Abstract

A prosthesis is disclosed for placement at an Os opening from a main body lumen to a branch body lumen. The prosthesis comprises a radially expansible support at one end, a circumferentially extending link at the other end and at least one frond extending axially therebetween. The support is configured to be deployed in the branch body lumen, with the circumferentially extending link in the main lumen and the frond extendable across the Os.

Claims

1. A method for treating a bifurcation between a main lumen and a branch lumen, comprising the steps of:

providing a radially expandable scaffold, having a proximal end, a distal end, a support structure on the distal end, at least two fronds extending proximally from the proximal end of the support structure and axially between the support structure and a circumferential link attached to the fronds and spaced from the proximal end of the support structure by the fronds, the circumferential link connected to the proximal ends of at least two of the fronds;

transluminally navigating the scaffold to a treatment site; and

deploying the scaffold at the site such that a distal end of the support structure is in the branch lumen and the circumferential link is in the main lumen upstream from the bifurcation.

2. A method as in claim 1, further comprising the step of positioning an inflatable balloon in the main lumen, and deforming the circumferential link such that it conforms to at least a portion of the wall of the main lumen.

3. A method as in claim 2, further comprising the step of deploying a stent in the main lumen.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least two fronds are attached to the proximal end of the support structure.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein after deploying the scaffold, the support structure is completely in the branch lumen.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the circumferential link is connected to the proximal ends of all of the fronds.

7. A method of supporting a vessel wall in the vicinity of an ostium between a main vessel and a branch vessel, comprising the steps of:

positioning first and second fronds across the ostium, each of the fronds having a first end on a first, branch vessel side of the ostium and a second end on a second, main vessel side of the ostium, the second end of each of the fronds being coupled with a structure that extends circumferentially around the main vessel, the fronds defining an elongate opening therebetween through which a second stent can be delivered in the main vessel;

supporting the first ends of the fronds against the vessel wall on the first, branch vessel side of the ostium; and

linking the second ends of the fronds with the circumferentially extending structure on the second, main vessel side of the ostium, such that a circumferential distance is maintained between the second ends of the fronds.

8. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 7, wherein the supporting the first ends step comprises expanding a first expandable support structure against the vessel wall.

9. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 8, wherein the first expandable support structure is attached to the first ends of the fronds.

10. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 8, wherein the expanding step comprises permitting the first expandable support structure to self expand.

11. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 8, wherein the expanding step comprises forcibly expanding the first expandable support structure.

12. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 7, wherein the linking the second ends step comprises positioning the second ends of the fronds, and wherein the method further comprises supporting the second ends by expanding a second expandable support structure against the vessel wall.

13. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 12, wherein the second expandable support structure is attached to the second ends of the fronds.

14. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 12, wherein the expanding step comprises expanding the second support structure such that the second ends of the fronds are entrapped between the second support structure and the vessel wall.

15. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 7, wherein the fronds extend helically about a longitudinal axis.

16. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 7, comprising the step of positioning at least two fronds across the ostium.

17. A method of supporting a vessel wall as in claim 7, comprising the step of positioning at least four fronds across the ostium.
