Abstract

Content is transferred from one computer resource to another computer resource by receiving a user-selected first insertion point for placement of verbatim quoted information within a first UI to a destination electronic document file; receiving a user selection of text content to be transferred from a source UI to the first insertion point; copying the text content to a transfer buffer without requiring a user to return to the first UI; recording source reference data items corresponding to the selected text content without requiring the user to return to the first UI; producing in the destination electronic document file a footnote, endnote, or bibliographical entry comprising the reference data items; and generating a human-readable monitor report containing the source reference data items and an identity indicator of the user, wherein background execution prevents knowledge by the user of the monitor report.

Claims

1. A computer program product for monitoring activities of a person quoting information verbatim in an electronic document file being authored the computer program product comprising:

one or more computer-readable, tangible storage devices;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to receive a user-selected first insertion point or replacement area for placement of verbatim quoted information within a first user interface to a destination electronic document file;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to, subsequent to receiving the first insertion point or replacement area, provide a source user interface to a user-selected source electronic document file upon user command;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to, subsequent to providing the source user interface, receive a user selection of text content to be transferred from the source user interface to the first insertion point or replacement area;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to subsequent to receiving the user selection of content, automatically copy the text content to a transfer buffer without requiring a user to return to the first user interface;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to record one or more source reference data items corresponding to the selected text content simultaneously with or subsequent to automatic copying the text content to the transfer buffer without requiring the user to return to the first user interface;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to produce in the destination electronic document file a footnote, endnote, or bibliographical entry comprising the one or more source reference data items; and

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to automatically generate in background execution a human-readable monitor report containing the one or more source reference data items and an identity indicator of the user, wherein the background execution prevents knowledge by the user of the monitor report.

2. The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 further comprising program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to transmit the monitor report to an online learning administrator.

The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 wherein the program instructions to record the one or more source reference data items comprise program instructions to record one or more source identifiers selected from the group consisting of a file name, a path name, a folder name, a server name, a Uniform Resource Locator, and a network address.

4. The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 wherein the program instructions to record the one or more source reference data items comprise program instructions to record a system time, a system date, or both a system time and date.

5. The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 wherein the program instructions to record the one or more source reference data items comprise program instructions to record an author identifier for the one or more source reference data items.

6. The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 wherein the program instructions to record the one or more source reference data items comprise program instructions to record a publication date for the one or more source reference data items.

The computer program product as set forth in claim 6 further comprising program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to generate one or more reports selected from the group consisting of an electronic mail message, a text file, a binary data file, and a printed report.

8. The computer program product as set forth in claim 1 further comprising program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices, to provide an administrator graphical user interface through which an administrator may view stored monitor reports for one or more students.

The computer program product as set forth in claim 8 wherein the program instructions to provide the administrator graphical user interface further comprise program instructions to provide one or more user interface functions selected from the group consisting of a report sorter, a report filter, and a report search function.

The computer program product as set forth in claim 9 wherein the program instructions to provide the one or more user interface functions comprise program instructions to provide one or more user interface function criteria specifiers selected from the group consisting of a student'"'"'s identification, a class of students, a maximum number of references consulted, a list of allowed references for consultation, and a list of disallowed references for consultation.

11. A system for monitoring activities of a person quoting information verbatim in an electronic document file being authored comprising:

a computing platform having hardware for performing a logical process;

a first user-selected insertion point or replacement area received from a user of the computing platform for placement of verbatim quoted information within a first user interface of the computing platform to a destination electronic document file;

a source user interface of the computing platform to a source electronic document file from which user manipulations of the source electronic document file are received;

one or more computer-readable text elements selected by the user subsequent to definition of the insertion point or replacement area to be transferred from the source user interface to the first insertion point or replacement area;

an automatic copier portion of the computing platform configured to copy the selected text content to a transfer buffer subsequent to selection of the text content, the copier copying the elements without requiring the user to return to the first user interface;

a source reference data item recorder portion computing platform configured to, responsive to the copying by the automatic copier, record one or more source reference data items corresponding to the selected text content;

a reference note generator portion of the computing platform configured to produce in the destination electronic document file a footnote, endnote, or bibliographical entry comprising the one or more source reference data items; and

a monitor report generator portion of the computing platform configured to automatically generate in background execution a human-readable monitor report containing the one or more source reference data items and an indicator of an identity of the user, wherein the background execution prevents knowledge by the user of the monitor report.

12. The system as set forth in claim 11 further comprising a report transmitter portion of the computing platform configured to transmit the monitor report to an online learning administrator.

13. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein the source reference data item recorder is configured to record one or more source identifiers selected from the group consisting of a file name, a path name, a folder name, a server name, a Uniform Resource Locator, and a network address.

14. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein the source reference data item recorder is configured to record a system time, a system date, or both a system time and a system date.

15. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein the source reference data item recorder is configured to record an author identifier for the one or more source reference data items.

16. The system as set forth in claim 11 wherein the source reference data item recorder is configured to record a publication date for the one or more source reference data items.

17. The system as set forth in claim 16 wherein the monitor report generator is further configured to generate one or more reports selected from the group consisting of an electronic mail message, a text file, a binary data file, and a report on a printer.

18. The system as set forth in claim 11 further comprising an administrator graphical user interface through which an administrator may view stored monitor reports for one or more students.

19. The system as set forth in claim 18 wherein the administrator graphical user interface further comprises one or more user interface functions selected from the group consisting of a report sorter, a report filter, and a report search function.

20. The system as set forth in claim 19 wherein the one or more user interface functions comprise one or more user interface function criteria specifiers selected from the group consisting of a student'"'"'s identification, a class of students, a maximum number of references consulted, a list of allowed references for consultation, and a list of disallowed references for consultation.

21. A computer system for monitoring activities of a person quoting information verbatim in an electronic document file being authored comprising:

one or more processors, one or more computer-readable memories and one or more computer-readable, tangible storage devices;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to receive a user-selected first insertion point or replacement area for placement of verbatim quoted information within a first user interface to a destination electronic document file;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to subsequent to receiving the first insertion point or replacement area, provide a source user interface to a user-selected source electronic document file responsive to a user command;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to subsequent to providing the source user interface, receive a user selection of text content to be transferred from the source user interface to the first insertion point or replacement area;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to subsequent to receiving the user selection of the text content, automatically copy the text content to a transfer buffer without requiring a user to return to the first user interface;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to record and record one or more source reference data items corresponding to the selected text content simultaneously with or subsequent to automatic copying the text content to the transfer buffer without requiring the user to return to the first user interface;

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to produce in the destination electronic document file a footnote, endnote, or bibliographical entry comprising the one or more source reference data items; and

program instructions, stored on at least one of the one or more storage devices for execution by at least one of the one or more processors via at least one of the one or more memories, to automatically generate in background execution a human-readable monitor report containing the one or more source reference data items and an identity indicator of the user, wherein the background execution prevents knowledge by the user of the monitor report.
