Abstract

A fan array fan section in an air handling system includes a plurality of fan units arranged in a fan array and positioned within an air handling compartment. One preferred embodiment may include an array controller program to operate the plurality of the fan units at peak efficiency. The plurality of fan units may be arranged in a true array configuration, a space pattern array configuration, a checker board array configuration, rows slightly offset configuration, columns slightly offset configuration, or a staggered array configuration.

Claims

1. A fan array fan section in an air-handling system to supply air to a building, comprising:

an air handling compartment having a discharge plenum configured to deliver air to a ventilation system for at least a portion of the building, the air handling compartment including multiple chambers arranged in an array where at least a portion of the chambers are located adjacent to one another in at least one row or column in communication with the discharge plenum;

a fan array of fan units, the fan units having motors and fans, wherein the fan units are positioned in corresponding chambers of the air handling compartment and are arranged adjacent to one another; and

at least a portion of the chambers including sound attenuation layers that extend along at least one of a top, bottom and sides of the corresponding chambers, the sound attenuation layers at least partially surrounding the corresponding fans and motors, at least a portion of the sound attenuation layers being positioned between the chambers adjacent to one another.

2. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein each of the chambers has a front end and a back end, wherein the fan units are oriented such that the fans are located proximate to the front ends of the chambers and the motors extend toward the back ends of the chambers.

3. The fan array fan section of claim 2, wherein the sound attenuation layers extend from the front ends to the back ends of the corresponding chambers.

4. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein each of the fan units is positioned in a corresponding individual one of the chambers.

5. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the sound attenuation layers are located along, and enclose, the top, bottom and sides of the fans and motors in the corresponding chambers.

6. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein a spacing between an outer periphery of the fans in adjacent chambers is between 20% and 60% of a fan wheel diameter.

7. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein a spacing between an outer periphery of the fans in adjacent chambers is between 30% and 60% of a fan wheel diameter.

8. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fans constitute plenum fans.

9. The fan array fan section of claim 1, further comprising a speed controller that includes a variable frequency drive.

10. The fan array fan section of claim 9, wherein the fan array includes a number of fan units sufficient to at least meet a total air handling requirement for at least the portion of the building, and wherein the speed controller is sized to meet a power consumption of the fan array needed to meet the total air handling requirement.

11. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan units direct air into a common area of the discharge plenum where the air combines before exiting the discharge plenum.

12. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fans are coupled to the motors in a direct drive connection.

13. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the number of fan units includes at least six fan units.

14. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan array is arranged in a 2-dimensional pattern.

15. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the wheel diameter of the fans substantially equals or is between 12 inches and 44 inches.

16. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the wheel diameter of the fans substantially equals or is between 12 inches and 25 inches.

17. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan array meets a total air handling requirement of a structure.

18. The fan array fan section of claim 1, further comprises a grid system of grid cells in which the fan units are placed.

19. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan units are positioned adjacent to one another in a common plane, the sound attenuation layers being arranged in at least one of rows and columns, to traverse the common plane.

20. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the sound attenuation layers are provided along each of the top, bottom, and sides of the corresponding chambers.

21. The fan array fan section of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of separate modular units in the air handling compartment, each of the separate modular units having at least one of a top, bottom and sides that are configured to be stacked adjacent to one another in an array having at least one row or column, the modular units each including one of the chambers with a motor and fan mounted therein.

22. The fan array fan section of claim 21, wherein the bottoms and tops of the separate modular units have exteriors that are configured to be stacked on one another in a vertical column of at least three separate modular units.

23. The fan array fan section of claim 21, wherein the sides of the separate modular units have exteriors that are configured to be stacked against one another in a horizontal row of at least three separate modular units.

24. The fan array fan section of claim 21, further comprising interlocking structures for interlocking the separate modular units once stacked into the array.

25. The fan array fan section of claim 21, further comprising inlet cones mounted at the front ends of each of the modular units, the inlet cones located upstream of the fans.

