Voice interface and search for electronic devices including bluetooth headsets and remote systems
First Claim
1. An electronic device comprising:
- a microphone;
a speaker;
a voice user interface for interacting with a user using speech recognition and speech synthesis; and
a transceiver for communicating with one or more remote devices using a Bluetooth protocol,wherein the electronic device is a Bluetooth headset, wherein the electronic device is configured to allow a user to interact with the electronic device primarily through the voice-user interface, andwherein at least a first portion of speech recognition or speech synthesis is performed by the electronic device, and wherein at least a second portion of speech recognition or speech synthesis is performed by a remote server,wherein the electronic device comprises a speech recognizer, and wherein the speech recognizer is configured with a recognition set comprising one or more commands, and wherein a first portion of input speech received from the user is recognized as a command, and wherein the command and a second portion of the input speech are sent from the Bluetooth headset to a first remote device for processing, the first remote device comprising a cellular phone, andwherein the recognized command is executed on the cellular phone, and wherein the cellular phone establishes a communication channel to the remote server and sends the second portion of the input speech to the remote server, and the second portion of the input speech is recognized on the remote server.

Abstract
Systems and methods for improving the interaction between a user and a small electronic device such as a Bluetooth headset are described. The use of a voice user interface in electronic devices may be used. In one embodiment, recognition processing limitations of some devices are overcome by employing speech synthesizers and recognizers in series where one electronic device responds to simple audio commands and sends audio requests to a remote device with more significant recognition analysis capability. Embodiments of the present invention may include systems and methods for utilizing speech recognizers and synthesizers in series to provide simple, reliable, and hands-free interfaces with users.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the second portion of input speech comprises parameters for a voice search, and wherein the remote server:
-
recognizes the voice search parameters; performs a search based on the recognized voice search parameters and generates search results; generates synthesized speech based on at least a portion of the search results; and sends the synthesized speech to said electronic device for presentation to the user.
-
-
3. The device of claim 1 wherein a first set of utterances received from a user are recognized by the speech recognizer locally on the electronic device, and in accordance with locally recognized speech, the synthesizer outputs synthesized speech, and a second set of utterances are recognized by the remote server.
-
4. The device of claim 1 wherein the electronic device has no keyboard.
-
5. The device of claim 1 wherein the electronic device has no display.
-
6. The device of claim 1 wherein the electronic device is configured to recognize a plurality of words corresponding to different language selections, and wherein a first recognition result indicating that a first language selection was recognized is used to access a first remote server configured to process speech in a first language, and wherein a second recognition result indicating that a second language selection was recognized is used to access a second remote server configured to process speech in a second language.
-
7. The device of claim 1 wherein the electronic device has a width of less than about 3 inches and a length of less than about 3 inches.
-
8. A method comprising:
-
receiving input speech from a user in an electronic device, wherein the electronic device is a Bluetooth headset comprising a speech recognizer, and wherein the speech recognizer is configured with a recognition set comprising one or more commands; recognizing a first portion of the input speech on the electronic device, and outputting a command of said one or more commands if the first portion of input speech is recognized; sending the command and a second portion of the input speech to a cellular phone using a Bluetooth protocol; and executing the command on the cellular phone, and in accordance therewith, establishing a communication channel to a remote server and performing recognition on a second portion of the input speech on the remote server.
-
-
9. The method of claim 8 wherein the second portion of input speech comprises parameters for a voice search, and the method further comprising:
on the remote server, recognizing the voice search parameters; performing a search based on the recognized voice search parameters and generating search results; generating synthesized speech based on at least a portion of the search results; and sending the synthesized speech to said electronic device for presentation to the user.
-
10. The method of claim 8 wherein the electronic device further comprises a speech synthesizer, and wherein a first set of utterances received from the user are recognized by the speech recognizer locally on the electronic device, and in accordance with locally recognized speech, the speech synthesizer outputs synthesized speech, and a second set of utterances are automatically sent to the remote server and recognized by the remote server.
