providing a sensor with a plurality of light emitting elements and a light detector; incorporating a memory device with the sensor, wherein the memory device stores code that enables an oximeter monitor to determine which of the plurality of light emitting elements to use to emit the light; and storing correlations between properties of each of the plurality of light emitting elements and capabilities of the oximeter sensor in the memory device to facilitate determining which of the plurality of light emitting elements to use to emit the light.

an oximeter sensor, comprising; a plurality of light emitting elements configured to emit light; a light detector configured to receive the light; and a memory device configured to store code, wherein code stored by the memory device relates to which of the plurality of light emitting elements to use to emit the light and wherein the code stored by the memory device comprises correlations between properties of each of the plurality of light emitting elements and capabilities of the oximeter sensor; and an oximeter monitor, comprising; a receiving circuit configured to receive the code from the oximeter sensor and to determine which of the plurality of light emitting elements to use to emit the light based on the code; and a drive circuit configured to provide signals to circuitry of the oximeter sensor specifying a particular light emitting element of the plurality of light emitting elements to provide power to based on the code.

5. A method of monitor operation, comprising:

receiving, at an oximeter monitor, information from a memory device of an oximeter sensor, the information including code causing the oximeter monitor to determine which of a plurality of light emitting elements of the oximeter sensor to use to emit light, wherein the code comprises correlations between properties of each of the plurality of light emitting elements and capabilities of the oximeter sensor; and providing power from the oximeter monitor to a particular light emitting element of the plurality of light emitting elements through a drive circuit based on the code received from the oximeter sensor. - View Dependent Claims (6)

7. A method of operating an oximeter sensor, comprising:

retaining code in a memory device of the oximeter sensor, wherein the code enables an oximeter monitor to determine which of a plurality of light emitting elements of the oximeter sensor to use to emit light, and wherein the code comprises correlations between properties of each of the plurality of light emitting elements and capabilities of the oximeter sensor; projecting light from at least one designated light emitting element of the plurality light emitting elements responsive to drive signals from the oximeter monitor based on the code; and receiving the light with a light detector.

an oximeter sensor configured to communicate with an oximeter monitor, wherein the oximeter sensor comprises; a plurality of light emitting elements configured to emit light; a light detector configured to detect the light; and a memory device configured to store code, wherein code stored by the memory device relates to which of the plurality of light emitting elements should be activated based on a correlation stored by the memory device, wherein the correlation is between wavelengths of each of the plurality of light emitting elements and a range of blood oxygen saturation; and the oximeter monitor, comprising; a receiving circuit configured to receive the code from the oximeter sensor and to determine which of the plurality of light emitting elements should be activated based on the code; and a drive circuit configured to provide signals to circuitry of the oximeter sensor specifying a particular light emitting element of the plurality of light emitting elements to activate based on the code. - View Dependent Claims (9)
