1. A method for use in a network server system, comprising:

  • the network server system receiving via a global Internet a request to set up a point-to-point document call from an originating network scanner device to a computerized device associated with an intended recipient, wherein the request includes an application layer address associated with the intended recipient;

    the network server system performing a database lookup to determine a current network address at which the computerized device associated with the intended recipient is presently reachable via the global Internet;

    if the database lookup is successful, the network server system sending the current network address to the originating network scanner device so that the originating network scanner device can complete the point-to-point document call to the computerized device associated with the intended recipient via a packet channel across the global Internet, andif the database lookup is not successful, the network server system routing the point-to-point document call to a document mail system, and coupling a digital document via the point-to-point document call into an inbox of the document mail system associated with the intended recipient.
