adapted to provide electrical stimulation to a bone and a malleable sheath having a first surface for engaging and conforming to one of the at least two components of the orthopaedic device and a second surface for engaging and conforming to the bone, the sheath adapted for at least partially maintaining the position of the plurality of electrical conductors;

inserting the bone growth stimulator into the body adjacent a bone;

operating the bone growth stimulator to provide electrical stimulation to the bone;

wherein providing the orthopaedic device includes;

providing a total hip joint prosthesis comprising an acetabular component and a femoral component, the acetabular component having a convex exterior surface and an opposing concave interior surface, the femoral component having a femoral head and a femoral stem; and

further comprising;

engaging the bone growth stimulator to the acetabular component prior to said inserting.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising engaging the bone growth stimulator to an orthopaedic device prior to said inserting.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said operating includes providing electrical stimulation at a plurality of voltages.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheath is resorbable.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the bone growth stimulator is controllable by an external device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the femoral head is sized and shaped for movable engagement with the internal concave surface of the acetabular component to form the joint, the joint being a ball-in-socket joint.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein engaging the bone growth stimulator includes positioning the sheath over the convex exterior surface of the acetabular component.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheath is made substantially of an insulating material.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein inserting the bone growth stimulator into the body adjacent the bone includes inserting the bone growth stimulator prior to inserting the orthopaedic device into the body adjacent the bone.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the orthopaedic device into the body and engaging the first surface of the sheath with the orthopaedic device after said inserting.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the sheath has an insulating layer, the insulating layer shielding the orthopaedic device from the electrical stimulation provided by the plurality of electrical conductors.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of electrical conductors are adapted for providing electrical stimulation over a range of voltages between 0.5 V to 10 V.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein each of the electrical conductors of the plurality of electrical conductors is adapted to provide electrical stimulation for at least one voltage level in the range of voltages.

14. The bone growth stimulator of claim 1, wherein each of the electrical conductors of the plurality of electrical conductors is adapted to provide electrical stimulation at a voltage different from at least one other electrical conductor.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing an external device adapted for defining a parameter controlled by the bone growth stimulator.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the bone growth stimulator further comprises an internal controller adapted for controlling a parameter of the electrical stimulation provided by the plurality of electrical conductors.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the internal controller is adapted for communication with the external device.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising powering the internal controller and plurality of electrical conductors from the external device.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the plurality of electrical conductors are adapted to provide electrical stimulation only when the external device provides power to the plurality of electrical conductors.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising controlling a parameter of the electrical stimulation provided by the plurality of electrical conductors via the external device communicating with the internal controller.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the parameter is voltage.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the parameter is length of time.
