1. A composite material comprising:

  • a support member that has a plurality of pores extending therethrough, anda non-self supporting macroporous crosslinked gel that is located in, and fills, the pores of the support member, wherein the macroporous crosslinked gel has macropores of average size between about 10 and about 3000 nm;

    wherein, in the macroporous crosslinked gel is entrapped a stabilising polymer selected from the group consisting of a cellulose derivative, a polyester, a polyamide, a polyacrylate, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), polyhydroxystyrene (poly(4-vinylphenol), aromatic poly(ether sulfone), a partially charged polymer, and a copolymer of neutral and charged monomers.
