Abstract

A method for providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient includes receiving geographical position data of the location from a user and using the geographical position data to identify a plurality of regions near or including the location. Each region is associated with a descriptor. The recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with each of the regions is determined and a region is selected based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region. Once the region is selected, the descriptor associated with the selected region is provided to the recipient via the user.

Claims

1. A method of providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient, the method comprising:

receiving geographical position data of a location from a user;

identifying a plurality of regions near or including the location using the geographical position data, wherein each region is associated with a descriptor;

determining a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the regions;

selecting a region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region; and

providing the descriptor associated with the selected region to the recipient via the user,

wherein at least one of the preceding actions is performed on at least one electronic hardware component.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region prior to providing the descriptor to the recipient.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein determining whether the recipient has permission includes analyzing access rules defined by the user for the selected region.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein analyzing the access rules includes:

identifying a permitted class associated with the selected region; and

granting the recipient permission to receive the descriptor when the recipient is a member of the permitted class.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs and analyzing the access rules includes:

identifying a permitted class associated with each region/descriptor pair; and

granting the recipient permission to receive the descriptor of a region/descriptor pair associated with a particular permitted class when the recipient is a member of the particular permitted class.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of regions near or including the location has an origin or size different from each of the other plurality of regions and wherein identifying the plurality of regions includes accessing a data store storing region information specified by the user.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein identifying the plurality of regions further includes accessing another data store that stores general region information managed by or for an entity other than the user.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein identifying the plurality of regions further includes retrieving user specified region information associated with a region that is within a predetermined distance from the location.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein identifying the plurality of regions further includes retrieving user specified region information associated with a region that includes the location and has an area that is less than a predetermined area.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein determining the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region includes determining a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the region.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein determining the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region includes counting a number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region, wherein the descriptor is directly associated with the region or is associated with another region within the region, and wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs for the selected region, and the method further includes:

determining a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the plurality of region/descriptor pairs by counting a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the selected region using the descriptor associated with the region/descriptor pair; and

selecting a descriptor of the plurality of descriptors for the selected region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for the region, wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for selected region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the descriptor/region pair.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising calculating for each region a region weight based on the region'"'"'s proximity to the location and wherein selecting the region further includes considering the region weight and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein selecting the region further includes considering the user'"'"'s propensity to select descriptors based on the region, the region weight, and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

associating each descriptor for a region with an action; and

comparing the action with an expected action of at least one of the user and the recipient at the location,

wherein selecting the region is further based on a correlation between at least one of the user'"'"'s and the recipient'"'"'s expected actions at the location and the action associated with the descriptor for the selected region.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the location of a mobile communication device using a position locator system and determining the geographical position data of the location at which a user of the mobile communication device is presently located.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing the geographical position data of the location without regard to a current location of the user.

18. A system for providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient, the system comprising system components including:

a data store for storing region information correlated with geographical position data, wherein the region information includes a user-specified descriptor associated with each of a plurality of regions, and for storing recipient data relating to the region information; and

a descriptor sharing module coupled to the data store, the descriptor sharing module configured to receive a request from a user to provide a descriptor for a location, wherein the request includes geographical position data of the location, to use the geographical position data of the location to identify a plurality of regions near or including the location based on the region information, to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each identified region based on the recipient data, to select a region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region, and to provide the descriptor associated with the selected region to the recipient via the user,

wherein at least one of the system components includes at least one electronic hardware component.

19. The system of claim 18 further comprising:

an electronic communication device associated with the user; and

a position locator system configured to determine the geographical position data of the location of the electronic communication device,

wherein the electronic communication device is configured to transmit the geographical position data to the description sharing module.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the electronic communication device includes a user interface for allowing the user of the device to provide the geographical position data of the location without regard to a current location of the device.

The system of claim 18 wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each of the plurality of regions and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

The system of claim 18 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs and wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each region/descriptor pair, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

23. The system of claim 18, wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the region.

The system of claim 18 wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region, wherein the descriptor is directly associated with the region or is associated with another region within the region, and wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region.

The system of claim 18 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the plurality of region/descriptor pairs by counting a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the selected region using the descriptor associated with the region/descriptor pair, and to select a descriptor of the plurality of descriptors for the selected region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for the region, wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for selected region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the descriptor/region pair.

26. The system of claim 18 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to calculate for each identified region a region weight based on the region'"'"'s proximity to the location, and to select a region based on the region weight and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

27. The system of claim 26 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to select a region based on the user'"'"'s propensity to select descriptors based on the region, the region weight, and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

28. The system of claim 18 wherein a descriptor for a region is further associated with an action and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to compare the action associated with the descriptor with an expected action of at least one of the user and the recipient at the location and to select a region based on a correlation between at least one of the user'"'"'s and the recipient'"'"'s expected actions at the location and the action associated with the descriptor for the selected region.

29. The system of claim 18 further comprising another data store for storing general region information correlated with the geographical position data, wherein the general region information is managed by or for an entity other than the user and includes a general descriptor associated with a plurality of regions.

30. An electronic communication device associated with a user for providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient, the device comprising:

a communication interface coupled to a network;

a data store for storing region information correlated with geographical position data, wherein the region information includes a user-specified descriptor associated with each of a plurality of regions, and for storing recipient data relating to the region information; and

a descriptor sharing module configured to receive geographical position data of a location, to identify a plurality of regions near or including the location based on the region information, to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each identified region based on the recipient data, to select a region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region, and to provide the descriptor associated with the selected region to the recipient over the network via the communication interface.

