1. A method of converting color image data to a format usable by a wide gamut color display capable of reproducing images out of a gamut described by color display standards, the method comprising:

  • receiving an input signal, in a three-dimensional color space, representing three-dimensional color image pixel data including out-of-range pixel data, said out-of-range pixel data being outside a color gamut reproducible by a three-primary additive display compliant with a color display standard;

    converting said three-dimensional color space input data into wide color gamut image pixel data comprising display data for each of the primary colors of the wide color gamut display, at least a portion of which corresponds to at least some of said out-of-range pixel data; and

    based on said wide color gamut image pixel data, generating a wide color gamut input signal suitable for driving said wide gamut color display.