26. The fan array fan section of claim 21, wherein individual modular units can be removed, maintained and replaced.

27. The fan array fan section of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of separate modular units configured to be stacked adjacent to one another in an array having at least one row or column in the air handling compartment, each of the modular units including a top, a bottom, sides, a front end and a back end that define the corresponding chamber, the motors and fans positioned in the chambers such that the fans are located proximate to the front ends of the corresponding chambers and the motors extend toward the back ends of the corresponding chambers.

28. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the sound attenuation layers are oriented such that, as sound waves from the fan units spread outward across the array, the sound waves intersect the sound attenuation layers and are at least partially dissipated.

The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan units are positioned adjacent to one another in a common plane, the sound waves traveling at least along the plane, the sound attenuation layers being arranged in at least one of rows and columns that cross the plane such that the sound waves intersect multiple sound attenuation layers as the sound waves travel along the plane.

30. The fan array fan section of claim 29, wherein the sound attenuation panels are located on opposite sides of first and second vertical columns of the fan units.

The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the sound attenuation layers represent sound attenuation panels held by the air handling compartment, the sound attenuation panels being positioned between adjacent fan units to dissipate sound waves that travel between the fan units outward from rotational axes of the fans.

32. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein sound waves from a first fan unit are dissipated by multiple sound attenuation layers of at least second and third fan units as the sound waves travel through the multiple sound attenuation layers of the at least second and third fan units.

The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fans have fan inlets and fan discharges and each of the fans rotate about a corresponding rotation axis, the fan inlets drawing air inward along the rotation axis, the fan discharges discharging air radially outward from the corresponding rotation axis, the sound attenuation layers being aligned with, and positioned to extend across, at least one of the motors and the fan discharges.

The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan units are stacked in a series of at least three vertical columns or at least three horizontal rows, the sound attenuation layers extending vertically or horizontally and being located between adjacent ones of the vertical columns or horizontal rows.

35. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the fan units are removably mounted to the air handling compartment.

36. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein sound from different fan units exhibit wave patterns that interact to experience wave cancellation.

37. The fan array fan section of claim 1, wherein the sound attenuation layers are configured to attenuate low frequency sound.

38. A method of implementing a fan array in an air handling system to supply air to a building, the method comprising:

providing an air handling compartment configured to deliver air to a ventilation system for at least a portion of the building, the air handling compartment including multiple chambers arranged in an array where at least a portion of the chambers are located adjacent to one another in at least one row or column in communication with the;

obtaining a fan array of at least three fan units positioned in the air handling compartment in communication with the discharge plenum, the fan units having motors and fans, wherein the fan units are positioned in corresponding chambers of the air handling compartment and are arranged adjacent to one another; and

including, in at least a portion of the chambers, sound attenuation layers that extend along at least one of a top, bottom and sides of the corresponding chambers, the sound attenuation layers at least partially surrounding the corresponding fans and motors, at least a portion of the sound attenuation layers being positioned between the chambers adjacent to one another.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein each of the chambers has a front end and a back end, wherein the fan units are oriented such that the fans are located proximate to the front ends of the chambers and the motors extend toward the back ends of the chambers.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the sound attenuation layers extend from the front ends to the back ends of the corresponding chambers.

41. The method of claim 38, wherein each of the fan units is positioned in a corresponding individual one of the chambers.

42. The method of claim 38, wherein the sound attenuation layers are located along, and enclose, the top, bottom and sides of the fans and motors in the corresponding chambers.

43. The method of claim 38, wherein a spacing between an outer periphery of the fans in adjacent chambers is between 20% and 60% of a fan wheel diameter.

44. The method of claim 38, wherein a spacing between an outer periphery of the fans in adjacent chambers is between 30% and 60% of a fan wheel diameter.

45. The method of claim 38, wherein the fans constitute plenum fans.

46. The method of claim 38, further comprising a speed controller that includes a variable frequency drive.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein the fan array includes a number of fan units sufficient to at least meet a total air handling requirement for at least the portion of the building, and wherein the speed controller is sized to meet a power consumption of the fan array needed to meet the total air handling requirement.

48. The method of claim 38, wherein the fan units direct air into a common area of the discharge plenum where the air combines before exiting the discharge plenum.

