Abstract

A data-encoding system includes a source of unencoded data, and a first encoder interoperably coupled to the source, wherein the first encoder is adapted to receive the unencoded data, encode the unencoded data, and output encoded data at a first data rate. The data encoding system further includes a second encoder interoperably coupled to the source, wherein the second encoder is adapted to receive the unencoded data, encode the unencoded data, and output encoded data at a second data rate in which the second data rate exceeds the first data rate. Claims

1. A data-encoding system comprising:

a first encoder interoperably coupled to a source of data;

wherein the first encoder receives the data, encodes the data at a first data rate, and outputs the data encoded at the first data rate;

a second encoder interoperably coupled to the source;

wherein the second encoder receives the data, encodes the data at a second data rate, and outputs the data encoded at the second data rate;

a second data storage interoperably coupled to the second encoder and that stores the data encoded at the second data rate;

a first data storage interoperably coupled to the second data storage and that stores a user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, and

wherein the second data rate exceeds the first data rate.

2. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein the first data storage device stores the data encoded at the first data rate.

3. The data-encoding system of claim 2, wherein the first data storage device and the second data storage device are identical.

4. The data-encoding system of claim 3, further comprising a third data storage that receives the user-selected portion of the data encoded at the second data rate from the second data storage and stores the received user-selected portion of the data encoded at the second data rate.

5. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein:

the first data storage comprises removable data storage media; and

the second data storage comprises non-removable data storage media.

6. The data-encoding system of claim 5, wherein:

the second data storage is a hard drive; and

the removable data storage media is selected from the group consisting of a digital video disc and a compact disc.

7. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein the second data storage cyclically overwrites previously-stored data encoded at the second data rate responsive to receipt of new data encoded at the second data rate.

8. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein the data is video data.

9. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein selection by the user of the user-selected portion of data encoded at the second rate is responsive to an event.

10. The data-encoding system of claim 9, wherein the selection by the user is based at least in part upon an importance of the event.

11. The data-encoding system of claim 1, wherein the second data storage is interoperably coupled to the first encoder and stores the data encoded at the first data rate.

12. A data-encoding method comprising:

encoding data at a first data rate;

outputting the data encoded at the first data rate;

encoding the data at a second data rate;

wherein the encoding steps are performed at least in part simultaneously;

outputting the data encoded at the second data rate to a second data storage;

storing the data encoded at the second data rate in the second data storage;

receiving, at a first data storage from the second data storage, a user-selected portion of the stored encoded data;

storing the user-selected portion in the first data storage; and

wherein the second data rate exceeds the first data rate.

13. The data-encoding method of claim 12, further comprising:

the first data storage device storing the data encoded at the first data rate.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first data storage device and the second data storage device are identical.

15. The data-encoding method of claim 14, further comprising a third data storage receiving the user-selected portion of the data encoded at the second data rate from the second data storage and storing the received user-selected portion of the data encoded at the second data rate.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the first data storage comprises removable data storage media; and

the second data storage comprises non-removable data storage media.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein:

the second data storage is a hard drive; and

the removable data storage media is selected from the group consisting of a digital video disc and a compact disc.

18. The data-encoding method of claim 12, wherein the unencoded data is video data.

19. The method of claim 12, comprising receiving a selection of the user-selected portion.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the selection occurs responsive to an event.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the selection is based at least in part upon an importance of the event.

22. The method of claim 12, comprising:

receiving, by the second data storage, the outputted data encoded at the first data rate; and

storing, by the second data storage, the received data encoded at the first data rate.

23. A data-encoding system comprising:

a first encoder interoperably coupled to a source of data;

wherein the first encoder receives the data, encodes the data at a first data rate, and outputs the data encoded at the first data rate;

a second encoder interoperably coupled to the source;

wherein the second encoder receives the data, encodes the data at a second data rate, and outputs the data encoded at the second data rate;

wherein the second rate exceeds the first rate; and

a data storage interoperably coupled to the first encoder and the second encoder and that;

stores the data encoded at the first data rate and the data encoded at the second data rate; and

responsive to user selection of a portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, deletes a non-user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate.

24. The data-encoding system of claim 23, comprising, responsive to user selection of a portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, thereby designating a user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, storing the user-selected portion of the data stored at the second data rate on a second data storage.

25. The data-encoding system of claim 24, wherein the second data storage comprises a removable data storage device.

26. The data-encoding system of claim 23, wherein the data encoded at the first data rate and the data encoded at the second data rate are transferred wirelessly to a second data storage.

27. The data-encoding system of claim 23, wherein the data encoded at the first data rate is transferred wirelessly to a second data storage.

28. The data-encoding system of claim 23, wherein the data encoded at the second data rate is transferred wirelessly to a second data storage.

29. The data-encoding system of claim 23, wherein a user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate is transferred wirelessly to a second data storage.

30. The data-encoding system of claim 23, wherein the non-user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate is all of the stored data encoded at the second data rate other than the user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate.

31. A data-encoding method comprising:

interoperably coupling a first encoder and a second encoder to a source of data;

the first encoder receiving the data, encoding the data at a first data rate, and outputting the data encoded at the first data rate;

the second encoder receiving the data, encoding the data at a second data rate, and outputting the data encoded at the second data rate;

wherein the second rate exceeds the first rate; and

interoperably coupling a data storage to the first encoder and the second encoder;

storing on the data storage the data encoded at the first data rate and the data encoded at the second data rate; and

responsive to user selection of a portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, deleting from the data storage a non-user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate.

32. The data-encoding method of claim 31, comprising, responsive to user selection of a portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, thereby designating a user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate, storing the user-selected portion of the data stored at the second data rate on a second data storage.

33. The data-encoding method of claim 32, wherein the second data storage comprises a removable data storage device.

34. The data-encoding method of claim 31, comprising transferring wirelessly the data encoded at the first data rate and the data encoded at the second data rate to a second data storage.

35. The data-encoding method of claim 31, comprising transferring wirelessly the data encoded at the first data rate to a second data storage.

36. The data-encoding method of claim 31, comprising transferring wirelessly the data encoded at the second data rate to a second data storage.

37. The data-encoding method of claim 31, comprising transferring wirelessly a user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate to a second data storage.

38. The data-encoding method of claim 31, wherein the non-user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate is all of the stored data encoded at the second data rate other than the user-selected portion of the stored data encoded at the second data rate.