31. The device of claim 30 wherein the device is a mobile communication device that comprises a position locator system configured to determine the geographical position data of the electronic communication device and to transmit the geographical position data to the description sharing module.

32. The device of claim 30 further comprising a user interface for allowing a user of the device to provide the geographical position data of the location without regard to a current location of the device.

The device of claim 30 wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each of the plurality of regions and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

The device of claim 30 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs and wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each region/descriptor pair, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

35. The device of claim 30 wherein each of the plurality of regions near or including the location has an origin or size different from each of the other plurality of regions.

36. The device of claim 35 wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to identify a region that is within a predetermined distance from the location and to identify a region that includes the location and has an area that is less than a predetermined area.

37. The device of claim 30, wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the region.

38. The device of claim 30 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region, wherein the descriptor is directly associated with the region or is associated with another region within the region, and wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region.

39. The device of claim 30 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the plurality of region/descriptor pairs by counting a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the selected region using the descriptor associated with the region/descriptor pair, and to select a descriptor of the plurality of descriptors for the selected region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for the region, wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for selected region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the descriptor/region pair.

40. The device of claim 30 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to calculate for each region a region weight based on the region'"'"'s proximity to the location, and to select a region based on the region weight and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

41. The device of claim 40 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to select a region based on the user'"'"'s propensity to select descriptors based on the region, the region weight, and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

42. The device of claim 30 wherein a descriptor for a region is further associated with an action and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to compare the action associated with the descriptor with an expected action of at least one of the user and the recipient at the location and to select a region based on a correlation between at least one of the user'"'"'s and the recipient'"'"'s expected actions at the location and the action associated with the descriptor for the selected region.

43. The device of claim 30 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to access an external data store that stores general region information associated with a plurality of regions, and to use the geographical position data to retrieve general region information relating to the location.

44. A server for providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient, the server comprising:

a communication interface for communicating with an electronic communication device associated with a user over a network and with a data store for storing region information correlated with geographical position data, wherein the region information includes a user-specified descriptor associated with each of a plurality of regions, and for storing recipient data relating to the region information; and

a descriptor sharing module configured to receive geographical position data of a location and a recipient identifier from the electronic communication device, to identify a plurality of regions near or including the location based on the region information, to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each identified region based on the recipient data, to select a region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region, and to provide the descriptor associated with the selected region to the mobile communication device over the network via the communication interface,

wherein at least one of the server components includes at least one electronic hardware component.

45. The server of claim 44 wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each of the plurality of regions and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

46. The server of claim 44 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs and wherein the region information includes user-defined access rules associated with each region/descriptor pair, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region based on the access rules.

47. The server of claim 44 wherein each of the plurality of regions near or including the location has an origin or size different from each of the other plurality of regions.

48. The server of claim 47 wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to identify a region that is within a predetermined distance from the location and to identify a region that includes the location and has an area that is less than a predetermined area.

49. The server of claim 44, wherein the descriptor sharing module is configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the region.

50. The server of claim 44 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to determine the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region by determining a number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with a region, wherein the descriptor is directly associated with the region or is associated with another region within the region, and wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region.

51. The server of claim 44 wherein the selected region is associated with a plurality of descriptors forming a plurality of region/descriptor pairs, and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to determine a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the plurality of region/descriptor pairs by counting a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the selected region using the descriptor associated with the region/descriptor pair, and to select a descriptor of the plurality of descriptors for the selected region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for the region, wherein the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected descriptor for selected region is proportional to the number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the descriptor/region pair.

52. The server of claim 44 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to calculate for each region a region weight based on the region'"'"'s proximity to the location, and to select a region based on the region weight and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

53. The server of claim 52 wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to select a region based on the user'"'"'s propensity to select descriptors based on the region, the region weight, and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.

54. The server of claim 44 wherein a descriptor for a region is further associated with an action and wherein the descriptor sharing module is further configured to compare the action associated with the descriptor with an expected action of at least one of the user and the recipient at the location and to select a region based on a correlation between at least one of the user'"'"'s and the recipient'"'"'s expected actions at the location and the action associated with the descriptor for the selected region.

55. The server of claim 44 further comprising another data store for storing general region information associated with a plurality of regions, and to use the geographical position data to retrieve general region information relating to the location.

56. The server of claim 44, wherein the data store for storing region information and recipient data relating to the region information is included in the server.

57. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing programming instructions for providing a descriptor of a location to a recipient, the program instructions for performing a method comprising:

receiving geographical position data of a location from a user;

identifying a plurality of regions near or including the location using the geographical position data, wherein each region is associated with a descriptor;

determining, for each region, a level of familiarity of the recipient with each of the regions;

selecting a region based on the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with the selected region; and

providing the descriptor associated with the selected region to the recipient via the user.

58. The computer readable medium of claim 57 further comprising instructions for determining whether the recipient has permission to receive the descriptor associated with the selected region by analyzing access rules defined by the user for the recipient.

59. The computer readable medium of claim 57 wherein the instructions for determining the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region include instructions for determining a number of times the recipient has acted or interacted in relation to the region.

60. The computer readable medium of claim 57 wherein the instructions for determining the recipient'"'"'s level of familiarity with a region include instructions for determining a number of times the user has shared with or received from the recipient the descriptor associated with the region, wherein the descriptor is directly associated with the region or is associated with another region within the region.

61. The computer readable medium of claim 57 further comprising instructions for calculating for each region a region weight based on the region'"'"'s proximity to the location and wherein the instructions for selecting the region include instructions for considering the region weight and the recipient'"'"'s familiarity with the region.