49. The method of claim 38, further comprising coupling the fans to the motors in a direct drive connection.

50. The method of claim 38, wherein the number of fan units includes at least six fan units.

51. The method of claim 38, wherein the fan array is arranged in a 2-dimensional pattern.

52. The method of claim 38, wherein the wheel diameter of the fans substantially equals or is between 12 inches and 44 inches.

53. The method of claim 38, wherein the wheel diameter of the fans substantially equals or is between 12 inches and 25 inches.

54. The method of claim 38, wherein the fan array meets a total air handling requirement of a structure.

55. The method of claim 38, further comprises a grid system of grid cells in which the fan units are placed.

56. The method of claim 38, wherein the fan units are positioned adjacent to one another in a common plane, the sound attenuation layers being arranged in at least one of rows and columns, to traverse the common plane.

57. The method of claim 38, wherein the sound attenuation layers are provided along each of the top, bottom, and sides of the corresponding chambers.

58. The method of claim 38, further comprising providing a plurality of separate modular units to be positioned in the air handling compartment, each of the separate modular units having at least one of a top, bottom and sides that are configured to be stacked adjacent to one another in an array having at least one row or column, the modular units each including one of the chambers with a motor and fan mounted therein.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the bottoms and tops of the separate modular units have exteriors that are configured to be stacked on one another in a vertical column of at least three separate modular units.

60. The method of claim 58, wherein the sides of the separate modular units have exteriors that are configured to be stacked against one another in a horizontal row of at least three separate modular units.

61. The method of claim 58, further comprising interlocking the separate modular units once stacked into the array.

62. The method of claim 58, further comprising mounting inlet cones at the front ends of each of the modular units, the inlet cones located upstream of the fans.

63. The method of claim 58, further comprising removing, maintaining or replacing at least one of the modular units.

64. The method of claim 38, further comprising providing a plurality of separate modular units configured to be stacked adjacent to one another in an array having at least one row or column in the air handling compartment, each of the modular units including a top, a bottom, sides, a front end and a back end that define the corresponding chamber, the motors and fans positioned in the chambers such that the fans are located proximate to the front ends of the corresponding chambers and the motors extend toward the back ends of the corresponding chambers.

65. The method of claim 38, further comprising orienting the sound attenuation layers such that, as sound waves from the fan units spread outward across the array, the sound waves intersect the sound attenuation layers and are at least partially dissipated.

The method of claim 38, further comprising positioning the fan units adjacent to one another in a common plane, the sound waves traveling at least along the plane, the sound attenuation layers being arranged in at least one of rows and columns that cross the plane such that the sound waves intersect multiple sound attenuation layers as the sound waves travel along the plane.

67. The method of claim 38, wherein the sound attenuation layers represent sound attenuation panels held by the air handling compartment, the sound attenuation panels being positioned between adjacent fan units to dissipate sound waves that travel between the fan units outward from rotational axes of the fans.

68. The method of claim 67, wherein the sound attenuation panels are located on opposite sides of first and second vertical columns of the fan units.

69. The method of claim 38, wherein the fans include fan discharges that are positioned adjacent one another, and at least a portion of the fan discharges are exposed to one another.

70. The method of claim 38, wherein sound waves from a first fan unit are dissipated by multiple sound attenuation layers of at least second and third fan units as the sound waves travel through the multiple sound attenuation layers of the at least second and third fan units.

71. The method of claim 38, wherein the fans have fan inlets and fan discharges and each of the fans rotate about a corresponding rotation axis, the fan inlets drawing air inward along the rotation axis, the fan discharges discharging air radially outward from the corresponding rotation axis, the sound attenuation layers being aligned with, and positioned to extend across, at least one of the motors and the fan discharges.

72. The method of claim 38, further comprising stacking the fan units in a series of at least three vertical columns or at least three horizontal rows, the sound attenuation layers extending vertically or horizontally and being located between adjacent ones of the vertical columns or horizontal rows.

73. The method of claim 38, wherein sound from different fan units exhibit wave patterns that interact to experience wave cancellation.

74. The method of claim 38, wherein the sound attenuation layers are configured to attenuate low frequency sound.
