1. A connector for coupling a cord of a peripheral device with a terminal device, the connector comprising:
- a plug member configured for being coupled with an end of a cord, the plug member including a housing having a generally planar mating surface configured to mate against a connector surface of a housing of the terminal device, the plug member including a plurality of biased contacts that are biased to extend forward of the mating surface;
a stationary engagement claw formed with the housing and positioned proximate one end of the mating surface, the stationary engagement claw having an angled surface configured to connect with an angled surface of an engagement lip on the housing of the terminal device;
the angled surface of the stationary engagement claw being angled approximately 46 degrees with respect to the generally planar mating surface of the plug member;
a pivoting engagement claw positioned proximate another end of the mating surface opposite the stationary engagement claw and having an angled surface, the pivoting engagement claw being coupled to a lever arm and configured to be moved by force on the lever arm for pivoting between a first position to engage a second angled surface proximate the connector surface of the terminal device and a second position to disengage from the second angled surface;
a force element for providing a force on the lever arm in a direction that pivots the pivoting engagement claw toward the first position;
the engagement claws, with the lever pivoted toward the first position, simultaneously engaging the respective complementary angled surfaces and directing the mating surface toward the connector surface to press the biased contacts against the connector surface.

Abstract
A communication system includes a voice-directed portable terminal with a voice user interface that is configured for being able to communicate with a computer system. The communication system includes a peripheral device having a cord coupled with the portable terminal and a connector adapted to disconnect from the portable terminal when a sufficient force is applied to the cord. This disengages the peripheral device from the portable terminal. The ability of the cord to break-away from the portable terminal prevents damage not only to the connector, but also to the cord, peripheral, and terminal.
