1. A method for analyzing a changing image characteristic using an infrared camera with programmable logic and a display comprising:

  • acquiring a plurality of thermal images of an area of interest representing a time interval during a transient thermal condition experience;

    selecting an object of interest in the plurality of thermal images;

    using the programmable logic to calculate a rate of change characteristic from a group consisting of (a) a first change in a maximum temperature selected within at least a portion of the images, (b) a second change in a minimum temperature selected within at least one of the plurality of thermal images, and (c) a third change in a delta temperature selected within at least one of the plurality of thermal images; and

    reporting on the display a rate of change characteristic to an operator.
