1. A luminaire comprising:
- a lamp;
an on-board processor capable of altering a state of said lamp based on programming in said on-board processor; and
a data port configured to receive a set of event messages from a first processor, said event messages being based on information from a first sensor port, said first sensor port being coupled to said lamp;
wherein said on-board processor independently reacts to said event messages and selectively alters said state of said lamp based on said event messages as determined by said programming during a normal mode of operation; and
wherein said on-board processor and said first processor are capable of sending and receiving said event messages as digital signals.

Abstract
Lighting devices are configured to communicate with one another and with external systems. Sensors located at such lighting devices communicate with the external systems and with others of the lighting devices. Lighting is controlled to maintain safety, to drive customer traffic within a retail facility, or to conserve energy. An application programming interface provides a common mechanism for control of various lighting device types.

5. A system comprising:
-
a first device having a first processor, a first sensor port and a first data port, said first sensor port receiving information, said first processor generating an event message based on said information, said first data port being configured to transmit said event message from said first processor; and a second device having a second on-board processor, said second on-board processor being configured to receive said event message and selectively alter a state of said second device based on said event message as determined by programming located in said on-board processor during a normal mode of operation; wherein said first and second devices are each individually one of a luminaire, an HVAC device, or an alarm device; and wherein said first processor and said second on-board processor are capable of sending and receiving said event message as digital signals. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
