Abstract

The optoelectronic transceiver includes an optoelectronic transmitter, an optoelectronic receiver, memory, and an interface. The memory is configured to store digital values representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver. The interface is configured to receive from a host a request for data associated with a particular memory address, and respond to the host with a specific digital value of the digital values. The specific digital value is associated with the particular memory address received form the host. The optoelectronic transceiver may further include comparison logic configured to compare the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored as digital values in the memory. The flag values may include: a high temperature warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag, a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag, a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter power warning flag, a low transmitter bias warning flag; a high received optical power warning flag, and a low received optical power warning flag.

Claims

1. An optoelectronic transceiver comprising:

an optoelectronic transmitter;

an optoelectronic receiver;

memory configured to store digital values representative of a plurality of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver;

comparison logic configured to compare respective digital values of said digital values with corresponding limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored in memory; and

an interface configured to;

receive, from a host external to the optoelectronic transceiver, a first request for a first plurality of flag values associated with a particular operating condition, wherein;

the first request includes a first specified memory address;

each respective flag value in the first plurality of flag values is indicative of a comparison between a digital value for the particular operating condition and a different corresponding limit value from a first set of limit values for the particular operating condition; and

the digital value for the particular operating condition comprises one of said digital values; and

respond to the host with the first plurality of flag values associated with the first specified memory address.

2. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the plurality of operating conditions include:

a temperature of said optoelectronic transceiver, an internal supply voltage of said optoelectronic transceiver, a laser bias current of said optoelectronic transmitter, an output power of said optoelectronic transmitter.

3. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transmitter is a laser transmitter and the optoelectronic receiver is a photodiode receiver.

4. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, further comprising:

a laser driver electrically coupled to the optoelectronic transmitter; and

a post amplifier electrically coupled to the optoelectronic receiver.

5. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature alarm flag, a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag, a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag, a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter power alarm flag, a low transmitter power alarm flag;

a high received optical power alarm flag, and a low received optical power alarm flag.

6. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 5, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag, a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag, a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter power warning flag, a low transmitter power warning flag, a high received optical power warning flag, and a low received optical power warning flag.

7. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 5, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature warning flag, a high laser bias current warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, and a low laser bias current warning flag.

8. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter disable input pin.

9. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a rate select input pin.

10. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter fault output pin.

11. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a loss of signal output pin.

12. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, further comprising:

analog to digital conversion circuitry configured to;

receive a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and

convert the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in memory.

13. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the first request includes a request for multiple pairs of flag values, each pair associated with a distinct operating condition.

14. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 13, wherein each pair of flag values includes, for a respective operating condition:

a flag value indicative of a comparison between a respective digital value for the respective operating condition and a low limit value for the respective operating condition; and

a flag value indicative of a comparison between the respective digital value for the respective operating condition and a high limit value for the respective operating condition.

15. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 13, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the first request include at least two pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature alarm flag and a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag and a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag and a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter output power alarm flag and a low transmitter output power alarm flag, and a high received optical power alarm flag and a low received optical power alarm flag.

16. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 13, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the first request include at least three pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature alarm flag and a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag and a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag and a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter output power alarm flag and a low transmitter output power alarm flag, and a high received optical power alarm flag and a low received optical power alarm flag.

17. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein:

the interface is further configured to;

receive, from the host, a second request for a second plurality of flag values associated with the particular operating condition, wherein;

the second request includes a second specified memory address that is different from the first specified memory address; and

each respective flag value in the second plurality of flag values is indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a corresponding limit value from a second set of limit values for the particular operating condition that is different from the first set of limit values; and

respond to the host with the second plurality of flag values associated with the second specified memory address.

18. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 17, wherein the second request includes a request for multiple pairs of flag values, each pair associated with a distinct operating condition.

19. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 18, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the second request include at least two pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature warning flag and a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag and a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag and a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter output power warning flag and a low transmitter output power warning flag, and a high received optical power warning flag and a low received optical power warning flag.

20. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 18, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the second request include at least three pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature warning flag and a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag and a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag and a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter output power warning flag and a low transmitter output power warning flag, and a high received optical power warning flag and a low received optical power warning flag.

21. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 17, wherein:

the first specified memory address is associated with a first flag value indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a first set of limit values for the particular operating condition; and

the second specified memory address is associated with a second flag value indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a second set of limit values for the particular operating condition.

22. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 21, wherein:

the first set of limit values are alarm limit values used to determine whether to shut down at least a respective part of the optoelectronic transceiver; and

the second set of limit values are warning limit values used to determine whether to send a warning to the host without shutting down the respective part of the optoelectronic transceiver.

23. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, further comprising:

fault handling logic coupled to the interface to transmit a computed fault signal, the fault handling logic for logically combining at least one fault signal received from within the optoelectronic transceiver and at least one flag value received from memory to generate the computed fault signal.

24. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, further comprising:

control logic configured to generate control signals to control operation of the optoelectronic transmitter in accordance with one or more values stored in memory.

25. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 24, wherein the control logic comprises circuitry.

26. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 24, further comprising:

control adjustment logic for adjusting a first control signal of the control signals generated by the control logic in accordance with an adjustment value stored in memory.

27. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 26, wherein the control adjustment logic comprises circuitry.

28. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, further comprising:

operation disable logic configured to disable operation of at least part of the optoelectronic transceiver in response to a signal based on a respective flag value of the first plurality of flag values.

29. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 28, wherein the operation disable logic comprises circuitry.

30. A method of monitoring an optoelectronic transceiver that includes an optoelectronic transmitter, an optoelectronic receiver, and memory, the method comprising:

storing in memory digital values representative of a plurality of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver;

comparing respective digital values of said digital values with corresponding limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored in memory;

receiving, from a host external to the optoelectronic transceiver, a first request for a first plurality of flag values associated with a particular operating condition, wherein;

the first request includes a first specified memory address;

each respective flag value in the first plurality of flag values is indicative of a comparison between a digital value for the particular operating condition and a different corresponding limit value from a first set of limit values for the particular operating condition; and

the digital value for the particular operating condition comprises one of said digital values; and

responding to the host with the first plurality of flag values associated with the first specified memory address.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the plurality of operating conditions include:

a temperature of said optoelectronic transceiver, an internal supply voltage of said optoelectronic transceiver, a laser bias current of said optoelectronic transmitter, an output power of said optoelectronic transmitter.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein the optoelectronic transmitter is a laser transmitter and the optoelectronic receiver is a photodiode receiver.

33. The method of claim 30, wherein the optoelectronic transceiver further comprises:

a laser driver electrically coupled to the optoelectronic transmitter; and

a post amplifier electrically coupled to the optoelectronic receiver.

34. The method of claim 30, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature alarm flag, a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag, a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag, a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter power alarm flag, a low transmitter power alarm flag;

a high received optical power alarm flag, and a low received optical power alarm flag.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag, a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag, a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter power warning flag, a low transmitter power warning flag, a high received optical power warning flag, and a low received optical power warning flag.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the flag values include:

a high temperature warning flag, a high laser bias current warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, and a low laser bias current warning flag.

37. The method of claim 30, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter disable input pin.

38. The method of claim 30, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a rate select input pin.

39. The method of claim 30, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter fault output pin.

40. The method of claim 30, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a loss of signal output pin.

41. The method of claim 30, further comprising, prior to the storing:

receiving a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and

converting the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in memory.

42. The method of claim 30, wherein the first request includes a request for multiple pairs of flag values, each pair associated with a distinct operating condition.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein each pair of flag values includes, for a respective operating condition:

a flag value indicative of a comparison between a respective digital value for the respective operating condition and a low limit value for the particular operating condition; and

a flag value indicative of a comparison between the respective digital value for the respective operating condition and a high limit value for the respective operating condition.

44. The method of claim 42, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the first request include at least two pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature alarm flag and a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag and a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag and a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter output power alarm flag and a low transmitter output power alarm flag, and a high received optical power alarm flag and a low received optical power alarm flag.

45. The method of claim 42, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the first request include at least three pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature alarm flag and a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag and a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag and a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter output power alarm flag and a low transmitter output power alarm flag, and a high received optical power alarm flag and a low received optical power alarm flag.

46. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

receiving, from the host, a second request for a second plurality of flag values associated with the particular operating condition, wherein;

the second request includes a second specified memory address that is different from the first specified memory address; and

each respective flag value in the second plurality of flag values is indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a corresponding limit value from a second set of limit values for the particular operating condition that is different from the first set of limit values; and

responding to the host with the second plurality of flag values associated with the second specified memory address.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein the second request includes a request for multiple pairs of flag values, each pair associated with a distinct operating condition.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the second request include at least two pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature warning flag and a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag and a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag and a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter output power warning flag and a low transmitter output power warning flag, and a high received optical power warning flag and a low received optical power warning flag.

49. The method of claim 47, wherein the multiple pairs of flag values for the second request include at least three pairs of flag values selected from the set consisting of:

a high temperature warning flag and a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag and a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag and a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter output power warning flag and a low transmitter output power warning flag, and a high received optical power warning flag and a low received optical power warning flag.

50. The method of claim 46, wherein:

the first specified memory address is associated with a first flag value indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a first set of limit values for the particular operating condition; and

the second specified memory address is associated with a second flag value indicative of a comparison between the digital value for the particular operating condition and a second set of limit values for the particular operating condition.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein:

the first set of limit values are alarm limit values used to determine whether to shut down at least a respective part of the optoelectronic transceiver; and

the second set of limit values are warning limit values used to determine whether to send a warning to the host without shutting down the respective part of the optoelectronic transceiver.

52. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

logically combining at least one fault signal from within the optoelectronic transceiver and at least one flag value from memory to generate a computed fault signal; and

transmitting the computed fault signal to the host.

53. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

generating control signals to control operation of the optoelectronic transmitter in accordance with one or more values stored in memory.

54. The method of claim 53, further comprising:

adjusting a first control signal of the control signals in accordance with an adjustment value stored in memory.

55. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

disabling operation of at least part of the optoelectronic transceiver in response to a signal based on a respective flag value of the first plurality of flag values.
