Abstract

A method of providing an incentive award to a user for visiting a participating web site includes registering a user with the information gathering system which maintains an award point account associated with the user and where award points are specific to the information gathering system, making award points available for purchase to a web site proprietor which operates the participating web site, awarding a predetermined amount of award points by the web site proprietor to the registered user for a visit conforming to a predefined rule to the participating web site, updating the award point account associated with the registered user, and exchanging award points associated with the registered user for a good or a service.

Claims

1. A method, implemented in a computer-based information gathering system, of providing an incentive award to a user for visiting a participating web site, the method comprising:

registering, at the information gathering system, a user with the information gathering system, including generating a database record to store the user'"'"'s profile in a profile server, wherein the information gathering system maintains an award point account associated with the user and wherein award points are specific to the information gathering system and are redeemable for a product or a service;

allocating, at the information gathering system, award points to a web site proprietor in response to a request to purchase award points, wherein the request is transmitted to a central provider operating in the information gathering system, wherein the web site proprietor operates the participating web site, wherein the participating web site is operated independently of the information gathering system;

awarding, at the information gathering system, a selected amount of award points to the registered user for a visit to the participating web site in response to receiving a message from the participating web site, including updating the database record associated with the registered user to allocate the selected amount of award points to the award point account of the registered user, wherein the visit conforms to a business rule; and

in response to receiving a redemption order from the registered user, wherein the redemption order requests a product or a service in exchange for a certain amount of award points;

(i) placing, at the information gathering system, a purchase order corresponding to the redemption order with the web site proprietor, and (ii) automatically deducting, at the information gathering system, the certain amount of award points from the award account.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

associating an award point with a redemption value; and

providing a redemption site for exchanging award points for a product or service according to the redemption value.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein registering a user with the information gathering system further includes soliciting personal information from the user in form of a questionnaire;

the method further comprising providing the solicited personal information to the participating website during the visit of the registered user to the participating web site.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the business rule is defined by the web site proprietor and wherein the business rule is specific to the participating web site.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

receiving the business rule from the web site proprietor; and

storing the business rule in the information gathering system.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the business rule specifies an activity to be completed by the registered user in order for the registered user to receive the selected amount of award points.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the business rule further limits a frequency of awarding the selected amount of award points to the registered user.

8. The method of claim 4, wherein awarding a selected amount of award points further includes:

awarding a first amount of award points in response to the registered user completing a first activity; and

awarding a second amount of award points in response to the registered user completing a second activity, wherein the business rule specifies the first and second activities and the first and second amounts of award points.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the first activity includes completing a first demographic questionnaire and a second activity includes completing a second demographic questionnaire distinct from the first questionnaire.

10. The method of claim 4, wherein awarding the selected amount of award points includes awarding a first amount of award points in response to the registered user visiting the participating web site.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein awarding the selected amount of award points further includes awarding a second amount of award points in addition to the first amount of points in response to the registered user completing a predefined activity while visiting the participating web site.

12. The method of claim 4, wherein making award points available for purchase includes a central provider associated with the information gathering system making award points available for purchase;

and wherein the method further comprises;

awarding a standard amount of award points by the central provider to the registered user for a visit to the participating web site, wherein the visit conforms to a system business rule, wherein the system business rule applies to all participating web sites.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically updating the award point account associated with the registered user includes adding points to the award point account of the registered user by the information gathering system without the user leaving the participating web site.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein allocating award points includes setting a price of each award point higher than the redemption value of the award point.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein awarding a selected amount of award points includes:

communicating information related to the visit from the participating web site to the information gathering system; and

awarding the selected amount at the information gathering system;

wherein updating the award point account associated with the registered user includes updating the award point account at the information gathering system; and

wherein the participating web site and the information gathering system are associated with separate physical hosts.

16. An information gathering system for use on the Internet, the system comprising:

a central provider computer system configured to sell award points to a participating web site operated independently of the information gathering system, the central provider including;

a database storing a plurality of user profiles, wherein each of the plurality of user profiles includes demographic information and a balance of award points associated with a registered user;

a transaction server including;

a first routine for maintaining the balance of award points of each registered user;

a second routine for awarding award points to a registered user for performing a first activity, wherein the participating web site defines the first activity and

wherein the participating site obtains personal information associated with the registered user from the central provider in response to detecting a visit by the registered user; and

a third routine for allocating award points to the participating web site in response to a request to purchase award points received from the participating web site; and

a redemption site for accepting and processing, at the information gathering system, a redemption order that requests an exchange of a good or a service for a predefined amount of award points, wherein the transaction server automatically deducts the predefined amount of award points in response to receiving the redemption order from the registered user, wherein the redemption site is stored as a markup file in a memory coupled to a server.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the central provider further stores:

a web site specific business rule, wherein the web site specific business rule specifies a first number of award points to be allocated to the registered user for performing a first predefined activity, and wherein the web site specific business rule is specified by the participating web site; and

a system wide business rule, wherein the system wide business rule specifies a second number of award points to be allocated to the registered user for performing a second predefined activity, and wherein the web site specific business rule applies to all participating web sites.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the first predefined activity is at least one of visiting the participating web site, answering a plurality of demographic questions specific to the participating web site, or visiting a web page referred by the participating web site.

The system of claim 17, wherein the web site specific business rule further specifies a third number of award points to be allocated to the registered user for performing a third predefined activity, wherein the first predefined activity is a short questionnaire and wherein the third predefined activity is a long questionnaire.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the web site specific business rule limits a frequency of awarding the first number of award points to the registered user for performing the first predefined activity.

21. A method in a computer-based information gathering system of providing an incentive award to a registered user for visiting a participating web site, the method comprising:

registering, at the information gathering system, a plurality of users with the information gathering system, including generating a plurality of database records in a profile server to store respective profiles of the plurality of user, wherein the information gathering system solicits personal information from the plurality of users, wherein the information gathering system maintains a profile for each of the plurality of registered users, the profile storing personal information of the user and an award point balance in an award point account, wherein award points are specific to the information gathering system;

allocating, at the information gathering system, award points to the participating web site, wherein a web site proprietor operates the participating web site independently of the information gathering system, and wherein the web site proprietor purchases the award points from the information gathering system;

automatically providing the personal information related to the user to the participating web site;

awarding, at the information gathering system, a selected amount of award points to the registered user for a visit to the participating web site, including updating plurality of database records associated with the registered user to allocate the selected amount of award points to the award point account of the registered user, wherein the visit conforms to a business rule specified by the web site proprietor; and

in response to receiving a redemption order from the registered user, wherein the redemption order requests a product or a service in exchange for a certain amount of award points;

(i) placing, at the information gathering system, a purchase order corresponding to the redemption order with the web site proprietor, and (ii) automatically deducting, at the information gathering system, the certain amount of award points from the award account.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein allocating the award points to the participating web site includes providing the award points at a price higher than the predefined redemption value.

23. The method of claim 21, further comprising providing a redemption web site to the registered user for exchanging award points for a product or service at a predefined redemption value.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein allocating the award points includes making award points available for purchase over an electronic means in a substantially real time;

and wherein awarding a selected amount of award points to the registered user includes awarding the selected amount of award points over an electronic means in a substantially real time.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein awarding a selected amount of award points to the registered user includes awarding the selected amount of award points without the registered user leaving the participating web site.
