Abstract

An exemplary embodiment of the present invention described and shown in the specification and drawings is a transceiver with a receiver, a transmitter, a local oscillator (LO) generator, a controller, and a self-testing unit. All of these components can be packaged for integration into a single IC including components such as filters and inductors. The controller for adaptive programming and calibration of the receiver, transmitter and LO generator. The self-testing unit generates is used to determine the gain, frequency characteristics, selectivity, noise floor, and distortion behavior of the receiver, transmitter and LO generator. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract which will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or the meaning of the claims.

Claims

1. One or more circuits in an integrated circuit, comprising:

a first oscillator;

a tunable oscillator that comprises a tuning input;

a mixer that comprises a first input, a second input and an output, the first input of the mixer being operatively coupled to the tunable oscillator, the second input of the mixer being operatively coupled to the first oscillator; and

a phase detector that comprises a first input, a second input and an output, the first input of the phase detector being operatively coupled to the mixer, the output of the phase detector being operatively coupled to the tuning input.

2. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, comprising a receiver, wherein at least the receiver, the mixer and the phase detector are integrated on a single integrated circuit chip.

3. The one or more circuits according to claim 2, wherein the receiver comprises one or more polyphase filters.

4. The one or more circuits according to claim 3, wherein the one or more circuits are part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports orthogonal frequency division modulation.

5. The one or more circuits according to claim 4, wherein the wireless communications device supports wireless local area network communications.

6. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports spread spectrum modulation and supports wireless communications.

7. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit employs complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology.

8. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports communications over a wireless local area network.

9. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports orthogonal frequency division modulation.

10. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports frequency hopping.

11. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports Bluetooth communications.

12. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit supports one or more of the following:

phase shift keying, quadrature phase shift keying, and offset quadrature phase shift keying.

13. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the tunable oscillator comprises a voltage controlled oscillator.

14. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, comprising:

a charge pump operatively coupled between the output of the phase detector and the tuning input.

15. The one or more circuits according to claim 14, comprising:

a loop filter operatively coupled between the output of the phase detector and the tuning input.

16. The one or more circuits according to claim 15, comprising:

a bandpass filter operatively coupled between the output of the mixer and the first input of the phase detector.

17. The one or more circuits according to claim 16, comprising:

a limiter operatively coupled between the output of the mixer and the first input of the phase detector.

18. The one or more circuits according to claim 17, comprising:

a transmitter amplifier operatively coupled to the tunable oscillator.

19. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the mixer comprises a subsampling mixer.

20. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the mixer comprises a track-and-hold circuitry.

21. The one or more circuits according to claim 20, wherein the track-and-hold circuitry comprises a transistor and a current source;

wherein the transistor has an input node and an output node, the input node being operatively coupled to the first input of the mixer, the output node being operatively coupled to the output of the mixer; and

wherein the current source is operatively coupled to the output of the mixer.

22. The one or more circuits according to claim 20, wherein the mixer comprises a buffer that is operatively coupled to the track-and-hold circuitry.

23. The one or more circuits according to claim 22, wherein the mixer comprises a differential pair amplifier that is operatively coupled to the track-and-hold circuitry.

24. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the mixer comprises a quadrature mixer.

25. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports direct sequence spread spectrum modulation.

26. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports wireless local area network communications and different modes of wireless spread spectrum communications.

27. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports different data rates and different modulation schemes.

28. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports wireless local area network communications and Bluetooth communications.

29. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports different data rates.

30. The one or more circuits according to claim 1, wherein the integrated circuit is part of a wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device supports one or more of the following:

Bluetooth communications, personal area network communications, spread spectrum modulation communications, and orthogonal frequency division modulation communications.
