Abstract

An adaptor that mechanically and/or electrically adapts to and/or from an electrical connector that is integrated with an active cable at one end of an active optical cable, wherein the optical cable is configured to communicate over much of its length using one or more optical fibers. The cable may be an electrical to optical cable, and electrical to electrical cable, or one of many other potential configurations.

Claims

1. An adaptor comprising:

an optical transceiver electrical connector having physical and electrical characteristics that are defined by an optical transceiver standard;

an active cable electrical receptacle having at least some physical characteristics that are defined by the optical transceiver standard and electrical characteristics that are defined by an electrical connection standard that differs from the optical transceiver standard, the active cable electrical receptacle configured to electrically connect to an electrical connector of an active cable that communicates over much of its length using optics, the active cable electrical receptacle being in electrical communication with the optical transceiver electrical connector;

circuitry coupled between the optical transceiver electrical connector and the active cable electrical receptacle, the circuitry being configured to perform adaptation of a plurality of electrical signals communicated between the optical transceiver electrical connector and the active cable electrical receptacle; and

a power conditioner configured to regulate power between a power supply of the adaptor and a power supply of the active cable.

2. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver standard is an SFP standard.

3. An adaptor in accordance with claim 2, further comprising an EEPROM.

4. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver standard is an XFP standard.

5. An adaptor in accordance with claim 4, wherein the adaptor does not includes CDRs.

6. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver standard is an SFP standard.

7. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein:

the electrical receptacle comprises;

a ground contact;

a TX−

contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX−

contact;

a VccN contact;

a fault contact; and

and a VccF contact; and

the optical transceiver electrical connector includes an SFP electrical connector, comprising;

a ground contact;

a TX−

contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX−

contact;

a RX+ contact;

a Vcc contact;

a LOS contact;

a Rate Select contact;

a MODDEFO contact;

a MODDEF1 contact;

a MODDEF2 contact;

8. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein the active cable electrical receptacle comprises a plurality of contacts, the contacts comprising:

one or more ground contacts;

a TX−

contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX−

contact;

a RX+ contact;

a VccN contact;

a fault contact; and

a VccF contact; and

the optical transceiver electrical connector is implemented as an XFP edge connector and comprises;

a ground contact;

a TX−

contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX−

contact;

a RX+ contact;

a Vcc contact;

a RXLOS contact;

a MOD_NR contact;

a MOD_ABS contact;

a SDA contact;

a SCL contact;

a TX_DIS contact;

a MODDEFO contact;

an Interrupt/ contact;

a MOD_DESEL contact.

9. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, further comprising a XAUI SERDES, wherein:

the electrical receptacle comprises;

a ground contact;

a TX−

contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX−

contact;

a RX+ contact;

a VccN contact;

a fault contact; and

and a VccF contact; and

the optical transceiver electrical connector includes an X2 edge connector, comprising;

a ground contact;

a TX+ contact;

a RX+ contact;

a +5.0V contact;

a +3.3V contact;

an APS contact;

an APS SENSE contact;

an APS SET contact;

a PRTAD contact;

a MDC contact;

a MDIO contact;

a Mod Detect contact;

a TX ON/OFF contact;

a RESET contact;

a LAST contact; and

an APS contact.

10. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1 in combination with the active cable, the active cable comprising:

an optical fiber within the active cable; and

an opto-electrical transducer within the active cable and coupled to an end of the optical fiber such that when an optical signal is present on the optical fiber, the opto-electrical transducer receives the optical signal and converts the optical signal into an electrical signal;

wherein the active cable electrical connector is integrated with the active cable and coupled to the opto-electrical transducer such that when the optical signal is received by the opto-electrical transducer, the active cable electrical connector receives the electrical signal, wherein the active cable electrical connector is configured to physically and electrically interface with the active cable electrical receptacle of the adaptor such that when the active cable is connected to the active cable electrical receptacle and when the electrical signal is present on the active cable electrical connector, the electrical signal is provided to the active cable electrical receptacle of the adaptor and is communicated to the optical transceiver electrical connector of the adaptor.

11. An adaptor in accordance with claim 1, wherein the circuitry coupled between the first and second ends comprises:

a signal mapping component; and

a printed circuit board that extends from the first end to the second end of the adaptor and that is electrically connected to the active cable electrical receptacle by way of the signal mapping component, and the optical transceiver electrical connector comprising an edge connector of the printed circuit board.

An adaptor in accordance with claim 11, wherein the signal mapping component includes an array of contact elements, each of which is configured and arranged to electrically communicate with a corresponding element of the active cable electrical connector when the active cable electrical connector is connected to the active cable electrical receptacle, and each of the contact elements of the signal mapping component being electrically connected to the printed circuit board.

An adaptor in accordance with claim 11, wherein the printed circuit board includes a status line and a control line that are each in electrical communication with a microcontroller and with the signal mapping component, the microcontroller further being in electrical communication with the edge connector.

14. An adaptor in accordance with claim 11, further comprising a shell within which the signal mapping component, printed circuit board, optical transceiver electrical connector, and active cable electrical receptacle are each at least partially positioned.

15. An adaptor in accordance with claim 11, wherein the printed circuit board includes an Rx differential pair of lines and a Tx differential pair of lines that are electrically connected to the edge connector.

16. An adaptor in accordance with claim 15, wherein the Rx differential pair is electrically connected with an Rx clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit, and the Tx differential pair is electrically connected with a Tx CDR circuit.

17. An adaptor comprising:

a mechanism including an optical transceiver electrical connector having physical and electrical characteristics that are defined by an optical transceiver electrical connector standard;

an active cable electrical receptacle having physical and electrical characteristics that are defined by an electrical connection standard that differs from the optical transceiver electrical connector standard, the active cable electrical receptacle configured to electrically connect to an electrical connector of an active cable that communicates over much of its length using optics, the active cable electrical receptacle being in electrical communication with the optical transceiver electrical connector;

a signal mapping component coupled between the optical transceiver electrical connector and the active cable electrical receptacle to map a plurality of electrical signals communicated between the optical transceiver electrical connector and the active cable electrical receptacle, the electrical signals including a power signal to power active circuitry in the active cable;

a printed circuit board that is electrically connected to the active cable electrical receptacle by way of the signal mapping component, and the optical transceiver electrical connector comprising an edge connector of the printed circuit board; and

a power conditioner configured to condition the power signal for use by the active circuitry in the active cable.
