Abstract

A composite display is disclosed. A first paddle has a first plurality of pixel elements wherein the first paddle is arranged to sweep out a first area during a first paddle cycle. A second paddle has a second plurality of pixel elements wherein the second paddle is arranged to sweep out a second area during a second paddle cycle and wherein the first and second areas include first and second nonoverlapping portions. A first pixel element on the first paddle is configured to be activated when the first pixel element coincides with a first image pixel. A second pixel element on the second paddle is configured to be activated when the second pixel element coincides with a second image pixel. An image corresponding to the first and second image pixels is represented on the composite display by activating the first and second pixel elements.

Claims

1. A composite display including:

a first paddle having a first plurality of pixel elements wherein the first paddle is arranged to rotate around a first axis and sweep out a first area during a first paddle cycle;

a second paddle having a second plurality of pixel elements wherein the second paddle is arranged to rotate around a second axis and sweep out a second area during a second paddle cycle, wherein the first axis is substantially parallel to the second axis and substantially perpendicular to a composite display area, and wherein the first and second areas include an overlapping portion and first and second non-overlapping portions;

a first pixel element on the first paddle configured to be activated when the first pixel element coincides with a first image pixel; and

a second pixel element on the second paddle configured to be activated when the second pixel element coincides with a second image pixel;

wherein an image corresponding to the first and second image pixels is represented in the composite display area by activating the first and second pixel elements.

2. The display of claim 1, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the first non-overlapping portion in the first area.

3. The display of claim 1, wherein the overlapping portion of the first and second areas overlaps in an x-y projection.

4. The display of claim 3, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the overlapping portion in the first area.

5. The display of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first pixel element and the second pixel element is a light emitting diode (LED).

6. The display of claim 1, wherein activating includes activating the first pixel element over a specified duty cycle.

7. The display of claim 1, wherein the first image pixel is mapped to a first temporal pixel associated with the first pixel element, such that the first pixel element coincides with the first image pixel.

8. The display of claim 7, wherein the first temporal pixel includes a first pixel element on the first paddle and a first time in a first paddle cycle.

9. The display of claim 7, wherein the first temporal pixel includes a first pixel element on the first paddle and a first angle in a first paddle cycle.

10. The display of claim 7, wherein the first temporal pixel is mapped to an intensity value.

11. The display of claim 1, wherein the first image pixel is mapped to a first temporal pixel and a second temporal pixel.

12. The display of claim 1, wherein the first image pixel is mapped to a first temporal pixel and a second temporal pixel wherein a pixel element associated with the first temporal pixel is sometimes activated and a pixel element associated with the second temporal pixel is sometimes activated.

13. The display of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second paddles is configured to rotate about an axis of rotation.

14. The display of claim 1, wherein the first and second paddles are each configured sweep in phase with each other.

15. The display of claim 1, wherein the first and second paddles are each configured to sweep out of phase with each other.

16. The display of claim 1, wherein the first and second paddles are arranged to sweep in different sweep planes.

17. The display of claim 1, wherein the first and the second paddles have different sizes.

18. The display of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second paddles is configured to start from rest by ramping up from an initial speed to a final speed.

19. The display of claim 1, wherein control data for at least one of the first and second pixel elements is provided according to a clock.

20. The display of claim 1, wherein the first and second pixel elements are activated based on data received via at least one optical fiber.

21. The display of claim 1, wherein the first image pixel is mapped to a first temporal pixel that is closest to the first image pixel.

22. The display of claim 1, wherein the overlapping portion of the first and second areas overlaps in an x-y projection and wherein a mask is configured to occlude the overlapping portion.

23. The display of claim 1, wherein the overlapping portion of the first and second areas overlaps in an x-y projection and wherein at least one of the first and second paddles is shaped such that it occludes the overlapping portion.

24. The composite display of claim 1, further comprising a control module for activating pixel elements relatively less frequently when the pixel elements are in the overlapping portion and relatively more frequently when the pixel elements are in the first non-overlapping portion or the second non-overlapping portion.

25. A method, comprising:

rotating a first paddle having a first plurality of pixel elements around a first axis to sweep out a first area during a first paddle cycle;

rotating a second paddle having a second plurality of pixel elements around a second axis to sweep out a second area during a second paddle cycle, wherein the first axis is substantially parallel to the second axis and substantially perpendicular to a composite display area, and wherein the first and second areas include an overlapping portion and first and second non-overlapping portions;

activating a first pixel element on the first paddle when the first pixel element coincides with a first image pixel; and

activating a second pixel element on the second paddle when the second pixel element coincides with a second image pixel;

wherein an image corresponding to the first and second image pixels is represented in the composite display by activating the first and second pixel elements.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the first non-overlapping portion in the first area.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the overlapping portion in the first area.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the first image pixel is mapped to a first temporal pixel associated with the first pixel element, such that the first pixel element coincides with the first image pixel.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the first temporal pixel includes a first pixel element on the first paddle and a first time in a first paddle cycle.

30. The method of claim 25, further comprising activating pixel elements relatively less frequently when the pixel elements are in the overlapping portion and relatively more frequently when the pixel elements are in the first non-overlapping portion or the second non-overlapping portion.

31. An apparatus, comprising:

means for rotating a first paddle having a first plurality of pixel elements around a first axis to sweep out a first area during a first paddle cycle;

means for rotating a second paddle having a second plurality of pixel elements around a second axis to sweep out a second area during a second paddle cycle, wherein the first axis is substantially parallel to the second axis and substantially perpendicular to a composite display area, and wherein the first and second areas include an overlapping portion and first and second non-overlapping portions; and

control means for representing an image corresponding to the first and second image pixels in the composite display by activating a first pixel element on the first paddle when the first pixel element coincides with a first image pixel and activating a second pixel element on the second paddle when the second pixel element coincides with a second image pixel.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the first non-overlapping portion in the first area.

33. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the first image pixel corresponds to the overlapping portion in the first area.

34. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the control means is further configured to map a first image pixel to a first temporal pixel associated with the first pixel element, such that the first pixel element coincides with the first image pixel.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the first temporal pixel includes a first pixel element on the first paddle and a first time in a first paddle cycle.

36. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the control means is configured for activating pixel elements relatively less frequently when the pixel elements are in the overlapping portion and relatively more frequently when the pixel elements are in the first non-overlapping portion or the second non-overlapping portion.
