Abstract

Techniques for controlling one or more modular circuits (“satellites”) that are intended for placement in a subject'"'"'s body. The one or more satellites are controlled by sending signals over a bus that includes first and second conduction paths. Also coupled to the bus in system embodiments is a device such as a pacemaker that provides power and includes control circuitry. Each satellite includes satellite circuitry and one or more effectors that interact with the tissue. The satellite circuitry is coupled to the bus, and thus interfaces the controller to the one or more effectors, which may function as actuators, sensors, or both. The effectors may be electrodes that are used to introduce analog electrical signals (e.g., one or more pacing pulses) into the tissue in the local areas where the electrodes are positioned (e.g., heart muscles) or to sense analog signals (e.g., a propagating depolarization signal) within the tissue.

Claims

1. A method for configuring one or more effectors situated within a satellite unit that resides in a subject'"'"'s body, wherein:

the satellite unit includes a number of effectors that interact with the subject'"'"'s body, and satellite circuitry that is coupled to a bus, and the bus includes first and second conduction paths with at least a portion of the second conduction path being defined through the subject'"'"'s body when the satellite unit is located within the subject'"'"'s body, the method comprising;

receiving signals over the bus; and

based on the signals received over the bus,

deriving a relatively stable DC voltage supplying the circuitry,

recovering clock and digital data,

interpreting bit sequences in the digital data to extract configuration information,

using the bit sequences to store configuration information in the satellite unit for the one or more desired effectors associated with the satellite unit, and

controlling connection of at least one of the first and second conduction paths of the bus to at least one effector based on the configuration information such that the connection is altered to vary conduction paths.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second conduction path includes a portion that is not defined through the subject'"'"'s body.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the second conduction path is substantially entirely defined through the subject'"'"'s body.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first conduction path includes a portion that is defined through the subject'"'"'s body.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the satellite unit is one of a plurality of units;

the bit sequences include address information; and

storing configuration information only for cases where the address information matches stored address information.

6. A method for configuring one or more effectors situated within a satellite unit that resides along a carrier located in a subject'"'"'s body, wherein:

the satellite unit includes a number of effectors that interact with the subject'"'"'s body, and satellite circuitry that is coupled to a bus, and

the bus includes first and second conduction paths with at least a portion of the first conduction path being insulated from the subject'"'"'s body when the carrier is located within the subject'"'"'s body,

the method comprising;

receiving signals over the bus; and

based on the signals receive over the bus,

deriving a relatively stable DC voltage supplying the circuitry,

recovering clock and digital data,

interpreting bit sequences in the digital data to extract configuration information, and

at least for cases where the address information matches stored address information, using the bit sequences stored within the satellite unit to configure one or more desired effectors to be controllably connected to at least one of the first or the second conduction paths of the bus to change the current path.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein:

at least some effectors are electrodes;

receiving a number of bit sequences carrying address information involves receiving a number of satellite-address commands and a number of electrode-address commands; and

the method further comprises determining, based on the satellite-address commands and electrode-address commands, whether the satellite unit is selected and how to couple one or more electrodes therein to the first wire and the second wire.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein:

at least some effectors are electrodes;

configuring the electrodes involves receiving a switch command which triggers the coupling of the electrodes.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein:

the receiving voltages include a DC voltage;

the bit sequences are carried in a digital signal which is used to modulate the DC power supply voltage.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the digital data is recovered from an FSK modulated signal.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein subsequent to configuring the effectors, the method further comprises:

receiving a sleep command; and

turning off certain part of the satellite circuitry while the configured effectors remain in their configured states, hence reducing the power consumption by the satellite unit.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein:

at least some effectors are electrodes;

subsequent to configuring the effectors, the method further comprises receiving one or more pacing signals over the two wires, thereby facilitating cardiac pacing through the configured electrodes with improved accuracy.

13. The method of claim 6, wherein subsequent to configuring the effectors, the method further comprises receiving analog signals through the configured effectors, wherein the received analog signals are transmitted over the bus to a signal detection system.
