1. A method of accelerating the healing of a wound of the skin of a subject, comprising:
- identifying a subject having a wound of the skin; and
providing adipose tissue to a self contained adipose-derived stem cell processing unit comprising;
a tissue collecting container configured to receive and fully or partially disaggregate adipose tissue, wherein said tissue collecting container is coupled to a cell collection container wherein said coupling defines a closed system in which said fully or partially disaggregated adipose tissue directed from tissue collecting container to cell collection container is not exposed to the external environment; and
wherein said cell collection container, further comprises a cell concentrator that facilitates separation of the cells in a suspension; and
an outlet that is structured to permit said concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived cells to be removed from said stem cell processing unit;
obtaining a concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells from said self contained adipose-derived stem cell processing unit; and
providing said concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells to said subject in an amount sufficient to accelerate the healing of said wound.

Abstract
Cells present in adipose tissue are used to promote wound healing in a patient. Methods of treating patients include processing adipose tissue to deliver a concentrated amount of regenerative cells obtained from the adipose tissue to a patient. The methods may be practiced in a closed system so that the regenerative cells are not exposed to an external environment prior to being administered to a patient. Accordingly, in a preferred method, cells present in adipose tissue are placed directly into a recipient along with such additives necessary to promote, engender or support a therapeutic benefit.

8. A method of accelerating the healing of a wound of the skin of a subject, comprising:
-
identifying a subject having a wound of the skin; and providing adipose tissue to a self contained adipose-derived stem cell processing unit comprising; a tissue collection chamber that is configured to receive a first portion of unprocessed adipose tissue from said subject while maintaining a closed system, wherein said tissue collection chamber comprises an aspiration port structured to be coupled to a suction device; a first filter that is disposed within said tissue collection chamber, wherein said first filter is configured to retain a first component of said unprocessed adipose tissue and pass a second component of said unprocessed adipose tissue, such that said first filter substantially separates said first component from said second component, and wherein said first component comprises a cell population that comprises adipose-derived stem cells and said second component comprises lipid, blood, mature adipocytes and saline; a processing chamber that is joined to said tissue collection chamber by a conduit such that a closed system is maintained, wherein said processing chamber comprises a second filter, a centrifuge, or a spinning membrane filter; a programmable processing device capable of communication with said tissue collection chamber and said processing chamber, wherein said processing device operates at least one pump configured to use pressure to control ingress and egress of tissues through said automated adipose-derived stem cell processing unit; and an outlet wherein said outlet is configured to allow the aseptic removal of a concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells obtained from said processing chamber; obtaining a concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells from said self contained adipose-derived stem cell processing unit; and providing said concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells to said subject in an amount sufficient to accelerate the healing of said wound. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 32, 33)
